The pain for me today is excruciating. Everything on my left side is stiff. I get a mild earache pain in neck every few months. but today is awful - the swallowing is horrible. When I speak I get nauseated from the pain. I had mild pain for a week, went away yesterday, and then early this morning, pain.

I feel the left side of my neck each time this happens and always feel a bump. However. this is due to swelling and is nothing I can do to cure this.

This started about 5 years ago (I am 39) and was worried about cancer, but came to find out it is TMJ - a MRI revealed nothing. I visited an old, gruff doctor who has probably seen 100,000 patients. He says 50% of them have TMJ and there is, according to him, very little anyone can do.

Still, I will see the ENT again - just to see if there is anything new. I somewhat think it has to do with the change of seasons. At one time I thought it was lack of sleep from our baby keeping me up all night or something I picked up from her.

It is certainly not psychological - anyone who says that is completely beknighted in this area.

Okay what the hell do we all have. Mine started about three weeks ago. I went to my university health center for throat pain; doctor said i had a tonsil infection. Took the ten days worth of anti-biotic, but never really felt truly healthy. When I came back to school after spring break, my throat pain got worse. Its starts off very painful in the morning, then eases throughout the day and gets the worse at night. Every day or 2 days it switches from the left side of my tonsil and tongue to the right side. Sometimes its so bad I just want to put a bullet in my head. So after a couple days I went back to the health center and a different doctor gave me a single dose of a steroid to help the swelling, because she just thought its was a viral infection. The steroid helped for a day, but know my opposite side of my throat and tongue is killing me again. This is starting to really piss me off, because I have no idea what it is. I stopped smoking today so hopefully that will clear it up. ANYONE WITH ANY INFO PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it took me about 5 weeks to get over whatever that horrible thing was. I was going crazy with the intense pain and I was so scared to swallow, I just wanted to cry! But now after I just got over that I am sick again with some kind of infection. This is so frustrating for me. I never found out what was causing my sore throat so I can't really help anyone with that. Mine started on the right side and also made the back of my tongue sore and then it moved to the left and stayed there for what seemed like forever. Are any of you always sick? I feel like I am constantly battling something and this sore throat was so painful I feel for all of you! To the person above one post me, my student health center said LPR a type of acid reflux could be my problem but I doubt it since it went away, supposedly it has similar symptoms to what we are experiencing. This is so strange that no doctor has explained to anyone what this is when we all have the same symptoms of back of tongue pain and it switching sides.

I too have throat pain on the left side. No clue what it is, but it's good to know I've got a lot of company. It feels muscular, but I've been fooled before. My current theory is that it could be allergies, it could be GERD, it could be a pulled muscle due to stress, or it could be an infection of some kind.

I've had something similar before and it was an infection stemming from a cyst underneath a tooth, so if you're on an antibiotic and it keeps coming back, go get some dental x-rays. Antibiotics only kill the current infection, they don't fix the source. It's symptoms were: an enlarged gland at my throat, no ear pain, and discomfort whenever I turned my head to the side. I have GERD, so initially I thought it was reflux, but each day I started to find it progessively more difficult to open my jaw. After 4 days I went to an emergency dental clinic who prescribed me Penicillin, which took care of it in about 3-4 days. Hope this info helps someone! :-D

I have been experiencing this nagging tight/painful sensation in my throat for a few months now. Having quite a history of eating disorders (anorexia 4 years, bulimia&anorexia 3 years) I thought it may have something to do with that, but I also have a sinus surgery approx 6 mos ago and thought perhaps it was related to that. However, I realized that the feeling is significantly aggravated after I take 50mg vyvanse, an ADD stimulant medication which I am prescribed and essentially need to be able to function, but I do not believe I had this throat issue until I switched to vyvanse from adderall. When I took more in order to stay awake for exams (only once!) 3 days in a row, I actually had bleeding in my throat. I immediately went to the ER and had an x-ray, endoscopy and have had a couple endoscopies since, and there is nothing discernible so we are all stumped.

