Hello! I had shot of depro provera 1 year ago and I gained weigh (60 lbs in one year!) Horrible!!! And I didn’t change my eating habbits or anything. Also doctor told me there are no side effects to depo provera! So, my question now is: how soon do you lose weight after going of depo provera?

I have been irregularly taking depo for 4 years. I had been 115 lbs for years and now I gained a massive amount of 85 lbs. I have dieted during this time but would only temporarily lose weight. My doctor never told me about any side effects and I am upset that my dr. did not say anything as I was gaining weight and having migraines. Now i am very concerned about my bone density especially since my knees hurt and my ankle is not healing well. I only found out about this weight gain when I saw a new doctor while mine is on vacation.  I am getting off this stuff for good and wish i was told more about it during the last four years. I hear that people have been having a hard time losing the weight and I really hope this is not the case for me.
I have been on depro for years..I also gained weight but I just started walking and I am losing weight so exercise...is a good thing the week before my shot is due though it seems like I go through PMS...uggh..and its usually not the same time I usually go through PMS so that means every 3 months..I go through it twice in one month..I was actually checking to see if anyone else goes through the same thing. I am close to menopause age and cant wait for menopause to happen so I can get off the birth control. This has been the best option for me. THe pills made me angry and irritable all the time ...and I did not want the other options..so this was the best for me.
I have stopped Depo. I was on Depo for 5 years. I know Depo like all things is great for some and horrible for others, im my case it was a little of both but none the less not for me. Pros- No periods right from the start, no cramping or any signs of period at all, no need to remember a pill everyday and not expensive as well it worked as I did not become pregnant.Cons- Weight gain (15 lbs in 5 years) and no this was not due to other causes, why do I know this? Easy I had to diet and stick to a 1200 Calorie diet in order to keep any access weight off, I have never ever had a problem or a need to diet/excercise till depo. I fully beleive if I had not dieted my weight gain would doubled if not tripled in that five years. Plus it is a different type of weight gain, focused on my tummy (pouch) and my sides, it is very noticable even though I am only 125 pounds; almost like a swelling/puffy/aching look. Other cons is my sex drive dropped lower than low and as well although others seem to have the adverse affect the depo gave me horrid acne on my face and back that worsened each year. Also one of the worst things was something I do not see posted a lot but bothered me the most, my face changed; yes I know weird as it sounds it just seemed off like too puffy or swollen; it took on a almost sickly appearance like I had a chronic disease that would drain me each and everyday. Simply put it just was not me.Important note: I ended up having several tests done as I was having so many issues. I had one come back with extreme high Iron levels; I went through testing for a genetic disorder only to find out the high levels of iron were from me not having a period for so many years; the iron was being reabsorbed; thus the high levels. I am including this here in case anyone had the same result and was searching for a answer. It is too early yet to know what will happen now that I am off the shot but after some time has past I will return and let everyone know how it went. I will be keeping a journal so that I can keep good track of everything as to hopefully give others some insight. Talk to you again soon :)
I am having all those side effects and its been 2 years since i stopped taking it. Is their any way to get rid of the mood swings, exhaustion, and weight gain. I am so depressed and i have no energy for anything? Do I have to go back on birth control?
i weight between 230-226 now,but i got off the shot in my late teens,i was 17, but i got on it when i was was 11.5 i started taking the pills,but-only the last 7 ure suposse to take at the end of the month so u'll start ur period,i throw the others out, after 3-4 months i started having it again but it wasnt normal,it was rocky,it would change.
Well it has been less than a week from my last post but I have went through major changes already since coming off Depo. In that small amount of time I have lost 9 pounds as well as almost all symptoms that bothered me while on Depo are gone. I am very happy I made the choice to stop taking Depo, it was just not the choice that worked for my body.
