That's a nice boot. Mine was very different because I can't walk with it. It's a moulded cast which is removable and I feel very secure when I wear it. I could rest on my back sole when I am sitting or standing.
I got to wear it during my 2nd month after surgery and of course I need the crutches. On the 3rd month I put away the cast and was on partial weight with the crutches. After the 12 weeks from surgery, I had physical therapy and it helps a lot.
Musictch, I'm already 6 weeks post surgery but my foot is still quite sore - the same kind of feeling with my 1st surgery though it will take shorter time this round to heal. Good luck to you on your next surgery.

rtftbrk - How's it going walking in boot? I've been picking up useage over last week. I got in the pool this am and swam some laps. I got my next appointment on 23 April and hope to get ok to walk in shoe with insert. Hardware removal is scheduled for 13 May. GGB
I had surgery for a lisfranc injury in July...went thought the whole process...the pins, non weight bearing, crutches, boot and have been able to walk unassisted for about 5 months now. My Dr says I healed exceptionally well, being that my injury was one of the worst he has seen in lis franc injuries. I am released for medical care now. I always have some discomfort in my foot, but some days it isn't too bad, and I can walk and function almost normally. Other days, it hurts so bad to walk and I have to walk on the side of my foot to prevent pain. The change has been that being that it is nicer weather, I have been outside more, walking, and just doing stuff. My foot has also remained pretty swollen, which the Dr said is normal, but when will that go away? Any advice is appreciated.
ggb, great idea, swimming sounds like a smart way to get exercise.
Well it's amazing how much you can get done when you're not on crutches. Walking with the boot for a week and a half now and it's been OK. But a couple of days ago I had to spend the day standing for work and at the end of the day, and the next day, it felt pretty sore and harder to walk on. But with a compression sock and if I pump the boot up for a snug fit, it really is pretty good. I take it easy on stairs, and because the boot is so rigid, and so high with the orthotic insert I got ($175 ouch) it's pretty easy to walk around, kerthumping around the house.
10 more days and the boot comes off. I'm really curious if I'll be able to take showers standing up at that point, or if I will still need to wear a shoe with orthotic whenever I'm standing.
One thing I've noticed is that in the morning now, after sleeping with the foot up on pillows, my foot almost looks normal. Still discolored but hardly any swelling around the toes. At night though it's back to the swollen foot. Still, signs of progress!

rtftbrk - I go back to ortho this wed. I'm hoping to start walking in shoes with insert. I have some pain during first steps in am. Foot swelling has gone down. I can tell big difference over last 10 days in re-gaining strength in ankle / knee. ggb
I fractured my foot on valentines night and have been off work for going on 9 wks. 2 weeks ago the took me out of the ugly blue boot and fit me in a boot called the AIRCAST. Its the best thing that has ever happened since my accident. I walk without crutches and drive. Cant wait to get back to work... I hope this helps you out for those who are curios... kellie
Good morning all! I'm new here, but happy to find this site!! I'm having a cat scan of my foot & ankle this morning to verify a lisfranc fracture (right foot). The only thing I remember having happen is a full peanut butter jar fell from the 2nd shelf of my cupboard and landed on the top of my bare foot. It hurt bad but felt better in a few days. Then, a few weeks later, I started having horrible pain when I stepped on the ball of my foot. If I trip over something and land of the ball of the foot, I could scream at the top of my lungs it hurts so bad!! :'( The first x-ray was read as normal. I was referred to a podiatrist and she had more films taken. She showed me the gap between the first and second metatarsals and is suspicious of a lisfranc fracture. That's the reason for my cat scan; to verify it. I'm terrified of the diagnosis after reading about it online. I have a couple of questions. How long until you can drive after surgery, or even if casted with a non-weight bearing cast, can you drive? Also, I work in an office and am wondering how long any of you have been off work with this injury. My employer has an extremely low tolerance for lost time from work, and I've only been there since this past October. I love my job and my manager says she's extremely happy with me and my work, but I know they don't tolerate lost time for anyone. I do have short-term disability, but I don't qualify for FMLA yet. I have to be there at least a year for that. So, can anyone tell me how long you can't drive and how long you were off work? I'm so scared and just need some comfort. I so much appreciate anything you can tell me! Thank you so much, and I wish you all the best in your healing!!!
Hi, I am so happy to have found this site! While on vacation at Walt Disney World in January 2008 I slipped on wet concrete and my right foot went directly under me and bent backwards. Disney, while they were really nice and caring at the beginning, have not claimed it as a no fault case.
Anyway, after I went to Celebration Hospital in Orlando my foot was so swollen that they could not tell if it was fractured. Put me in a boot and told me to stay off of it, see someone when I get home to Illinois. Three days later loaded up in our van and husband drove home. Went right to Orthopedic who said it was a Lisfranc Fracture, Cast for 6 weeks, now Cam Walker boot, for what is going on an additional 8 weeks. The Dr. opted not to do surgery as I have a protein S and am on blood thinners. I see the Dr. this week and hoping to get this Cam Walker off, but I am not counting on it. I have pain in the arch of the foot and the outside of it every so often! Does anyone else have prolong problems with this? I am only 42 and hate to think that I will have pain forever! I kid when I say I tripped over the Rats tail, but the way Disney is treating this maybe I should not kid anymore! This thing hurts!

