Hi everyone, I was just diagnosed with diabetes type 2 and my BG was 12.2. I'm throughly confused. I'm still not sure what that means and my doctor wants to put me on insulin right away. This is all new to me and I'm not sure what I need to do. All of you diabetics out there, can you help me please? I'm not sure what normal readings are but apparently this is very high. How high is it? What can I do right away to correct this. I see my diabetes manager next week but I'm kind of afraid at the moment. I have a fair amount of tingling in my lower legs and feet. My doctor says this might be a neuropathy.

Hello, I'm a type 2 and your BG of 12.2 is very high. No doubt you are confused. According the the American Diabetic Association you should shoot for 6.5 or at least below a 7 and of course if you can get even lower that is better yet. Below a 7 is considered reasonable for a type 2. I had high readings initially and it took me a year to get to 6.4 and I'm very pleased with that. It was a long hard road getting my diet under control and doing the exercises I needed to do but I got there. I know you will too. If your doctor hasn't given you a diet plan yet maybe your diabetic manager will. It's a good idea to start diet as soon as possible. If you stay too high for too long you could have all kinds of repercussions like developing a neuropathy. You might be having problems with concentrating on things and getting yourself organized. When you get your blood sugar under better control much of that will go away. Hopefully you have family members that can help you with that. I did and they were a God send. Your exercises are important as well and make sure you keep up with that. I wish you the best of luck!
