None of these explanations make sense because in essence all the people that had poor ejection fraction or dysfunctional gallbladders should have been having the weight gain problems BEFORE their gallbladders were removed. I think that is why no doctors will discuss this with anyone because it doesn't seem a straight cause and effect and they don't want to scare off their patients from treatment if there is no solid evidence of the scare.

Before I had mine taken out (with an ejection fraction of 3%, which is basically 0%), I asked my doctor about this concern. He told me one doesn't have to do anything with the other and if that was the case I should have been obese. I ate like a pig!

I don't think this is common, only because there have been no conclusive studies and the internet forums and blogs are usually people looking for answers to problems. The people without problems don't seem to post.

I have a bicornuate uterus, which affects 1% of the world population. But from the internet you would think this is entirely common as the sun rising. Plus they all seemed to be people that had horrible miscarriages or infertility. Needless to say I scared myself sick. I got knocked up on the first try and delivered a baby to term with absolutely no problems.

So I decided the pain and anxiety of the attacks were enough for me to take the plunge and I say good ridden. I think I may not be able to eat like a machine anymore because now I might actually have bile flowing instead of just hanging out in that useless organ or backing up and GAIN weight.

Maybe check the quantity of food and not the quality. You might be eating healthier but might be eating more or bloating from certain foods. A poster said she'd been doing good on weight watchers. I also think a lot of the herbal concoction/flush pushers are circling these forums because they see $$$. So beware of that. Make sure its actually fat weight gain and the scale or pants sizes isn't just going up from gas bloating. I would even suggest not working out so much. Maybe just walk , I know working out to much can make you gain numbers on the scale. Also if you have good insurance keep going to different doctors until someone has lightbulb moment.

I know the whole weight gain thing doesn't wholly make sense but it is true nonetheless. I had an a-ha moment about that last night. I have had problems with my digestion since I had my gallbladder out but have tried to combat it with healthy food choices. The last four months I decided to get really serious about losing weight. I counted calories, drink my 8 glasses of water, never ate at night and so on. Along with that I excercise...every day....cardio and weight-training. So, how much weight did I lose? A big fat ZERO. Eight weeks of working out and being calorie conscious and nothing. I have all but lost my motivation, I mean, part of me feels like what's the point right? Excercise or not, I am still going to weigh the same. That was until I started doing some research last night and came across posts from people who had gained weight after gall bladder surgery and excercised, ate healthy and couldn't lose. I never made the connection with my gall bladder surgery before this point.
See, I always assumed my weight gain was from my giving birth to twins because obviously I gained quite a bit while pregnant. That was 10 years ago now. But then I remembered, a couple of months after I had my twins I had lost a lot of my baby weight. That's when I started having the gallbladder attacks. I had my gallbladder removed 9 months after I had my twins. It was THEN that I put the weight on!!!
I am positive that the reason I have weight on now is because of my gallbladder. No offense but most docs don't make the connection....I don't know why not. I went to my doc about my inability to lose lbs. and he was baffled. Had my thyroid checked...all is well there. He sent me to a dietitian and she was baffled as well. I am doing all the right things.
After some research and talking to a very helpful lady at the health food store I am going to begin taking bile salts and pancreatic enzymes to improve digestion. I will continue to excercise and eat well because even if I don't lose the lbs. from my middle at least I will be doing something good for my heart. It would just be nice to lose some weight too. I'll let you know if anything works!

I've just read all of these posts. And I am scared. Yes, the doctor did not tell me that this could happen. I've just had my gall bladder removed and want to know what I should do to prevent weight gain :-( .

I had my GB out 4 years ago due to pancreatitis. The weight started coming on slowly. The first little bulge on my stomach seemed "cute". UGH! It kept growing!!! I gained 60 pounds in the first year! I can get down 10 pounds, but it always rushes right back. It affects me every single day. I hate it. I've never been this shape and don't know or want to know how to dress for it. I keep fighting it, but it really is quite depressing. I continue to read posts every so often hoping someone has found something that REALLY works.

I had my gallbaldder removed in Jan 2008. I remember when I was weighed before my surgery and the nurse said that I was 11 stone and a half pounds (one stone over my healthy weight). Little did I now that this would be the last time I weighed that. Since the operation I have gained 31 pounds in weight.

What is worrying is that when I had my surgery I thought, right, now I will try and lose a stone and noticed that the weight did not budge. This concerned me at the time and I commented on it to my boyfriend. Before that, if I dieted I would lose some weight after a week or 2 now it seemed that my weight was stuck. I gave in and I put on all this weight and am now classed as obese. I am 45 years old female so know that weight gain can happen when you hit middle age, but I noticed my particular issue with weight staying put despite dieting, straight after my operation.

I have high cholesterol too and hypothyroidism, so I am so worried that it is time for being fat for the rest of my life. I used to be 8 stone in my 20s.I elected for this surgery, wish I had tried to modify my diet to stop attacks. If I could afford to have a gastric band put in I would, I am scared I will get really fat. My upper arms have cellulite look to them too and I didn't even have cellulite on my legs before.I have been eating a low fat diet over the last month or so but have lost 3 pounds only and the scale is reclaiming those pounds, today it said I had put one pound on!I was going to have a breast reduction, but due to my BMI now there is no chance. My weight is all around my tummy.

