I used to have tonsilitis 12 times a year as a kid.
I had something just like mono (gandular) at the end of high school, but all tests came back negative. I too couldn't swallow for weeks, had fever, etc.
I have had fatigue since then.
The last three years my tonsils have been permanently swollen. I thought it was due to some naty wisdom teeth, but I've had them out, and thought the tonsils calmed down a little, they're still big.
I got homeopathy last year, and it REALLY helped. I was read to quit school because of the bad breath I had from the halitosis-smelling pus-stuff in my tonsils. I'd squeeze them out, and the smell was horrific. I'd taken anti-biotics which only helped so much. THe homeopathy took away that stiinky pus-ness and improved my health.
But my biggest problem now is I can't sing, and haven't been able to for years. WHen I do, I get pain in my throat--and I was meant to become a singer.
I'm finally getting to the top of the wait list to see about getting my tonsils out, but friends are saying getting the tonsils out is a bad move, that their swelling is a symptom, not a cause,a nd my body will suffer without them. One friend has recommended I remove all mucus-causing foods, and try a raw food diet.
I'm going to do it, but a hybrid diet. I'm not going to cut out all meat and cooked foods, but I'll eat mostly uncooked fruit and veg.
I hope it helps. There were complications from my wisdom teeth removal, nerves have been damaged and I have numbness throughout my mouth, so I'm cautious about getting any more surgery.
I urge you all to do as much research as possible, try cutting out dairy (my tonsils flare when I eat chocolate or cheese), keep neck warm, gargle warm sea-salt water, and I hope we all find out what's wrong with us so we can start living our lives properly again![/quote

nothing will happen to your body. i swear im getting mine taken out tomorrow hopefully. i love to sing to but my voice is a little crackily. your friends are wrong my friend is in chorus and she had hers taken out along time ago. shes sings great.so dont worry

I am having the same symptoms. I have had a lump on the right side of my throat for over 2 months. Been tested and retested for strep and mono. I have the white spots in my throat and also holes when the white is gone. I am tired non stop. I changed doctors and this doctor took oone look at my throat and said it is not mono or strep (coulda saved me several hundred dollars). He sent me to an ENT. The ENT took one look at my throat and told me that it is a bacteria that does not respond to antibiotics. It causes all of my symptoms and that the only way to get rid of it is to have a tonsilectomy. I have been miserable for so long that I am having it done. I'm not even worried a bout the pain for 2+weeks as I heal because I know that once everyone is said and done, I will feel so much better. If you google swollen tonsils and exhaustion or something along those lines, all the results say that if you do not seek medical help that it will travel down to your kidneys and other body parts. A month ago I started feeling a pain in my lower abdomen. Not sure what it is and my gyno ran all kinds of tests and an ultrasound and found nothing so after I have the tonsillectomy I will see if this goes away. If it does then it was related to my throat. Don't wait to be checked out!!

Don't over-worry yourself^ It is scary but as I have found out it is'nt life threatening. Every time I get a sore-throat it is almost certain within a couple days my tonsils will swell up, white spots will cover them and those two nerve feeling things (under jaw bone on each side) knott up really hard and hurt really bad. I also get a fever, I will get a constant headache for days at a time and be extremely fatigued and tired. I scrinch my face every time I swallow.

I also get tonsil stones, it scared the c**p out of me when I first discovered this last year, my throat had been swollen to the point when I would sleep I would snore, but out of exhaustion I would not wake up leading to that bell in the back of my throat getting so swollen one morning I could almost swallow it.

I ate a lot of ice and limited myself to eating food, I went to the doctor and got perscribed a really good anti biotic in a yellow box (don't remember the name) after 3-4 days it seemed better but my tonsils were still swollen. I ended up buying a sprite from a soda machine in a can which was extremely fizzy. I was shocked within 10-15 minutes my tonsils were back to normal. I don't know if this was coincidence of the anti biotics finally kicking or did the carbonation have that much of an impact on the back of my throat.

The swollen tonsils, white spots, and chronic fatigue could be caused by mononucleosis. If mono isn't treated correctly, it doesn't go away. I had mono a couple years ago and had all these symptoms. I was on bed rest for three weeks before I got the okay to go back to work.

People, there are usually two things that cause the white patches, fever and exhaustion. One is strep throat. The other is mononucleosis, which is also called glandular fever. Your doctor will have to do throat culture/tests to see which one it is.

