Hey everyone. I don’t know what is going on lately with my dog. He was eating red meat before and I think that this meat was his favorite meat ever. But now, when he eats it he started to choke and it seems to me that he can’t breathe.
I am not sure is this allergy or not. I don't know how to test dog to see if he has meat allergy?
Is this even possible or I need to find some other way for determination? Any information would be really helpful because I am worried.
Tnx

Hey there Carla.
Meat allergy is very common in dog, it seems to me. But there are several ways to determine does your dog have allergy or not.
Of course, you can always do a lot of tests at the vet’s. Some things you can do alone. For example, you can check for skin reactions – skin irritations and itchiness. Those are the most common signs of food allergies. If you see that your dog is scratching all the time that can be a sign.
Also you should look for ear infection, because ear and skin infections are commonly associated with food – based allergic reactions.

Hello. I would not recommend you to do those tests alone, at your home because sometimes it can be very risky. You should know that. The only one who can actually determine what is wrong with your dog and does he have any allergy is your vet. He needs to do some tests, he needs to take blood sample and he will determine within day or two is your dog allergic to certain meat. But you can figure out is your dog allergic to certain meat by some symptoms. If he has some allergic reaction, it is time to react.

Hello everyone.
It is not that hard to determine does your dog have some allergy especially when your dog has meat allergy.
My brother Josh had this problem. When he was feeding his dog with red meat he started to have some rash and his skin was very red. He took him to the vet immediately and he told him that his dog has allergic reaction to meat.
You can notice the symptoms and your vet very easily can confirm you this.
But I have to disagree with one thing – there is no evidence that blood tests are accurate for the diagnosis of the food allergies.

Hey everyone,
It is actually easy to notice an allergy in your dog. The stuff that others told you about works only if your dog eats the meat: you can see the rash and you can see him scratching. But you can also notice it if he doesn't want to eat something that he used to love, like in your case: and if he tries to eat it, he might choke.
The only way to be 100% sure about your dog having an allergy would be to take him to the vet. He will probably do some blood tests and I think that these are pretty much accurate.

Hey Carla,
I believe that the only way to know for sure would be to visit your vet. You do the same thing when you think that you have an allergy: you go to the doctor to do some tests, you never just assume that you are allergic to something.
Because if you try to figure it out on your own, you might easily make a mistake and conclude that your dog is allergic to something that he isn't allergic to, and then you'll deny him this food for the rest of his life with no particular reason. Now that would be bad, wouldn't it? :)

Hi guys,
I'll agree with everyone suggesting that you should take your dog to the vet for testing.
The things that you can notice yourself are if your dog is acting strangely when eating something, seeing rash on his skin, seeing him scratch a lot or seeing him with an ear infection.
Now all of these things can mean that he is allergic to the food that he ate, but they can also mean a lot of other things. That's why you should visit the vet so you can know for sure that he's allergic to something. The signs that I mentioned are used as an alert to take him to the vet for allergy testing.

Hey Carla,
I think, too, that you should take your dog to the vet.
It is true that there are ways to notice an allergy in your dog but you can never be sure about it. It's kind of a big deal if you suppose that your dog is allergic to meat when he's not. Meat is important for your dog's diet so taking it out of his regular diet for supposing that he is allergic to it is not clever.
Just take him to the vet so the vet could take a sample of your dog's blood. It costs little, lasts shortly and you will know what he's allergic to.

Did you know that there is a tick called The Lone Star which can cause your dog to become allergic to red meat? Apparently, it is enough for this tick to bite your dog and that's it, he becomes allergic to red meat. This can easily be your case since your dog suddenly became allergic to red meat.
I believe that the thing that your dog is doing can mean that he is allergic to it. And you can check for the things that others mentioned, see if he has a rash or if he's scratching a lot, or if he has an ear infection.

Hello guys. How are you? I can see that there are so many pet lovers in here :) I am glad. Well, my dog is allergic to meat. I notice this alone. It was very easy to notice because he had this ugly rash mostly on his ears. Those were the first indicators. I took him to the vet and I can’t remember, but I am pretty sure that he did some blood test and this is how he determine that my dog is allergic. Maybe it is boring sentence but let your vet to determine it. That is the best way.
