ha ha I figured someone would stick up for the USA. I have to admit it would be nice if you could stay in the hospital and be flushed out and catheter removed before you went home. I am having green light and have had to have a catheter put in and taken out and freaked when the doc told me I could take it out at home. Owwwww

Hi I've had a laser prostatectomy 18 days ago in Sydney, Australia and have experienced a burning sensation at the tip of the penis when passing urine for about 14 days. It's still there but getting better. I also continue passing blood at the start of urination but midstream urine is clear. The normal pattern has been that I drink a glass of water with a splash of cranberry juice (for taste) every half an hour or so after breakfast. It's then a case of water in, water out. Initial blood in urine is always less common on a full bladder. I stop drinking at night in the hope of having a good night's sleep and pass urine during the night in a plastic bottle - up to five times from 10.00pm to 6.00am. This is where blood is visible (in concentrated urine). I find that the initial stream is quite red but that the midstream is fine (normal yellow). My main problem has been that I caught a nasty uti on the night of my release when I started experiencing fever, chills and shakes. Not pleasant. My GP changed my initial antibiotic (resistant to the uti) and it took me twelve days to start feeling better. As a passing comment, in Australia it's no use attempting to obtain advice from your urologist as staff at reception always direct you to your GP! I will keep you posted on progress.. One question to anyone who may be able to help - my uti has now disappeared but my GP is recommending - rather strongly - that I postpone a long planned overseas trip by 2 to 3 months - the rationale being that he would not want me to travel when I'm still bleeding. Has anyone experienced blood in the urine beyond 4 weeks ? Many thanks.

I am 74 years old and have a moderately enlarged prostate BPH
Before I had “Green Light” laser turp. Checked out several forums. I have since come to the conclusion that people are more apt to report poor outcomes than good ones.

I have been taken “Flomax” for about 15 years. For most of that time I took one 0.4 mg capsule a day. Over the years my stream continued to decrease. About a year ago I started taking two capsules a day. The improvement was modest. My main complaint was slow starting and a long time finishing. This wasn’t too bad during the day, but at night if I had to get up (always two to four times) I would be wide awake by the time I got finished. I also found it a little embarrassing in public restrooms because I had to spend so much time in front of the urinal.

So I started to investigate various surgical procedures to improve my condition. I narrowed it down to “Urolift” and “Green Light” laser turp. My urologist does both. He suggested “Green Light” laser surgery because he has had much more experience with that procedure and it was far easier to get my Medicare Advantage provider to approve the procedure. He also noted that the large majority of his patients were happy with their outcome.

I opted for the “Green Light” procedure. This is being written 4 days after the procedure so that I wouldn’t forget anything. After reading many online reports from others I wasn’t totally sure about my expectations.

Long story short: I am extremely happy with the immediate results.

I had the procedure done at 7:30 AM on a Wednesday morning under general anesthesia and my wife picked me up at 11 AM to take me home. After the surgery I was fitted with a catheter and a leg bag. They gave me a larger bag to take home for night time use. My doctor recommended that that I leave it in until Friday morning. The only pain the butt about this procedure is having to use a catheter for a day or two. In fact the only real pain and discomfort is from the use of the catheter.
The doctor told me there would be some sporadic blood and tissue bits in the urine for a while.
I had very little blood and tissue in my urine, but it would start and stop. Sometimes my urine would be clear for a while and then a little blood would show up. The nurse at the hospital showed me how to remove the catheter before I left. Friday morning I removed the catheter. I drank lots of water and waited to try out my new plumbing. Amazingly my very first time I was peeing like a teenager!
I honestly don’t remember when I had such a great flow. I feel great and the biggest problem I will have is to take it very easy for three weeks as my doctor ordered. No exercise or lifting over 10 lbs for two weeks and still nothing too strenuous for the next week. I have had no residual pain except for the head of my penis which was irritated by the catheter. (My doctor gave me some pain pills which was mainly needed for the catheter irritation.
I have not noticed any decrease in urinary frequency at this time. It may be a while before my bladder is retrained. In the meantime, I almost look forward to peeing it is so great to be able to instantly start and pee like a teenager.
My continued research on “Green Light” laser turp indicates that the success rate is about 98%
Since this is considered a low risk procedure I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone having a BPH problem.