My story is I have really servere Endometriosis so my doctor gave the suggestion of taking the Depo shot and my mother when I was age 19 suggested that it would help take care of my endometriosis. I had surgery before then to clear everything up. However as soon as I started taking the depo shot I was weighing about 125 around the time. I could never gain an ounce of weight. I started noticing that over the time my weight gain kept increasing getting more and more, my pants no longer fit, my stomach increased, and my face also was fat. I look at the pictures of me when I was 125 compared to now and I look like the pillsbury dough man. I used to play soccer so I was always naturally fit, however now I try and do cardio at least 5 times a week with school and work its hard fitting the time in. My weight kind of goes away and then it comes back almost immediately. I've been off the shot after 5 injections for almost 2 years now and nothing helps, not eating right or excercise. I'm highly pissed. I can't even look at myself and feel sexy anymore. However now age 21 I weigh 174 and my current height is 5'8 talk about stretch marks. My hair fell out, I was pissed almost all of the time. Still pissed (assuming this weight will never come off) go figure the Depo didn't even work for me I'm now on my 3rd surgery. The funny thing is my doctor tried to get me back on the shot! Are you F**KING crazy!!! I looked at her like she had ten heads. I'm fat as hell, my appetite has went way down. When I was on the shot I wanted to eat everything I seen, didn't even care what it was, if it was edible I was eating it. Is there anyway we can boycott this crap? It should be illegal, doctors all lie saying that it ws my eating habits...LIES LIES LIES. I have to explain to every boyfriend I get why I'm such a fat ass, not only that but after the shot I also found out I couldn't have kids. :-( If I could I would sue whoever made this medicine. But I guess I'm a dumb ass for not reading up on it and making sure that there wasn't any side effects.
I've been on the shot for over two years now. My weight before I started was 115 and I now weigh 160, it SUCKS! I just missed my last scheduled shot and will not be getting another. My hair also falls out constantly and I get severe migranes almost everyday. I also get throbbing pains in random spots in my body and my immune system is terrible, I can't keep away any colds that I come into contact with. I'm starting to get very paraniod about what's been happening to my body after reading everything that I have... I realllllllly hope that I can lose this awful weight and get back to where I used to be. I've also read that people who have stopped getting the shot to try to get pregnant have had major problems and have had to wait up to two years before being able to concieve. This shot is terrible for your body and also does terrible things to your brain. It's really not healthy to stop your bodies natural cycle, no wonder all this stuff happens to us! I regret it so much and hope that doctors can find something to prevent these side effects so that girls in the future don't have to experience it this way! ):
I have NEVER heard of anyone losing weight on Depo Provera. On the contrary, the biggest complaint about this drug is the increase in weight that it causes. Google the use of Depo Provera in treating sex offenders; you'll see that the major side effect is major weight gain.
I HAVE BEEN ON THE SHOT FOR 4 YEARS AND I JUST MISSED MY SHOT BECAUSE I DONT WANNA STAY ON IT AND I LOST 4 POUNDS ALREADY.
in june 2010 i got the depo shot and during the 3 months i had blood clots in my left lung and i would have sharp pain when i breathe and i was 135 i gained at least 15 - 20 lbs so i stopped the shot after my cycle was back to normal and i lose a couple of pounds.... then i met my boyfriend and we was having sex EVERY DAY OF THE WEEK ! and i was being paranoid that i would get pregnant so i went back on the shot the summer of 2011 BIG MISTAKE !  ive been taking it ever since til today march 6 2012 ..why? cause i gained about 50 lbs and i need to get ready for my big trip in jamaica ... now matter what i not im loosing im still gaining . the 1st day i went to the gym i weighed 176 after a week i did another weigh in and i was 185 NEVER THE FUCK AGAIN IM DOING THE DEPO SHOT !!!!! and i dont recommend ANY WOMEN getting that shot choose another alternative !
Do not take depo unless you Read all the side effects.Hi i had only one course of depo(3mnts) and it was the worst time of my life.I had all the side effects-Weight gain,Uncontrolable mood swings, chronic abdominal pain, lower back pain, lack of arousment, sleeplessness and even endured a leg injury-i exercise and because my bones went week and brittle over such short time i ended up with a  stress fracture.I could believe it and neither cld my Dr once i saw him.I started seeing all the side effects within the third wkits been nearly one yr since my shot and i havnt lost any of the weight and am still quit moody. My Dr assured me that this was safe and healthy for a young body, however i wld never have the shot again. You have no controll over what happens and if you cant cope with the side effects you need to were it out, which is so difficult.Im just hoping that soon i can feel like me again. So please do your research first and learn through my bad experience.
It really just depends on your body and how fast your metabolism is, try drinking beetroot juice, green tea, loads of water to flush it out your system, avoiding drinking alcohol as this will slow this process down, ive found i have lost a bit of weight doing this
ive been on it for 7 months starting on my 18th birthday, i was 6 and a half stone and now nearly 8!!! causing me to feel depressed and self concious many people have told me ive put on weight! after reading all of this im going to get off it now as im not impressed with the outcome, what other form of contraception do you think is better? but with no periods and not the pill as i dont think its very reliable ....
i have been using depo for four years till 2010 june.I stopped for 6 months then i went back to it .One year later i have gained more than 40lbs,which has been difficult to shade it off.
