FYI - I've noticed my pain is worse if I'm having bad acid reflux. I believe it is the problem. I'm going to try Prilosec.

I had a bad throat infection before Christmas, it was there for a good two weeks and then went, didn't feel like doing anything and cried with pain. I took anti's and it went. Then a week after Christmas it came back, I ended up in hospital where I was told it was just a viral thing and not to take antis but just ibuprofen and paras! But ever since I have had an awful pain on the left side of my throat/tonsil. I am a smoker and noticed if I smoke slightly more a day it hurts an awful lot more! I am feeling very down about it and worried! I don't want to go to the doctors as they'll just fob me off with "its nothing".

Omg! I thought I was alone!
My pain started in October 2008, after having a couple of back teeth pulled.
I was on antibiotics and then I started getting sick with pain in my left side of throat. My tongue became numb and white, (thrush maybe), accompanied by sinus problems. The pains has since gone to my left ear too!
I went to the doctor, the emergency room approximately 11 times!!! I have no insurance, but they tried to treat me anyway! I was having anxiety because this pain was scaring me!
I had many x-rays, nuclear heart stress test, CT scans with contrast on my lungs, intravenous antiboitics, blood work, multiple EKG's, pap smear, mammogram & my blood was drawn so many times I had bruises on my arms.
Still I was told that there was nothing wrong with me!!! I was convinced I was dying of cancer or some terminal disease. My doctor has basically given up on me, and has referred my to a psychologist, because she thinks I am depressed!
HELLO>>>maybe i am depressed bc there is no explanation for the pain in my left throat!
I have turned to breathing in boiling water with a towel over my head, and doing saltwater garggles. And I found that eating yogurt on a regular basis helps with getting rid of the white patches on my tongue!
I do have GERD, and only started taking Nexium after all of these symptoms. But still the pain in my throat persists!
PLEASE! If anyone finds out what this is e-mail me! _[removed]_
I'm convinced it was due to one of 3 things!
1. the flu shot
2. dental work
3. antibiotics

Heyy all. So I have the exact same problems as some of you. My pain was only on the left side of my throat. I wasn't hungry a lot and I had a bit of a fever. Turned out when I went to the doctor I had mono. Or as some call it "the kissing disease" hope that was helpful... Good luck!! :-)

Hey all, I've had similar symptoms to many of you and I've seen multiple doctors and I think sharing my experiences would help some of you.

Now, I am a 21 year old male, non-smoker who has been prone to sinus infections my whole life. I've always felt the left gland in my throat behind my jaw to be more swollen than the left and it was never painful until about 8 months ago. I feel the pain in the gland area, and it radiates into the back of my mouth, jaw and ear. It is especially worse when I'm under stress or I touch it (very sensitive).

ADVICE: See an ENT. These urgent care doctors just want to get you out of the room and get to the next patient. Even then, however, the ENT has been baffled by my condition. My tonsils were taken out and the ENT found that some of the tonsil tissue had re-grown. I went under the knife and the ENT removed the re-grown tissue and also had my gland biopsied. It came back negative for major throat cancers but she did not pull enough cells to get tested for Lymphoma.

So, I've seen a Hematologist who ran me through a CT scan of my lymph nodes of my entire body, which came back negative thankfully. I am getting an MRI to provide the doctor with another view. I am not out of the woods yet for Lymphoma, but it would appear that I do not have it.

Lymphoma is somewhat scary because it is a condition that comes on very subtlely and doesn't have specific symptoms outside of swollen gland. A million other things could make your gland swollen and Lymphoma advances now have the survival rate up to 90%.

Needless to say, this is a horrible condition. I just deal with pain in that area every single day. My experiences with these specialists is that even they do not fully understand gland issues and too often do not thoroughly seek out your problem. I can literally feel like the left gland is swollen, but none of these doctors with their tests can see it because it's a subtle swelling, nothing major. But it provides major pain.

ADVICE: Do not EVER feel rushed by your doctor during a visit. Force them to physically feel your gland and point out to them every area of pain. They tend to ask you questions that will frame the problem into what they think it is and it is easy to quickly just say things because they are rushing. Just slow down, and explain EVERYTHING.

To the girl above me, you are not crazy and you are certainly not alone.

Like all of you, my sore throat is frustrating and painful. It makes me feel so helpless because I've tried so many things and nothing seems to make me any better.

Mine started with a cold (or maybe seasonal allergies), then a sinus infection and drainage, mucus clogging me up, then I had the respiratory flu for a couple of days (which is awful). Now, everything is cleared up EXCEPT for my painful throat.

Mine is also on the left side, most days, and hurts terrible to swallow. It is red and swollen, but I don't see any white spots. I also do not have health insurance, so I went to a clinic after being sick for a month because I was desperate. Ninety dollars later, I had a free prescription for amoxicillen. Here I am 2 weeks later with the same problem and no comfort or solution. I am missing out on work because I feel so awful. I am a substitute teacher, so you really need to have function of your throat to be effective. Plus, it is a trying job, so being in my best health is critical to my success for the good of the kids.

So, I've taken cold medicine, allergy medicine, amoxicillen, more zyrtec, hot tea, salt water gargles, pain medicine and warm honey and lemon. None of it really helps much at all. The pain medicine is the only thing that helps me function, but I feel for my poor liver. I hate to take medicine too much because I don't want to weaken my body's natural healing abilities for the future. Plus, most of this c**p only addresses the symptoms, not the cause. Dear God, heal our bodies and help us to move past this. I just want to be better and normal again.

For all of you who are feeling the same way, I wish you healing and comfort. You are not alone. I'm going to go try to rest it off again. Maybe it will work this time...

Me too guys... sore throat, tongue, it's giving me headaches on my left side... I think I need to go see a dr but everytime I go she says it's stress from my exams, which it could be but I'm not sure. Plus I don't have time to go to the drs as I'm a full-time student and i work part-time. hope you all get better soon xxx

I've had a sore throat on the left side for over a month. The doctor sees absolutely nothing so I said I'd wait it out. Could it be "referred pain" from some other place in the body? But where? It seems like a fair number of people have this problem.

I'm a 36 yr old non-smoker and have this same thing that started a couple of days ago. The pain comes and goes, but is much better than a couple of days ago, so maybe just temporary.