I also had the green light surgery about two years ago. Had many complications, the Cath kept clogging up with dead tissue. Had to go to ER to remove clog. My urine was backing up in my system very painful. They taught me how to flush water into my bladder to clear the clogs. Had to keep Cath in for ten days. At this point in time. Had to start flowmax again. If I knew now what the outcome was I would not have done it. I may be one of the bad cases, hope u have a better outcome

I am 7 days past. Had laser surgery for prostrate , had a tumor removed from my bladder and a stent put in bladder before removing the tumor. Had catheter in from Thursday - Monday, extreme pain when I had to pee. Irrigated numerous time and in signs of infection, taking 500 mg of cipro twice daily . After the catheter was removed has some improvement in flow but that has gotten worse over the last 4 days. I have the urgency to goo all of the time but extreme pain to pass any urine. I am told the stent is the culprit but cannot take out for 2 weeks so I am generally ok until I have to pee then it is extreme pain with very little urine passing. I am drinking as much water as I can I hate just drinking water, but if I had to do it all over again would not do it. I am also recently divorced and had a vasectomy which was not to smart but the doctor was not against it. I have oxycodone 10/325 that do nothing for the pain so I do not use anything. I just pray allot and hope for the best

The decision to do this was thought out for a long time. I also suffer from sleep apnea and waking up 4-6 times a night never allowed me to get the sleep I needed to help me get any real rest. I am physically and mentally burnt and have no idea what I am going do next if this does not heal properly

In 2006 I could barely urinate, so I went to Mayo Clinic in MN for urgent surgery. They lasered my prostate, and I spent one night in hospital and then was discharged with NO orders or any description of what to expect. My urine had blood in it and urination was quite painful, so I was scared and went to see the surgeon. She assured me that this was all normal, gave me instructions, and I went home quite relieved. It did all settle down, and urination became almost normal, though still frequent, waking me about three times per night.

Three months later I went back to Mayo for a follow-up, and I notified the two doctors that my penis seemed to have shrunk considerably and was now difficult to retrieve to urinate. They said it was because I had gained weight. Though obese (6'2" and 300 pounds when I should be 200 pounds), my weight was the same BEFORE the surgery as it was three months later, so the doctors were blowing smoke. They did not want to let the little secret out about penis shrinkage (possibly due to lowered testosterone production?).

The surgeon did tell me that they had difficulty during surgery because the blood vessels in my prostate were so dense, and the blood had to be suctioned while they worked, and she did tell me that they purposely (for whatever reason, I don't know) cut the sphincter to my bladder.

Now it is 10 years later, and urination has become difficult again. The frequency has remained the same (7 to 10 times in 24 hours ... up at night once or twice), and the penis size seems to have shrunk further until it is quite difficult to dig it out to urinate. Recently my doctor gave me Lasix, and this has enabled me to have normal, strong urinations again.

Additionally, though ejaculate had slowly diminished over the years prior to the surgery, soon after the surgery it just stopped altogether but for maybe a small drop of clear liquid. Either the ejaculate is now totally retrograde or there simply is no ejaculate. I'm 75 and stopped having sex 30 years ago (I overdid it for 25 years and just got burned out), so now I just test the thing about every two months. At this point it seems I may be ready for ANOTHER prostrate surgery or may just have to take Lasix forever. If I do choose surgery, hopefully there is a new method that is not so destructive that my penis shrinks further and finally just disappears!

.....for what it is worth, my urologist mentioned "...it would be 6 months of rehab."
My PVP surgery was 10 days ago. General anesthesia. Went home with catheter remaining in place for 5 days! I loved my catheter....I called it "auto pee."

Now I am getting blood in my urine and yeah----my hunch is that my urine flow is being blocked by a "scab." Or blood clot? Painful. This is really the material that got lasered away in order to enlarge channel through prostate. I was told my urethra got blasted away by the green laser light therapy. The urethra gets to grow back.....
No picnic.

David pal, I take the liberty to call you with such confidence simply because you we are twins as to the post operative symptoms that you had, are exactly as mine are at present time.
The bleeding on or after starting voiding and the pain in the urethra, specially at the end of my penis, exactly like behind the head. I thank you for your input, it clarify much of what was ignoring. The bottom line is that has been painful and looks like I better set myself for a long recovery. Again thanks man!
