Hello,
I am a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in treating patients who have Bell's palsy and other forms of facial paralysis. I saw your question and wanted to reach out. Normally when patients are diagnosed with Bell's palsy they are seen by their primary care physician or in the ER, are prescribed anti-viral and steroid medications, and are told to wait it out. Waiting can be the hardest part, but it's important to give your body a full year to recover on it's own before pursing any type of invasive treatment like surgery. Many people make a full recovery over the course of this year, however I help patients who are left with residual symptoms. Although waiting a full year is very important, you can establish yourself with a facial nerve specialist at any time. It's never too early to have a consultation so that if you end up being left with any lingering symptoms after a year, you have already begun the process. From time to time I recommend that patients begin non-invasive treatment like facial physical therapy sooner, but this is determined on a case by case basis. Patients who are left with residual symptoms after a year may begin to consider surgical treatments, depending on what they are a good candidate for. There are very few physicians world-wide who specialize in treating patients with facial paralysis, so it's important to seek the help of someone like myself who is an expert in the field.