Strep throat is caused a bacteria, responds to antibiotics and should be treated to prevent complications like scarlet fever, and also to help you feel better faster. Mononucleosis is a virus and so, can't be treated with antibiotics. It can linger on and keep coming back, making you exhausted and causing fever and white patches on your throat for months and even recur on and off for years. (My son even had BOTH strep throat AND Mono at the same time, according to his doctor).

For either condition, they can cause your tonsils to become swollen permanently and have holes like swiss cheese from the infection. (Mine are.) The holes trap food and can cause chronic bad breath. You have to use a Q tip (or water pik, i suppose) to remove these, maybe every two weeks or so. You just gently but firmly push the Q tip against the side of the tonsil, next to the hole, and it should come out. You may have to do it a couple of times. Make sure you don't smash the tonsil stones or "throat cheese" that comes out, because it is extremely disgusting smelling. Gross, but MUCH better to have it OUT of your body so your breath doesn't smell like that stuff!!

The only cure for these constant recurring tonsil problems is a tonsillectomy, where doctors remove your tonsils. The problem is, it isn't the common-place mild surgery that used to be popular in the 60s and 70s for young kids (Think Brady Bunch: Cindy got to eat lots of ice cream!) The reality is, even though they are just removing a small amount of non-essential tissue in your throat, it is a major surgery for anyone except perhaps small children. You will be ON YOUR BACK for minimum two weeks. It is really tough on you. It will help get rid of these problems, but it is a big decision for teens and adults to have this surgery.

Best wishes, and talk to your doctor. Ask him about what is going on with you. Tell him what you think, and why you are scared. Sometimes it takes a couple of visits to assess the situation accurately, rule things out, and get to know how your body works, and what needs to be done. If you have visited your doctor, and things aren't better, call the office and tell the nurse. They will help you know what to do.

Ive had a beet red throat for the past 3 almost 4 years. I noticed it started right after some flu-like symptoms. Those white puss patches you are all describing I also got them. I saw a Doctor and he said it was nothing and gave me ibuprofen. The red throat continued so I went to see another doctor. He tested for strep and who knows what and nothing. Some of you here are suggesting it might be mono. I immediately made an appointment and will see the doctor tomorrow. I've also noticed that when I rest well and I am stress free it almost but not quite goes into remission. But when I'm stressed, worried, tired, etc it comes back with full vengeance

I noticed a slight sore throat the other day, and after watching for a few days have since noticed swelling in my right tonsil and white spots. My mother and grandmother have had tonsil stones off-and-on for years, but I'm not sure if it's ever isolated to just one side. My right ear has also felt funny, I can feel pressure in it when I swallow. Again, everything is only slightly sore. It's not even as bad as a typical sore throat. I do have chronic sinus/allergy problems, and frequent respiratory issues. I had bronchitis and did 20 days of antibiotics and a corticosteroid back in February. Right now my nose is runny and I've got mild congestion in my chest, as well as slightly itchy/burning eyes and I've blown a little blood from my right nostril. I'm hoping it's just irritation from a sinus drainage. I'm going to the doctor today, actually.

I do realize that this is rehashing an old thread.  However, I used to get strep very frequently as a kid and know very well how it feels/looks.  So later in my 20s when I got the familiar pain and white spots/splotches on my tonsils I went to the doctor thinking it was my old friend, strep.  I got a prescription of antibiotics.  After the full prescription was taken the pain was still constant, now it spread to both tonsils, not just the one.  Went back to the doctor and was given another antibiotic... same thing, not even a reduction in pain.  At this point it had been nearly 3 weeks and I was almost bedridden with pain and gargling any otc liquid medication with a numbing/pain reducing agent *note: gargling only* along with normal doses of advil to at least cope.  I had finally had enough and scheduled another appointment, and after a bunch of going back and forth, the resulting prescription floored me: Diflucan.  It was a yeast/fungal throat infection that created the same pain and look as strep.  About a week into the Diflucan and the pain started to subside and after the complete run, it was completely gone.  Oh, and for those that will make the obvious comments, I wasn't sexually active until 3 years after this issue :)

When running into sinus/throat pain/issues always discuss the possibility of a possible yeast/fungal infection as that is a very large cause that many doctors do not know about *still*.

I had something similar happen to me, and the doctors kept putting me on antibiotics and testing me for strep and mono multiple times. After 3 months of my throat not recovering I was sent to a ear, nose, and throat specialist.  After being tested, the diagnosed me with a staph infection in my throat (which is a skin infection and is not normally found in the throat).  The anitbiotics plus steriods got rid of the infection (in which the white spots disappeared), and over the following three weeks the swelling went down (it will take longer for them to become uninflamed because they have been stressed for so long, so don't panick if it takes a while).
