I'm there with ya. I had a partial knee done in Feb of 2009, then Aug 2009 they had to go in and "clean it out" because it snapped in the shower and I couldn't straighten it. Then in November it snapped again and it was so painful and felt like it would break. Had to go in November and have the partial removed and a total knee done! Work said I had to be back in 4 weeks or I was fired since I used up FMLA from the other two surgeries. I'm going for a second opinion with a different group of docs because I still can't walk downstairs and it is still painful and interferring with my quality of life and work. Just wanted to let you know you are not alone. Wish I had never started this journey.
Hello Everyone, It is so sad to hear that you or I can't even get a good knee replacement as advanced as the medical field is today. My knee problems started when I was a young teen, I had my first knee surgery at the age of 18 and now have under gone a total of "60" knee surgeries. I have out of those "60" surgeries have had 5 TKR. They did Three on my left knee, each time something would go wrong with one of the parts and they would do a revision. The last TKR on my left knee turned out to be a NIGHT MARE that I never woke up from. I contracted a Staph infection from the hospital, it ate a whole and tunneled up and down my leg. I ended up loosing my knee altogether. The surgeon had to fuse my joints together, they had to take the knee joint completely out so I can no longer bend my leg and now my left leg is 2" shorter than my right leg. I had to under go High pressured oxygen treatment, where they put you in that long tube and feel your body with nothing but pure oxygen, I had around the time home health care because I had IV therapy with Vaccamicin for 4 months. All of this because who ever made my knee replacement had a major recall.
My nightmare doesn't stop there, I have also had 2 TKR on my right knee and a partial replacement done in Feb. this yr., The manufactor of my implant is Smith & Nephew, in 2003 they had a MAJOR RECALL ON TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENTS, I had one and every since then I have had nothing but major pain, it has caused me to have to have, hip surgery on both hips, lower back surgery and so many other complications. I went to the Dr.'s this past week because the pain in my right knee is getting worse not better since he did the partial replacement and he informs me that I have to have a TKR all over again the whole joint this time because it is broken again inside my leg. His explanation to me for this is because Smith & Nephew doesn't require their implants to be concreted in, so they start to losen and move around until a part breaks off. I settled out of court with them on my last recall because it wasn't concreted in, then come to find out that they did the same thing again, while they had their reps in the operating room with me. There is no way I will settle out of court with them this time around.
I am telling my story so that others of you who have gone through the pain and suffering that I have maybe you will have a heads up on this company,,,ask your Doctor if your implant is concreted in for stability. My pain is so severe that I can't even take 10 steps with out feeling like someone is jabbing a large knife into my joint, now I live on pain pills to cover up the pain that I know won't go away without someone doing the right thing. These companies need to stand up for their products and patients need to fight back when we know that it isn't right. If I had it all to do over again I would never have undergone the first surgery even though the pain was extreme this is worse. Since the replacements my pain management dr. even sent me all the way to Boston to talk to a dr. about amputating my left leg so that I could have a normal life, because right now I don't have a normal life. I have a leg that doesn't bend, makes me limp, throws my back and hip out of place, stops me from being able to walk or even run, and I am a 41 year old mother of 4 girls, so I feel that my life was taken from me because these doctors that we pay out the rear for decided that I needed 60 surgeries to both of my knees.
I have never ever met anyone like myself, who has undergone 60 knee surgeries, and each one was because something wasn't done right with the one before that. The surgeon who put me through all of this was killed in a car accident, so now I struggle trying to find a surgeon willing to fix what he has destroyed.
I wish everyone luck out there with their TKR surgeries and hope that you will soon find the relief you so deserve, prayers have kept me sane through my struggles, and I think the more we all speak out about our syptoms the better they will listen to us. I am still on my journey to fix my knees and I hope and pray that some day they will work the way they where meant to again.

I had a TKR in March 2011, had problems from the start. Had 2 manipulations in 4 months. Better bend but a lot of pain and gives out if I try and walk normal, I have a severe limp. On pain meds which I hate, but can't deal with the constant pain, went through a terrible depression too. No doc in town would help me, went to Sarasota where my daughter is a PA for an ortho. He recommended Dr . Stolorski, he checked synovial fluid for infection and set up a complicated blood test to see if I was allergic to the metal in the new knee... I am very allergic to nickel which is in my knee. I have to go in for a revision in 2 weeks, and I am scared to death!!! This past 11 months has been a total nightmare, a lot of it mentally, depressed, anxiety, fatigue etc...
I had TKR a little over a year ago, he used a BIG male knee and I have had more pain since he did it than before I had it done. He keeps telling me there is nothing wrong. It swells so big I cant bend my leg, it hurts to be touched and the pain goes all the way up my thigh and all the way down to my foot. I am 56 years old, I have gained so much weight and cant stand the pain to even try walking or riding my bike any more. I am on antidepressants, blood pressure meds and anti anxiety meds, probably forever. I dont have any family so another TKR is not an option right now. I would like to say, God Bless all of you. Anne

hi name is tina howard and i had a knee replacement with a metal 5 months ago october 25, 2011 then they when back in my knee in did a scope on feb7, 2012 i can;t walk a long period of time my knee hurts so bad and lot;s of swelling and i only can bend my knee up to 65 degree what do i do next
i had my left knee replaced 8 years ago i have pins and needles feeling for the last two years went to the doctors they did xray and said it was not the knee but now the feeling is getting worse can someone help
blah not gonna retype it all just cut y leg off i can no longer deal after two year tkr left leg... if they wont cut it off which all have said so far they wont i will... i will... this is not living and not having a leg without pain would be living... i cant wait going throuhg one more doc and one more round of tests and then i will somehow someway cut it off myself or at least make it to where someone else will have to cut it off...cant express how bad it is and how much /isery im in every single day as i live in such a horrid place i cant even get pain pills on a livalbe bbasis... im done i cant take it ... no one will help me .. i m fourty four and have aspergers and im serious i will cut it off myself
I had a knee replacement in October. It is almost May and my knee continues to be painful and I can't walk very far.
I had a total knee replacement in September and in April I fall and hurt my knee again.... the ortho is saying nothing is wrong because they found no broken bones. However...I can hardly walk on it without hurting and my whole leg up to my hip is hurting. What should I do.
It seems like metal on metal implants (mostly hips, but now knees as well: http://www.newsinferno.com/defective-medical-devices/stryker-offers-to-settle-doj-otisknee-probe-for-33-million/38430) are the source of most problems. Apparently, the parts rub together inside your body and release ions, which can lead to a bunch of side effects. If you're worried, I would go to the doctor and get a blood ion test and an MRI/MARS. I had a TKR 9 months ago had great experience recovered well great range of motion 130. Then knee was locking and moving around felt like it had lossened, this was confirmed by the Ortho Doctor Bonutti. He wants to blame this on infection, had aspiration tested no infection also has blood test no infection. He now thinks he should do a revision surgery, no thanks!! I shall get a really good malpractice Lawyer, get a second opinion and deal with this all over again when I have time to do all my research. I quess I am really disappointed it's a very hard surgery to recover from but when you put in 150% to recover and the surgeon puts in a meager 50% he needs to wake up!!
after sitting for a little while with knee in a 90 degree angle, it is a painful restriction and difficult to straighten again, with a very audible "click" Have been given remedial exercises, but it does not improve, to the contrary, it is getting worse. it is now 2,5 years since I had complete replacement in left and half in right knees. I have been advised to walk as much as I can, I try the best I can, but no improvements. The best advise I get is, a mathematical answer, that I belong to the 10 % were the operation is not successful. I am in pain, is there a cure ?
