Hey Katie...

There could be a chance that you have PCOS on top of your hypoth... that is my case and basically with PCOS you are tired, abnormal periods, occasional acne, depression, excessive hair growth in abnormal places...so you might research it and see if you do...if so its not going to keep you from getting pregnant... your insulin levels might need tweeked and they can give ya glucophage for that...it will keep your periods regulated too which will help with some of the weight gain (retaining water)....Good luck!

Hi everyone. I'm just wanting to see if i'm not alone on this struggle. I'm 21 and i was diagnosed with thyroid cancer when i was 18. Before that i never had regular period ever! but i had them. since my operation, i only have them if i take some kind of progesterone or birth control. The funny thing is i don't need birth control becauase my husband and i have been having unprotected sex for almost 6 years and never got pregnant. I have done everything to try to lose weight. It's so hard and i'm really startin to just give up. I've even taken phenteremine. I don't know what else to do. Also my husband and i really really want children. I know i'm young and everyone always says there is time, but if i haven't conceived yet, what ar emy chances of ever. Also i'm takin 150mcg of synthroid What do i do?

    I've had the same problem.
I'm 15 years old and gained over 40lbs before I even realized I had hypothyroidism. I've dropped some weight but it seems to fluctuate. It is very frustrating because my medicine along with dieting and exercise doesn't work very much, even thought I'm on 100mg.
Does anyone else know of some tricks to use for losing weight with this irritating illness?

I have had Hypothyroidism for 17 years. Used to be 116lbs and last year was 180 lbs! I found out about a diet called Ideal Protein! Absolutely AMAZING! No excerise at all! I lost almost 40lbs in 3 months and have kept it off for 4 months now with no intention of ever gaining it back as I now know what to eat and how to lose weight. I just went to the doctor this moring and all of my blood levels are better than ever AND i have to cut back my throid medication!! I am happy and feel great! Try this diet-it works!

I find the dosage thing interesting because in reading all could find online, I found out that in the 1920's and 30's there were no tests available yet to check blood levels and doctors only had their patients feedback on whether the medication was at the right dosage. MORE people were successfully treated! No doubt. What a concept, how does the patient feel? Dosages on average were higher. So maybe point this out to your doc and if they are still arrogant about blood levels, find a new doctor. I find that doctors with a DO seem much more open to this and also thing like adrenal therapy. My doctor also feels that ALL your hormones have to be right or you will never find a good dosage for your thyroid replacement. So I also went back on progesterone and estrogen and adrenal therapy. I am 56 and had complete menopause by age 44. But I did have 2 children. I am sure this problem didn't even start until 3 years ago when I had a heat stroke. that is when I started gaining weight.  I have gone from 130 lbs to about 158 and I am freaked and all of the above stories are mine regarding diet and exercise.

My problem is that even small doses of several types tried keep me awake and I start becoming very sleep deprived. But I am so frantic to get my body back that I am starting medication again. This time I am using Thyroid-S, which is from Thailand and is completely bioidentical. I believe it is both T-3 and T-4. So far it is not keeping me awake. I am taking 15 mg.s, the smallest pill is 60 so I cut it into 1/4ths.

About a year ago I tried the diet and exercise in a book called Turbocharged by Dian Griesel PHD, and Tom Griesel. I did start to lose weight, about 5 or 6 pounds, but then i had to move cross country and had to travel a lot, so I fell off. Now I am starting again, since that is the only thing I saw any improvement on. I will keep you posted.

Hi Laura, I understand what you are going through. You have to understand it takes 4-6 weeks for the medication to get fully in your body. I am going through the same thing. I have hypothyroidism and have only lost 12 lbs in 6 months. I am on a low fat diet, eat gluten free food and exercise on a daily basis. I found that running was the only way i could tone up and actually feel good. One friend that has hypothyroidism told me "just because the doctor prescibed you meds at a certain dosage doesn't mean that is right for you, go by what your body is telling you and get your blood drawn regularly" Also, my doctor said levels should be under 2 (everyone varies so just go by what your body tells you and not the doctor cuz they are not always right). good luck and do not get discouraged!

I read you need to eat 1200 calorie diet in order to lose weight. Here is a link with information. My Dr told me to eat lean meat, no carbs at all. I just found out I have hypothyroidism.

No you are not doing something wrong. It just does not work. After I was prescribed Synthroid over 40 years ago, I gained 30 pounds, which is what to expect from Synthroid, and still carry that around plus. I don't personally know of anyone who lost weight on these thyroid durgs.
