Some people when they eat certain foods their stomach firmware those foods and makes them drunk without drinking alcohol. I don't remember what it is called though
I have been dealing with this with my boyfriend as well. Two years of dealing with Jekyll and Hyde, me thinking it is bi-polar, ptsd, depression, anxiety, he admitted to me he had a problem with vodka. Ok, so rather than getting help, he works on it on his own. He did very well for awhile, or so I thought. Three years later, I had a suspicion because he kept disappearing into the bedroom or garage. I took it upon myself to snoop in MY garage and the bedroom. Between the two, I found 13 empty paper bags from liquor store and nine empty two liter vodka bottles. I run a daycare out of my home, he no longer works due to disability (Ataxia - look it up). So anyway, he must be drinking during my business hours. Of course, he denies it. So, he cleaned himself up once again, or so I thought once again but behaviors were returningoing. I loaned him my car to bring his daughter to the airport at 4am. I was watching out the window but he thought I was asleep. I saw him go to his truck for a couple of minutes. After he left in MY car, I went into his truck. Hmmm, one empty two liter and one liter that was half empty. I cried and prayed for everyone's safety. When he returned, he went to his truck, but I had removed the bottles. We had a talk. I told him to get help or plan on moving out because I can't have this and I deserve better. I can't save him and am tired of enabling him. So, for those of you that think your loved ones aren't drinking, think again. Snoop in their vehicles, their dresser drawers, their luggage, backpacks, everything in the garage, file cabinets, gun cabinets, etc. Take care of yourself, know that you can't save them, they have to hit rock bottom. My loved one is on borrowed time with me. We'very been together for seven years and I know that he has burned so many bridges that no one will let him move in, so I will be placing a disabled vet on the street and I can't handle that thought so I keep giving him "another chance" but he's a huge liability to me. He s lost his appeal through his attitude, behavior, lies, etc. I was married to a great man for 28 years and never had to deal with anything like this. Good luck everyone! Pray that your loved ones go into treatment because mine won't as he's afraid that I'll move on while he's in treatment.
I would like to hear of anyone else here personally who has had good results from this treatment. I've been having these drunken symptoms all week and haven't had a drink all week. Your response has definitely perked my interest.
My husband does the same thing. For the last several years I have noticed that when he is tired something happens and it's like he is drunk. He does not drink, never has. Once he sleeps he is fine. He travels a lot and I can tell when he is not himself. He talks slow, repeats, and I tell him now he sounds drunk. He is 58 and had gained 50 pounds. He is currently on a diet and has lost 7 pounds. I am hoping, if he is a diabetic, the weight loss will straighten this out. I had him to the doctor and all labs came back normal. Doctor said he was exhausted. CT scan was normal. But when he gets tired he is off. When he is home or we are on vacation he is back to normal. It's not Alzheimer's or sleep would not help him. If it was neurological I would think these episodes would happen continually and sleep would not help. Maybe he is now a diabetic and his blood sugars are low. I worry about him driving back to the hotel after work or going to get something to eat. I want him to retire.
Auto-Brewery syndrome. symptoms sound the same.
Auto-Brewery syndrome causes the stomach to use excess yeast in the intestine to ferment carbohydrates and other sugary foods into alcohol.
Have you looked at Auto-Brewery Syndrome. Abc ran a piece on this condition.

My son in law is exibiting similar behaviours but mostly we all thought he was drunk. I know from an old friend that one of the symptoms of MS is just that.....appearing to be drunk when they are not. However he seem extremely "dumb" also which is not meant to be cruel but for a better lack of description.
This!!!! Happened to my dad yesterday. He was acting like he was beyond drunk. Swearing and getting aggressive. Would not let me take him to doctors. So I tricked him into going. His blood sugar was very low, 2.4. The doctor gave him bottle of coke, took 15-20mins for him to come back. Then we were told to get him a good hearty meal.
So now I know how to bring him back, thank the stars and the doctor.
Liquid sugar gets into his system faster than candy. Then a good meal to maintain and bring sugar level back up.
Make sure they check their blood sugar levels regularly.

I'm so glad to have found this thread. I've been having these issues with my mom for about a year or so now. She does have an alcohol problem, and hides alcohol, so in the beginning it was hard to tell whether she just snapped into these "episodes" or if she snuck off to drink. She never remembers when I bring it up to her and it's very difficult to deal with because she doesn't believe anything is wrong. It gets to the point where she can't form a sentence, and can't walk right. Most of the time I can tell she hasn't been drinking because of how fast she snaps in and out of it. Sometimes they last 20 minutes, sometimes it's for hours. I'm at school most of the year so I'm not sure when they usually occur or how often they do, but whenever I'm there, they occur at night or later in the day. The reason I don't think its Autobrewery Syndrome is because of the other factors. Excessive drinking, traumatic childhood, seems to be depressed. I think it might be a mental or chemical imbalance thing, I just wish she'd get it checked out.
Hi my wife has been having these drunk episodes mainly at weekends after a week working its so hard to deal with, have told her so many times to get checked out but it falls on deaf ears ,think she may think is something serious any suggestion how to get it across this is needing sorted.
I agree with you. I have some experience working with substance abuse. These people may not be drinking, but could be intoxicated with prescription drugs, That would explain why they won't seek medical help. And others probably aren't truthful with therapists or partners , family or friends. Prescription pills are at an all time high for abuse. Good luck to all of you I hope you get Somega answers, it a tough situation regardless of the cause.
My husband gets like this too. Most likely after working all day. He ate at 1pm and hasn't eaten since and it's 8pm. He walks into walls, and slurs his speech, and sometimes just passes out. He doesn't even know he walks into walls. His dad has diabetes so it may be hereditary. He actually has a doc Appt on Nov 8. Some I'm going with him since its happening too often. I'm glad I read this column because I thought he was drunk but this makes sense. Thanks. Hopefully I will find this again so I can update you all. Good luck with your situations
Needshelp - did you get a diagnosis for this? As its EXACTLY what Im going through with my husband...
I have met many people like this and it is most peculiar. A person lives a normal life working a full time job then randomly becomes a monster one day a week or more. There eyes glaze over sometimes change colour, mood becomes almost posessed like and they act as if they do not know you. It never gets investigated or diagnosed because the condition usually results in that person eventually drinking or taking drugs when they do become like this. But the drunk weird behaviour starts before the intake of drink or drugs I have noticed. Lots of kids have it and are labelled as having bad parents or fitted with an ADHD/depression diagnosis to deal with it efficiently. I dont know if its worse for the person that has it or the people around that have to deal with it. The last person I knew who had it tried blood tests for sugar level at all times be it in the mood or not and nothing unusual showed. Please keep talking about this and uploading your experiences so we can nail this
