I've had the mirena for right over 2 months, I weighed in at 197 the week before I had my first and only child. Literally got down to 166 within a little over a month and now I weigh 181. I have NEVER been this size ever. Are you going to try another method of BC or..? I've taken the pill and never even gained a pound. 15 pounds in two months is outrageous and this has never happened to me.

I have had the mirena coil for 7 years and work as a personal trainer. I eat well and train a LOT. Although I have not gained massive amounts of weight my body shape has changed and I have weight around my stomach that was not there before the coil.

I got Mirena IUD 10 months ago and I've lost 12 lbs since then. I do exercise 4-5 days a week, and I am in low calorie diet. For the few first months was very hard to loose weight. After few months stop, I started to loose faster

I found this excerpt from an article about Mirena: "This device is highly effective at preventing pregnancy, but some women may experience dangerous, life-threatening side effects such as perforation of the uterus, pelvic inflammatory disease and ectopic pregnancy (pregnancy that occurs outside the uterus). The device may also spontaneously move from the uterus and embed in other parts of the body such as the uterine wall or abdomen, requiring difficult surgery to remove. Women who have experienced some of these side effects filed lawsuits against Bayer claiming that the company did not properly warn of these side effects."

I got the Mirena about 6 weeks ago as I developed anemia due to excessive bleeding from perimenopause. I specifically asked my gyno about weight gain and side effects as I already have to be very diligent with perimenopause, was also told no weight gain or side effects.
Within 4 days, I could feel the hormones flooding my body. I am not prone to depression or any sort of mood issues really but suddenly I am crying and raging. Nice.
Then the bloat and weight began. Swell. Literally.
I went back for my 4 week string check, I had gained 7 lbs. No difference in diet, same level of cardio and weight training, which is 3-4 times a week and fairly vigorous.
I definitely do not feel like me, I am much more irrational and emotional, I can't wear any of my jeans or pants, anything with a defined waistline as I am so bloated from mid-thigh to under my ribs. Also, my blood pressure went from 117/70 to 122/80 in the month, tho perhaps all the weight and angst has contributed to that.
I am going to stick it out for another month just to see if my body can normalize with it because I need to not bleed out every month. But it doesn't look like Mirena and I are compatible.
I had the copper iud for the years between my oldest and middle child, no issues, its the hormones in this device that my body doesn't like.
Bayer, and the docs who recommend this device, should be more forthcoming with the truth of how this will impact women. I read the literature given and things online before deciding on this course of action, all quite rosy. Since experiencing the down side, I have investigated more thoroughly, there are numerous forums where women are having ill-effects and the complaints are all very similar.
I would caution anyone considering this device to really look into it so that if you begin to experience any issues, you will know where it is coming from, that you have not suddenly have become lazy or crazy.
Good luck and good health, ladies.

Remember everyone is different and giving basic dietary advice isn't anything new. You say the pill didn't suit you, there will be women out there who gain weight with the mirena and are fine with the pill. Just because it works for you you can't really say it will be fine for others...

Hi I am sure that you do not look horrible but understand that you feel it! I have had my Mirena for 4 years and I exercise regularly not only for my body but it also helps my mind! I cannot lose weight either the small amount of food I eat is ridiculous but I tolerate it because before I was very anaemic from heavy periods. My Doctor prescribed Spiractin for the bloated feeling I experienced but it caused severe cramp but may suit others. Anyway I wish you all the best for your decision to either keep or get rid of your IUD.

The same thing is happening to me! I am 24, 5'8" and usually bounce between 132-135 punds. I've only had Mirena in for 6 weeks and I cant seem to lose ANY weight! No matter what I do. I am now almost 147.. it's SO frusturating because I am very active, and eat healthy but it looks like I'm bloated all the time and I feel like I have thunder thighs.. Seriously considering taking it out!
