Hello everyone. I had my surgery today to have the screw removed. I am doing surprisingly well. My foot is throbbing a bit, but nothing unbearable. I was told I could try to put weight on my foot, but I think I may wait until tomorrow. I want to know the pain I experience is due to the actual injury, and not just post op pain. I will let you all know how it goes. Also, I spoke with my doctor before surgery, and he seemed to think that I would be down to one crutch, and maybe even using a cane within one week. I will then begin therapy. That gave me alot of hope. I don't mind walking with a limp, but I would love to have access to at least one arm while walking around. So, all in all, I would say this second surgery has been a pretty good experience.

With regards to the therapy issues, I am going to be sure to watch my therapist closely. I think I want to start with marbles rather than machines as well. I can't see how I could possibly be ready for any machines at this point either.

Talk to everyone soon.
Glad that you are doing okay. I had my third day of therapy today. I am really sore after each time. However, I explained to my therapist that I thought it was too much and he had me exercise my foot for only 45 minutes instead of an hour and a half today. He had me do an exercise bike, pushing off with the ball of my foot...the machine he has me regularly do, and then walk on the treadmill. The treadmill was hard...he kept telling me to walk heel to toe, instead of just limping on part of my foot. I could only do like 6 minutes. I am able to walk unassisted though now, so he must be doing something right. I limp around, but atleast I don't have to use a wheelchair or crutches.
Hello everyone!!
I had my surgery on Monday and it went surprisingly well. I only had to have 3 screws instead of the original series of screws wires and pins. I am so thrilled. I am still in alot of pain but nothing like I thought I would be. The crutches are so hard to get used to but I think I am doing alright. I still cant do stairs but I guess that will eventually come around.
As it stands right now I go to the doctor on Halloween to get a hard cast put on. Then a month of no weight baring then into a walking boot. He said the screws would have to stay in for atleast 3-6 months. So probably still nonweight bearing for a while. But that will be alright with the help of my family. My husband is such a help. He is my rock and I really dont know what I would do without him. So far the boys arent a whole lot of help. I hope that will change. I guess with daddy home for this week they dont see a need in it. They will get drinks for me and help me all they can that way. But I really need them to help with some of the work that needs done. I think they will because I like to think I raised them better than that. I guess its partly my fault.. I kinda spoiled them.. that has been my job and I am good at it! :-D
Well I hope everyone is doing well.. Musictch I am glad to hear that your fall didnt set you back. I was worried when I read that. And where is Hizgrace?? Tells us about a new baby then she's gone. Guess she is celebrating!!

Thats good that you are doing okay. I had PT today. Question for everyone who is walking...When I don't walk for awhile, and then get up, it hurts sooo much to even stand, and more so to walk. It weird that like in a matter of 15 minutes of non use, my foot gets sooo stiff.
Hi All,

I am still following this site - have done for several months. I have posted only a couple of times. Like the previous post from 'guest', I too experienced a crush/lisfranc injury. Had surgery 3 weeks after injury due to swelling, 15 screws and 2 plates were removed 3 months ago (6 months after injury). I am back at work (concreting). My foot still hurts every day, however I was told that this will take 12 - 18 months to recover from - pain free. I hope this is the case. Surgeon was very happy with results and healing when he removed the hardware.

Most of the flexability is back in my foot (forefoot and midfoot), but I get muscle/soft tissue pain from just in front of my ankle to my midfoot area. I had only slight separation between 2nd metatarsal / 1st cuneiform joint, fractured 3rd metatarsal and chipped 1st cuneiform. Unstable 2nd and 3rd metatarsal cuneiform joints, very slight separation (1 mm).

I am interested to hear the rehab that 'guest' did to achieve such good results. Could you please elaborate? It is hard to post email addresses as they are removed by the moderator

Thanks for your time..
Hello,

I am 13 weeks post surgery and just got my walking boot off. I am having some difficulty walking I am hoping this is because I haven’t used my calf muscles in awhile. Did anyone else have trouble walking after their boot was removed? Also what exercises can I do to strengthen my foot and calf? Thanks for the replies.
I have been without the boot for 2 weeks now. I still can't walk a lot at once, and when I do, I limp considerably. I am seeing a physical therapist three times a week. I didn't think the healing process would be quite this slow...but my doctor says I will not be able to walk without a limp for a couple months.
Good morning, Anthony.

I am not a doctor or a therapist, but I cn tell you how my therapy started out and how things were going before I re-injured my foot. First off, I didn't re-injure as a result of ny of the following.

