Hello, thank you for your encouragement. I got Bell's palsy last year 2 days after easter. Initially my left side of face was swollen, numb& left arm and leg weak. It didn't seem as if doctors took it serious. I was told the doctor wouldn't see me anymore here's a referral to ENT, ENt then passed the buck Nuerology. After server facial pain a doctor finally admitted me. 8 months later I had U finally felt comfortable to go outside, while at my son's game I began having a server head/neck ache. By the time I drove home my entire face was swollen,in pain, and paralyzed. After seeing a new Nuerologist, and having this for a year ,Can someone please tell me when it goes away? I just want to be able to kiss my children.

Just a quick note and wondered if you have recovered completely. I have had it for almost 9 months and I am still not recovered -- and wondered if at 9 months when you wrote this that you found it did recover completely - just took longer. Thanks

I too have had Bells Palsy for 16 years. I had the attack when I was almost 9 mos pregnant, due to the pregnancy, I could not complete the steroid treatment given to me for fear of harming my baby. It has gotten better over the years, but my left eye still droops, I still spill drinks when I drink from a glass, so now I drink straight out of a bottle or I use a straw. My left eye do get dry and itchy from time to time, when I talk, I either drool or sprinkle on people. That is the most embarrassing part. I was told my face may never return to normal.

Hello,

I am a facial plastic surgeon who specializes in treating patients who have Bell's palsy and other forms of facial paralysis. I saw your question and wanted to reach out. Normally when patients are diagnosed with Bell's palsy they are seen by their primary care physician or in the ER, are prescribed anti-viral and steroid medications, and are told to wait it out. Waiting can be the hardest part, but it's important to give your body a full year to recover on it's own before pursing any type of invasive treatment like surgery. Many people make a full recovery over the course of this year, however I help patients who are left with residual symptoms. Although waiting a full year is very important, you can establish yourself with a facial nerve specialist at any time. It's never too early to have a consultation so that if you end up being left with any lingering symptoms after a year, you have already begun the process. From time to time I recommend that patients begin non-invasive treatment like facial physical therapy sooner, but this is determined on a case by case basis. Patients who are left with residual symptoms after a year may begin to consider surgical treatments, depending on what they are a good candidate for. There are very few physicians world-wide who specialize in treating patients with facial paralysis, so it's important to seek the help of someone like myself who is an expert in the field.

I was diagnosed with Bell'system Palsy in February of this year went on prednisone and seemed to be doing well -90% recovered. Then in April it started all over again put started our a little worse but I recovered once more. I tried acupuncture and it seemed to work well. Then about 8 weeks ago it hit once agaib. The jaw pain this time was excruciating. Each time I was put on prednisone. I am pretty close to normal in appearance but the last couple of days have had mild jaw pain. I am afraid it's happening again . It's pretty discouraging if it hits me again.

Why are you all so mean? Bell's Palsy is stressful and anxiety producing. I am shocked by all of your harsh responses.

I'm not sure if this will give any of you hope or maybe destroy it. I'm on my second bout w/Bell's Palsy. The first one was about three months before a complete recovery at age 30. Then 20 years later I had a relapse? or got it a second time, not sure which is correct. That was almost 20 years ago and it still has not recovered completely and I do not think it will at this point in time. It has gotten somewhat better but folks still can spot it very easily. My smile is crooked and it makes me look like some sort of maniac. I still have a droopy side (left), my eye waters alot when I eat or drink, finally I can drink out of a glass/bottle w/o spilling. Closing the eye completely is out of the question. I have learned (after 20 yrs.) to roll my eye up so I can get darkness to sleep. For those of you waiting please be patient it will go away in time. I doubt many folks get it the second time and for it to last 15-20 years might not be what you want to hear but it can happen. Be very careful of your eyes they are vulnerable to scratches and will dry out unless taken care of properly. I took steroids in the beginning but when the doc saw it wasn't helping he weaned me off them. Hope this helps someone and just feel lucky if your BP goes away after a period of time. Mine hasn't......................