chlobert - I've been driving for over two months using left foot. I go back to dr tomorrow and hope to finally get out of boot...at this point, I may have problem driving with right foot again. ggb
chlobert, i haven't been able to drive yet since my surgery (going on over 4 months now and i'm dying to drive), but i alway drive a stick so i can't just use my left foot. i'm currently finishing up my senior year of college, and i know it's not that same as work, but i had my surgery on a thursday and returned to school on a weds. it was a pain being on crutches for 6 weeks no weight bearing but i got passed it. i don't know what your work entails but if your able to be in the office on crutches i'm sure you could return back as soon as you felt up to it...
i hope everyone is healing well! i was at the doctor three weeks ago and starting last thursday i was able to walk on my foot without the boot! every exciting...however, i am in a ton of pain which is odd because i haven't really had any since the first few days after my surgery. it's mostly under the ball of my foot and i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it goes away. i was hoping that it's just from not being used to walking on my foot and using those muscles or some bruising coming to the surface? i'd be very disappointed if i went through all this and i'm still in so much pain that it is very difficult to get around.
best wishes

After 3 months on crutches and 2 weeks walking in boot, I finally got ok from dr. to walk in shoes. He gave me inserts with rigid arch support. I've been walking slow but not too much pain. I got some padded socks from local foot store which seem to help (thorlos). My hardware removal is in a couple of weeks and expect to be in boot again for 1 week following surgery. Dr. wants me to start PT following that to work up to running again. He said to expect to wear an arch support insert forever... GGB
Heading in for my second post op appointment on Friday... I think I'm due to have both my pins and stitches removed. This will mark the 6th week since the injury. I'm hoping I will get out of this cast and into a boot by then, but it might be too soon (?)...
I am astonished at the amount of strength lost in my injured leg. I can lift 85 lbs with my good quad, previously I could do about 100. But on my injured leg I can only lift 25 (!) pounds. The amount of strength you lose is just obscene.

Good morning all! I had my cat scan on Monday and my appointment yesterday. The results said "no evidence of fracture or dislocation, small accessory navicular bone". My Dr wanted to treat me like there is a fracture since I can't get an MRI (I have a spinal cord stimulator for neck & arm pain). She wanted to cast me and pull me off work for 6 weeks. I told her I couldn't do that because I would guaranteed lose my job. As my first post stated, I've only been there 6 months and even though my manager says she's extremely happy with my work, their loss of time rules are horrendous! So, I ended up with an air cast to wear at all times except while driving, in bed, and of course, while showering. I was amazed that when the tech put the air cast on, I could put weight on the ball of my foot! That's the first time I've been able to do that in over 5 weeks! We're starting with conservative treatment, with hopes that I won't do any permanent damage by walking in it. I have been reading a lot online about lis franc fractures, and it seems like that has to be what this is, but for some reason, it didn't show up on the cat scan. The x-ray did show the space between the first and second metatarsal bones, and the Dr thought that's what it was. Now I probably won't know what is actually wrong since I can't get the MRI. I just hope the air cast will help heal it. I'm going to try to stay off the foot as much as possible and hope that this will do it. I just don't want to end up with permanent damage to my foot and end up with a major surgery. Has anyone out there gotten treatment with an air cast and did it work for you? Thanks again for reading my posts, and I hope all of you are healing well! Chlobert
On November 17, 2007, I sustained a lisfranc fracture/dislocation after falling down the stairs. Because I was pregnant at the time, and because the diastasis was not extreme, I was not a candidate for ORIF. I was treated with a cam walker boot, post op shoe, and orthotics.
After I delivered my son in Feb., the doctor looked at my x-rays and said ORIF was not an option for this old of an injury (four months) and that we might consider joint fusion at some point in the fusion, but prescribed physical therapy in the meantime.
Now, almost six months after my injury, I am having a resurgence of pain. At first I thought it might just be the PT...exercising the foot and joint after not having used it for so long. But I don't think that adequately explains my pain.
For one thing, I have pain across the top of my foot, in the same place (though not with the same intensity) that I had when I initially broke my foot. Second, sometimes I get a tingling sensation down my big toe. Third, I have pain on the underside of my foot, sometimes on the medial side and sometimes on the lateral side. Fourth, I CANNOT get up on my tippy toes and still walk with a subtle limp.
Do I just wait this out? Am I developing osteoarthritis? What does osteoarthritis feel like? Or is it just that the joint is not healing? What is going on? Does anyone have a similar experience?
Oh, and I have a bulbous swelling on the medial side of my foot that no one seems to adequately explain to me. Is that swelling normal? It's somewhat disfiguring.

I drove with my left foot for 3 weeks and did fine. At first I drove slowly then I got to be able to do it quite well. I was always very careful and I only drove no more then 5 mins away. to work from work!
