I have had the IUD for 3 years and this last year has been a nightmare. I'm so happy I'm reading other people comments and not drive myself crazy! I feel like I'm constantly having a yeast and itchiness/redness and I spot like crazy! My sex life has gone down because I feel so uncomfortable! I have had BV aND at one point I think the worse like could it be an std? I have been a clean person and just feel it's time to take it out. As much as I can't stand the pill! Thanks for posting this!!

This is my second time getting the Mirena but however the first 5 years was great with no problems but this go round I'm having yeast infections quite often, no smell but a itching discharge. I researched this info because I don't want to accuse my husband of cheating even though he suggest I go to the Dr. I want get another I'm going back on the pills. Thanks for sharing your experience.

I feel so much better reading all these posts! I have had BV off and on for months and last year , I had a cysts. It seems like it's very common for both of these things to occur and I thought something was wrong with. I am making an appointment to get the mire a removed!

I have had the Mirena since 2007. It's been almost 10 years now and I have had 2. I haven't had any problems with weight gain, mood swings, spotting, or any other symptoms as listed for the Mirena. I have however experienced numerous yeast infections every year. The first few years I almost constantly had a YI and just recently found a way to help prevent it. Summer's Eve wash for your V! I can't live without it! There is always still a "discharge" and a smell that I think is unpleasant that never goes away. This never use to be a problem prior to the Mirena. I am a clean person and I shower frequently and take care of myself so this was concerning. My OBGYN says that it is not because of the Mirena but I really believe it is. I have only had one period in the last almost 10 years, which is the only reason I keep it.

Thankyou for all your answers .This helps me as i have had the non hormonal mirena in for 4 years now , its a 10 year one so ive been told. but recently in the last 12 months i have had numerous bv infections that were only picked up by swabs due to abdominal pain. The dr says its not the iud but i am married and dont have numerous partners so i was getting worried about why these infections are occurring now . Makes me think its the iud or hormonal changes as im forty.:(

I just had it inserted 2 days ago. And I think I am allergic to it. My uterus is swollen. I am having discharge and its a mild burning feeling on my uterus. I have slight itchyness inside. I am going to try 1 round of BV meds and if it doesn't calm down it's coming out

I have had to take probiotics. A vinegar douche will give immediate relief, but it really threw my system off and the probiotics stopped BV type reactions.
Look for the probiotics for women or vaginal health.

I been getting Bacteria Vaginosis for a Year and a Half. My doctors have ran every test on me and it always came back as a BV! I keep telling my Doctors it has to be from the IUD! I have never been to the dr from the same thing so much in my life! Almost every time i have sex that odor comes back. I'm so sick of it. I'm having the IUD removed next week! Back to birth control pills!!

Using Probiotics I have been able to eliminate BVI and the smell totally.
The douche with Apple Cider Vinegar would eliminate it right after sex or can be done daily, but probiotics has balanced everything and I dont have to douche at all.
It took me a bit of time to find the right formula but I am glad I did. My doctor was no help whatsoever.

I also, am at risk for heart problems. I had a heart attack two years ago on my 35th birthday.. I had complications with my last child and cannot take bc pills. I have had four bv infections and hate it! I do not feel comfortable making love to my husband because of the odor. I am a very clean person, take daily showers, even clean up after intercourse. I didn't know what was causing them until today. I am almost 100% that the IUD is the cause. I am making another gynecologist appt tomorrow to discuss removal. Thank you so much for sharing! Everyone! I know now, that I'm not alone in this!!

I never had the mirena, but i do have an appointment in a few days to get one. I was concerned because i am susceptible to BV, but my GYN told me mirena won't cause it. But i decided to do some research anyway because it disnt sound right. Glad i came upon this thread bc i think im going to cancel my appt now. Anyway, i thought id also share a piece of information that i learned from my experiences with bv. My bf at the time and i always had unprotected sex. Everything you read says its not transmitted sexually, and while its not initially caught that way, i had found that it WAS part of the reason it had became chronic for me. I kept getting it iver and over and over again and i didnt know why and everything said that men cant get it, but i was doing everything right! Well, one day i came across an article that suggested during unprotected sex, the bv can get pushed into the hole in the penis and since men have no symptoms they dont realize its in there. Since i had already tried everything i begged my (very resistant) bf at the time to get checked out. The (male) dr he chose said the same thing as most research i came across that men cant get it, but prescribed him flagyl pills just in case eithout even giving him an exam. He took all the pills and i did my metro-gel simultaneously and after that i literally never got bv again. so, if you're in a similar situation i was in doing everything right, and it won't stop coming back... Maybe ask your significant other to just take the pills. They cant hurt him at all if he doesnt have the bacteria so its worth a try.

I have the same exact problem. I keep bacterial vaginosis. I have had mirena since 2009, and was replaced in 2015. The first 5 years were okay. But this time it's just horrible. The smell is embarrassing, and my doctor knows about it. She always wants me to keep coming in to check me out, and every time I go its the same story, I always have BV. And then she knows that the antibiotic in the Metronidazole gel causes a yeast infection and she never prescribes anything for the yeast infection. She's milking my bank account with all of these visits for the same stuff. I can't hide the smell to save my life, I've tried Rephresh Vaginal Gel, it works but only for a short amount of time. Noroforms are a bad idea, right along with douching and using feminine powder, wipes and wash. It's embarrassing to have sex with my finance, and we have to crack windows before we start because the smell is so loud afterwards.... Mirena is a big help as far as not getting pregnant, but it's too much work trying to keep bacterial infections away. The pill or a patch might be my next option, because I can't take this too much longer.

after about 2 yeas if having an IUD I had it removed because of the recurring vaginal infections THESE WERE MY SYMPTOMS: obvious odor, discharge, random pelvic pain, no period for the entire 2 years the IUD was inserted, and occasional sharp pain during sex

Now its been nearly 3 years since the IUD was removed and i STILL have these symptoms. I read in one of the comments on this thread that the bacterial infection could attach itself to the string of the IUD and with recurring infections (bacterial over growth) could spread into our body. now ive thought about that theory quite a bit and i think its true... think about.. we take a prescription to resolve the infection from our system but the prescription does not close the traces of the infection that have attached to the IUD/string. the way i see it if you done clear the source of the problem youre just re exposing yourself to the issue...

I really dont know what to do at this point. im diagnosed with a BV every few months! my doctor percribed vaginal insert (boric acid) to use every month for PH balance... now as of late i have the added issue of UTI. i didnt have these problems before the IUD. ive changed my soap i dont use anything "perfumy" around my vag, i wear dresses more than pants, and i dont wear tight undies, i opt for seamless panties (calvin klein from macys) instead of thongs... to no avail :/
