Just read your post today & wanted to know how your spaniel/terrier was going? Our 12 yr old Westie has been diagnosed with Cushings (Pituitary) but he has no physical signs and looks very healthy, he injured his back legs and the Vet was to operate on his Cruciate ligament so he did a pro op blood test, our Westie is extremely anxious at the vet’s and trembles uncontrollably, the Vet phoned us that day to say that the test was abnormal and did another test that came back with elevated ALP & a diagnosis of Cushing’s. I am very uneasy giving him any drugs as he is showing no physical signs, and was thinking of waiting or going to a Natural medication.

Could someone please name the type of medication. My Bella, 8 yrs old Boxer is now on Thyroid meds. Yes, she has Cushings. I don't want to give her the horrible meds for Cushings.

Did you ever get that exact recipe? My poor dog has cushings and needs a better diet?

My Vet told me to boil carrots; I cut them up and boil them and drain them and cut up some more in the bowl; it's easy; I have bought some Kroger's Simple Truth organic veggies: peas, string beans, black beans, anything but corn. I divide a can up for one meal with three dogs. then put Neumann's organic dog food: one can for 3 dogs. It's enough. Mix it up. They love it. Bella has lost 7 lbs already. She had gained a lot of weight from Cushings. I also buy organic hamburger sometimes; brown it and put a can of black beans in it. Some distilled water. They like to lap up the liquid. That's is. Carrots is the most important, says my Vet.

That is a good thing. Does the Vetoryl make the pup sick. How does the Vetoryl make him feel. I am new to this. One med the vet recommended said it could kill Bella. I could not take the chance. Thanks.

May I ask about cushings? Pretty sure this is what my dog has. She’s a 15 year old bischon shitzu. She had a vestibular episode back in March & has since gone down. In the last few days she has gotten so much worse. She drinks a ton, goes out to pee every hour, hour & a half all day & night. She is solely food focused. She doesn’t enjoy anything but eating. Her back end keeps slipping out from under her. When she is down, she struggles to get up. A lot of the time she needs us to lift her. She peed & popped in the house the other day & was laying in it because she couldn’t get up. We came home to her whining about it. Her hair is falling out. I, sadly, have an appointment to put her fur ever to sleep next Thursday. I can’t belive I have to make this decision. She has no quality of life.

We had to put our dog down at the age of 5 just 2 days ago. Has anyone else had a dog that young die from this disease?

My JRT had probably had Cushings a year or more before it was diagnosed and was put on Trilostane for a year but it made little difference to his hunger, thirst and big tummy. As the dose was deemed correct by stim testing and it wasnt showing any tangible physical improvements we felt unable to justify the cost of the drugs and testing. Before the drugs stopped Max began to leave his food for first time and to vomit and couldnt keep tablets down. The vet said if i stop the drugs he will be no worse than he was before the therapy began. We withdrew treatment and then within 3 days he lethargic, could hardly stand and skin loose on his belly. We took him emergency on a Sunday to the same vet who did a blood test and said our pet had just 4 hours to live and had also developed diabetes. It all happened very suddenly and after we stopped Trilostane. We all agreed it we could not afford to go on like this on a pension and it was no life for our dog as he had been so active and fit most of his life. At 8 years old Max was PTS. I remain confused about the whole business of Cushings and wonder if my dog would have been better not having Trilostane as he may have wound down much more gradually without it or even got better naturally?

My Boxer girl, Bella, 8 1/2 yrs young, was diagnosed on August 5. 2017, Vet told me to put her on a diet of carrots, another veggie(s) and meat. I use baked chicken breast. Everything you mentioned as symptoms, Bella has these, too. I decided to put her on Vetoryl. A low dose as do not want her sick. She will die from Cushings, but want some quality. So far, I do not feel the need to put her to sleep. Your dog is more advanced than mine. I don't want Bella to suffer either. It's a day by day thing.

Follow up for Bella: It took me three months to decide to put her on Vetoryl. I was buying formulas to help her symptoms, nothing truly helping. Vet put her on a low dose because a high dose would make her sick and possibly die. This will be the last thing I try. Cushings is fatal. Just making her life livable right now. Day by day. Won't let her suffer. She still is famished. Eats good. I now feed her carrots along with baked chicken and another veggie. She still drinks lots of water and pees often. Wakes up during the night to pee and drink. Vet said let her drink as she would have renal failure if she did not drink the water she needs.

I have not but Bella has Cushings and is 8 1/2, I would like to know how long they have Cushings before diagnosed. I took her to the Vet as soon as she exhibited peeing and drinking lots of water. I thought she had diabetes. But no. Cushings. She is now on Vetoryl and I give her veggies and meat. And a thyroid pill. Just a day by day think. I will not let her suffer, though.

Thank you for sharing all the food and other information. My 15 year old miniature Schnauzer is showing all the symptoms of Cushings according to my vet, but no definite diagnosis yet. I'm going to try the holistic approach first because he has never been good with meds ,
(Usually vomits or loose stools). He has only recently gained the weight, so I am hoping with the right food he will improve. Thanks again for your imput.

I did not, too, put her on Vetoryl right away. Since Bella was gaining weight and her belly hanging down, she is a Boxer and never looked like that, and when I went back to the Vet she did recommend the veggies and meat. She said always some carrots and chicken breast. So this is what I am doing and it is helping. She will not be cured; yet I want her last days comfortable. Boil carrots, (I buy Simple Truth fresh carrots, organic); cut in slices and boil. Drain and try to smash them up in smaller pieces. Also buying canned Simple Truth organic peas, string beans, no potatoes or corn for the starch, and I bake chicken breasts. I have learned to enjoy doing this. Now I feel all three of my pups this way. I will tell you that the Vetoryl, the 60mg size capsule, does not make her sick. Now glad I am doing this. It helps, does not stop, the drinking water, and the panting and the peeing. But somewhat better. So, I did what you say: Holistic. BUT: the 60 mg Vetoryl, I recommend. The higher doses could make the pup sick and or die. So, I now visit the Vet. And told her the 60 mg is fine. Don't want to go higher. She was ok with that. The skin is the last to show the Cushings and she is having dark areas and her skin peeling but not raw. She is showing this symtpom now.
HOpe this helps.
