I am 42 years old woman and for the last 6 months I have been having trouble coming up with words I am trying to say.  I will be right in the middle of a sentence and have to stop because I can't remember the word that should come next.  Or, sometimes I combine two words.  I might be commenting of the weather and in my mind I am trying to decide between saying, "It is hot today" and "It is warm today" but what comes out is..."It is whot today".  It is really concerning me and wearing on my self-confidence.  Can you please tell me what might be causing the problem and how it can be helped.

Hey annabell

I do this all the time lol my daughter say's I can even slur on occasion too, which I never notice and I even forget what I am saying mid sentence,  or where I'm driving to and the route I need to take I mean it can be something really important and poof it's gone.  Regards just the mixing of words there can be many reasons for this, some not medical just simple your mouth acts before your brain has made the final thought of the word your going to choose.  There are also medical conditions some of the more serious ones would be caused when you totally mix words, for example.  You want to say I need to buy some bread and jam, saying I need to buy some jead and bram is not too much of a mix up, if you got the words totally wrong for example Instead of saying I'm going to bed now, you might say  I'm going to table.  Another example of more severe mixing of words would be 'Can I have a spoon for my soup' instead saying ' I need a knife for my soup,   it could indicate one of the more serious conditions.  I'll try and mention some of the ones I learned about recently, as I had to do a lot of research for a host of symptoms I had, the speech being one of them, which for me turned out to be thyroid related...If it was this with you it is very likely you would have many more symptoms.

Firstly you could just be getting older we all seem to get more forgetful in general as we age hormones and even menopause can factor into speech issues.  It could be something as simple as extra stresses in your life occupying your mind and you loose concentration on the task in hand anxiety can be a big factor in concentration it stands to reason this extends to your speech too. During my searches for my own issues  other more serious matches popped up such as Alzheimer's, dementia, fibromyalgia and .m.s but again if these were even remotely likely there would be other clear symptoms.  As I said for myself it turned out to be thyroid related it's referred to as 'brain fog' apparently the thyroid issue (related to the speech and other forgetfulness) mimics a type of dementia which is reversible once thyroid levels are normalized.  As you can see from the list I discovered it could be oh so many things.  My advice would be to keep an eye on it, if you have other symptoms mention these too, and if it becomes troublesome consult a DR.

I hope this helped you a little, sorry I could not be more specific