There are things that I did everyday beginning with the first day of my therapy. Find a board with a smooth top (no chance of splinters) and put it on the floor in front of you (you sit in a chair). Put a towel with the loop side up over the board. With your heel resting on the floor and toes on the board, use your toes to scrunch the towel toward you by grabbing and dragging it. Then after about 10-15 reps, do the opposite -- curl your toes, grasping the towel with them and push those bonoxious wrinkles away from you. After several reps of those, try using your foot like a windshield wiper on the towel. Get some marbles and put them in a small, round bowl or plastic container for storage. Put these out on the towel and use your toes to grasp them and put them back into the container. As you practice these, you'll find your muscles building up. Lying down, use a karate belt or anything else you have to pull your injured foot up. Get a good stretch and hold it for about 20 sec. building the time up to 30. Then gently lower your leg and do it again, repeating 5-10 times. These sound simple, but they helped me get back on my feet and into regular shoes. As you do these, other activities can be added, but should be done so by a therapist. I thought I could do some things on my own, but found that my therapist didn't think I was ready, and it turned out that I wasn't. If you haven't had any therapy, see if you can get some. Mine was invaluable! Let us know how you're doing.
Thank you for the replies. My doctor didn't recommend any type of physical therapy just orthopedic shoe inserts. I am going to use some of those exercises you recommended. I appreciate all the help. One good thing is my foot doesn't hurt when I walk on it I think it is more my calf that is giving me the problem. It doesn't want to bend since the boot was on for so long. I am going into this optimistic and want to do everything right. I'll post my progress.
My Dr didn't recommend it on his own either. When I asked about it the first time, he said I didn't need it. I asked about it again and he said "if you want to", and wrote a note to the physical therapist. If you don't need it, thats great, but if you think it could help, ask your Dr if you can just go a time or two to get introduced to exercises...
I am 12 weeks post surgery, able to weight bear 2 weeks ago when I got pins out, started physical therapy a week and half ago. They work me pretty hard in therapy, as I had posted before....well after therapy today, about an hour later, I noticed bruising on my foot where the injury was...just straight accross on all those joints. Is this a normal part of the healing process, or is it indicative or working too hard? Should I bring it to the therapists attention, or call my Dr.?? Just wondering if it is normal.
Hello everyone. I hope everyone is doing great in their recoveries. I have a question or two that I hope someone can help with. First, I got my hard cast put on Oct. 31, and I am having horrible pain at night. It's like my whole foot goes into a cramp or spasm. It jerks me awake and I cant help screaming in pain. Has anyone else had this happen and if so what if anything helps? Now on to the second question... my big toe is numb. This is the area that has the screws in it. The rest of my foot is fine as far as the feeling goes. But its like the big toe is asleep all the time. Is this normal or is it something I should call my doctor about? It wasnt like this until the hard cast was put on. It kinda worries me but I am a worrier by nature. I guess as far as this injury goes nothing is really normal.

Hey everyone. I've been reading this board for a while but I haven't posted yet. plan on hearing more from me in the next couple months.

My story is pretty simple. In early July I did a backflip on a trampoline and I landed with all my body weight on my foot so it bent in half. They missed it originally in the ER. When I got back to school I still couldn't run, so I went to a specialist who ordered an MRI. They found a 2mm separation between the 1st ad 2nd MT. They're planning on an ORIF, but since it's been a while and she's not sure how much the bones can be moved, she might need to fuse them.

Anyway, I'll be around every now and then after my surgery on the 14th. I hope everyone else is doing well in their recovery!
Well, I got the screw out of my foot on 10/25. I was surprised at how much pain I had when I first started to put weight on my foot again after 4 months, but it's getting slightly better. I start my therapy on Thursday, so I'm hoping the exercises will help to build more muscle. I still have bruising from the surgery, but hopefully it will go away soon. I just can't believe how quickly the muscles deteriorate, and leave you with no ability to walk on your own. I am getting by ok on both crutches, but once I go down to one, I find it very painful, and I have to limp alot. At this point, it seems healthier to keep using both crutches until I get more strength.

With regards to pain at night and toe numbness...I never really had any severe pain at night. The thing I found to be uncomfortable was wearing the brace at night since my foot was in a right angle position, but it was manageable with medication. I also didn't have as much pain as many others post surgery though, so maybe my situation was unique. I would imagine your foot will be more comfortable once the cast comes off though. With regards to the toe numbness, I experienced some of that, but yours seems worse than mine. If you have concerns, I would check with your doctor....I'm sure it's fine, but it would probably make you feel better. I can tell you that when I touched the top of my toes after my first surgery, it just didn't feel like I had the same sensation as I did before. Once I was able to put my foot in water again though, and the excess skin came off, I noticed the sensation in my toes seemed more normal again. I think the extra layers of skin really affected the degree of sensitivity I had. And just a heads up on that....I don't know if anyone else had this issue, but my skin was in really bad shape once I got my cast off....It was VERY dry, and it wasn't peeling off naturally because so many layers of excess skin had built up on the bottom of my foot especially. I was told I couldn't put it in water or use lotion for several days, but once I finally did submerge it in water, all of the excess skin just sort of flaked off. My entire bathtub was filled with flakes of skin. It was like a horror film. My foot looked and felt great once it all came off, but it was just disgusting. Just wanted to make you aware that this might happen to you as well.

Good luck with everything!
Oh yes! My foot was so dry and it looked so gross...finally, after getting the okay to put lotion on it, it now is normal in that respect. Took three weeks though! But yeah, I can relate to dryness and flakiness and extra skin!!
