Periodically I get insomnia, but not too often anymore. When The Paramedic is working overnight, I sleep (to steal from Ashford & Simpson) "solid ... solid as a rock". When he's not working, he wakes me up periodically with his snoring but it's still pretty solid. I try to get 7-9 hours of sleep. Hit the goal 95% of the time.

If I can squeeze the pillow sammich around my head tight enough to restrict my airflow, I can sleep like a rock But, if the satan box is up really loud, it may take a while for the asphyxia to kick in.

I sleep like a rock, when I actually sleep. Usually 4 hours a night, sometimes 5. I don't even bother getting in bed unless I'm on the verge of falling asleep. There have been nights where I don't even get in bed, although not lately.

Every 3-4 months, I'll have a 10 hour night of sleep, and it seems to reset the meter.

My insomnia used to bother me. I finally figured that when I get tired, I'll sleep, and I just needed to put the time to good use. No one's ever died from lack of sleep, have they?

Now ya got me curious. I remember reading Steven King's Insomnia.. I think he based the character's condition on this real thing..
Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI)
Fatal familial insomnia is an extremely rare, infectious prion disease. It involves proteinaceous cells, probably of the thalamus, that lack the ability to produce nucleic acid. It is a progressive disorder that begins with difficulty initiating sleep and leads to total lack of sleep within a few months. It can be fatal within 7 to 13 months after symptoms begin but may last longer.

It would take 7-13 MONTHS to die of insomnia? 8O I would think weeks. I bet the insanity would get you first, though.

I usually sleep well but I have the tendency of spontaneously getting up at around 4 or 5 in the morning and I can't sleep after that!

Teriffic. Now I have something else to worry about while I'm awake at 3 am. :(
Is it just me, or does it seem odd that it's fatal after 7-13 months instead of, say, 6-12 months?

Shift work doesn't help (EMR/Firefighter) then when I crash at home there's always noise, either birds sqwaking or someone deciding to mow the lawn down the road etc.

It depends for me.
Abby sleeps in our room so if her alarms go off or she is not feeling well, no sleep at all for us.
When I switch over from nights to days I do not sleep well at all.
During the days when I am sleeping I usually sleep fairly well.
When I nap before nightwork, I always sleep well.
During daywork weeks, I usually sleep fairly well.

My sleep is poor most nights too. Have problem falling asleep and staying asleep most nights. Wake up tired almost every morning. Sometimes I go for 3 days on 3 or less hours of sleep or some nights no sleep at all. When I do sleep ok it’s only about 6 hours with getting up at least once if not twice during those 6 hours to go to bathroom.