I have the same thing. One day I woke up and my left side of my throat, ear, and tong where all in pain. After about 3 days my tong developed small white patches (as if I bit my tong and it was healing) and then it stopped hurting. Now the back of my throat still hurts even more with shots of pain to my ear. I've had this pain for about a week now. I tried looking in the back of my throat with a flash light and I can see that it's enlarged and red with what looks like a white line (probably infection?). I have no idea what it is but from the sounds of what everyone else has, I think it's a virus or some form of infection. It could possibly be that people have ear infections from allergy's and the ear is dripping in the back of your throat causing a throat infection too. I have a long history of ear infections so I figured id toss that out there just in case everyone else does too. I plan to talk to a doctor and take some penicillin this week to see if that clears it up.

Wow, at first i thought it was nothing but just to be safe, i'll check the internet for this. I cant believe how many other people have this.

I only get the pain in the left side of my throat when i am smoking. Not when im coughing, yawning or anything. it starts right after i inhale the smoke then stops after about 15 seconds, only to return as soon as i take another puff. Its really frieking me out.

Hi everyone,

I had tonsillitis two weeks ago followed by bronchtitis. Was given antibiotics. Now I have allergy symptoms and Im taking Claritin

My issue is the left side of my throat. It hurts very bad when I yawn, swallow or stick my tongue out.

Heading to the doctor today, I'll try to post back and tell you what he says. Like a previous poster said, I am always sick.

On top of that, I have severe health anxiety. So this is really hard for me to deal with. I smoked for 15 years and drank lots of alcohol so cancer is a huge fear for me...

I just want to feel better...how is everyone else doing?

Yay There's lot's of us! Misery indeed loves company. I've been having this thick/dry sensation in my left throat and back-left side of my tongue that also radiates to my ear. It doesn't really go away so i usually try to forget about it but every now and then I feel it there. I saw 2 doctors about this already and they keep diagnosing me with rhinitis and kept on prescribing nasal sprays and antihistamine. Now, the owner of the drugstore next door is driving a ferrari while i'm still stuck with this problem. What the hell are we afflicted with?

My doctor suggested Mucinex in the red box, which contains sudafed, so it can only be found behind the counter. She said the throat pain was from congestion. I had it really bad all over my throat, and I didn't have strep and my throat was only a little red. For a few days I thought I was going to die because it hurt so bad. It felt as if my tongue was swoolen, and it was getting difficult to swallow. She said there were 1000's of people who have whatever it is this season and the doctors really don't know what it is, but are blaming it on allergies. I took Claritin for one day and the red box Mucinex for 2 days and got better. After a couple days, the pain has been localized to the left side, but i haven't taken anything for it yet. I think I'll try the red box Mucinex again. Good luck if you have it too!

I started having my pain 2 days ago, also with pain on left side of temple. I have taken ibuprofin, but its no help. It seems like I have had this before one other time, and it was a pulled muscle. This has bothering me so much, that I "Googled" on here this morning about it, and fortunately I found this site, and now know several others are experiencing the same thing. I am going to do a little more research on the throat, muscles, etc., to try and find some answers. Good Luck everyone! :'(

It started 14 days ago, I took antibiotics and gargled hot salt water, along with this mess came a stuffed nose and dry coughing, that turned into asthma. Well after 10 days of round the clock medication and gargle, it was better, however, my throat looked like someone stirred it with a fork! I went off meds then 2 days later it's back! I stopped smoking 12 years ago. My husband stopped 20 years ago and he brought this mess home from grocery shopping (very germy). I don't have tonsils but I feel it could be strep. My throat seemed to have white areas, some streaking. But the pain is down at the base of my tongue and primarily now on the left. However, experience tells me if I don't gargle it will move to the right also. I am going my "mexican" antiobiotics (same as ours) and if I don't pull myself together once and for all I will go to the doc. I hate to as they seem to know NOTHING!