I am going to have my gallbladder out tomorrow. After reading about all the weight gain and pain people are in I really don't know what to do. I have sharp knife-stabbing pulsating pains after eating now. I am on a very low-fat diet and have lost 55 pounds in the last 6 months. I can still lose 40 pounds to get to a normal weight. I don't want to start gaining after the GB is gone. What am I to do?

If you do not have it removed it can lead to complications apparently and the excruciating pain is hard to deal with. Some people hang on to theirs for as long as they can. A gall bladder won't improve once it has started to go wrong apparently. On the morning of my op the registrar told me there is a slightly higher chance of stomach cancer after the removal which was late to tell me, but I had it out as it had me up all night with the pain and I had to work.I wish I had tried a low fat diet before I had it out just to see if I could control it (although they say it makes no difference, I had my attacks after eating high fat food usually) as I have to be on one now anyway to stop putting lots more weight on.Rosemary Connelly a fitness guru in the UK had hers removed and is slim but works at it.I lost half a stone of the weight I gained after my op at less than one pound a week. It is very slow but I want to lose 2.5 more stones. Drs do not say it makes you gain weight losing your gall bladder and some people say they lose weight after.I read somewhere that the fat digestion is worse after as the gall bladder cannot act as a drip any more putting bile into the stomach to digest the fat constantly, once the bladder is removed the bile is dumped into the stomach and does not know when to be available to digest the fat.I do not believe that this is medically proven though.I guess the drs would rather we didn't get health complications compared with not being able to lose weight so effectively anyway.Good luck with your op if you have it and losing weight after.

Wow, so far I haven't read a single solution that is consistently working for someone who has had their GB removed, which leaves little hope. I had my gallbladder removed in May 2010 and now it is February 2011 and I have gained 44 pounds. I'm a 25 year old male. I haven't been on a diet and I'm not as active as I should be, but never in my life have I gained this much weight, THIS FAST.

I'm terribly disheartened by those having trouble losing weight especially hearing how diligent and disciplined some of you are. I'm definitely not the guy hitting the gym every week.

If anybody tries something that actually works, please please please shoot me an email.

PLEASE HELP!!! I really am soo upset about this.... i am very active at my job as well as at home and with extra exercising i cant even imagine why i am not loosing any weight. I am only 25 and i am 4'10 tall so this weight shows alot. it makes me very self consious. Does anyone have any info that will help me try and lose weight.!!

I've just been to the gastroentorologist (spelling?) and he gave me a perscription for Questran which cleans the bowel of excess bile (I have bad diarrhoea) perhaps the weight I gained after having my gall bladder out will drop off as well (nothing has shifted it) . Here's hoping

The only time I saw someone with a weight issue losing weight after their gall bladder op was when they had a gastric band. It was a woman talking about her gall bladder op on Youtube.I can't afford a gastric band myself.I think I have upset the biology of my body by losing my gall bladder.

I had my Gallbladder out on 12.9.11.  I was never told either of the weight gain that may occur, although I really had no choice but to get it removed. My mother, and 2 aunts both got theirs removed around my age so I think in my family it has a genetic link. Fun for me.  Anyway, the day of surgery I weighed 175 lbs. I have since gotten down to 168 after surgery, but after Christmas it went up to 171.  I also have Hypothyroid, which from what my dr said most people have when they have bad gallbladders. It may be worth looking into.  I haven't been out of surgery long enough to really assess how my weight loss is going, however I know that even before my surgery I had difficulty losing weight from the hypothyroid before it was regulated with medication.

I had emergency surgery to remove my gallbladder 11/29/11. I was only told I didn't need my GB and I should be able to eat a normal diet after. I too weighted about 175 at surgery and got down to 168 the week or so after surgery and yes back up to 171 since christmas. I am also hypothryroid and losing weight was almost impossible before ... so now what?

I am almost 6 weeks post surgery and started feeling almost normal about a week ago. I do have some issues with gas, bloating, loose stools or I don't go for a day or so. I haven't pinned down foods that make the gas/bloating worse and the last 3-4 days I have been having heartburn. I have been on medication for this for years but it was under control until just recently.

I have right side pain - sometimes just under my ribs, sometimes at my waist and sometimes below waist..(this one I figure is gas) and sometimes (upon waking up) pain in right side/back just above waist line.

I have seen posts on just about everything but the heartburn and wonder why it is a problem when I am all ready on medication and have been prior to surgery.

Doctor said 4-6 weeks recovery and I am almost there but I am hoping the right side pain and heartburn are going to go away soon.

Any experiences, input welcomed.

I agree i have lost 5lbs in a week. Lots of fruit and water does work. My worse enemy was my meds. I have Fibromyalgia. and it hurts especially with all this extra weight. So i have stoppped taking my pain meds and no CHOCOLATE MILK at night. Which was my big problem. now as of tomorrow NO more coffee. I stopped drinking coffee on time and lost 10LBS in two weeks. So thank you for your info.
