Wanted to provide some hope to those that are coming here after having just had a tonsillectomy. I had mine in early November -- came home to a fridge stocked with sherbet only to find that anything sweet tasted instead what I can only described as rotten metal (if metal could rot and had taste). It took over a month before I could eat anything sweet and two months before everything was fine-- but in early January my sweet tooth did eventually return (for better or worse). Vowed that I would return here to post if things got better as I was not real happy after seeing so many posts of people that never got better. So remember to come back and post good news too.

What was the time span between when you did not taste and started to taste again? How long did you take zinc for?

OMG! I just had this surgery and I don't have the sense of taste either. I called the doctor and he couldn't explain it and told me that it should return eventually...keep trying....you give me absolutely no hope. I truly hope things get better for you. I stay nauseated and can't eat but two bites of anything. This is far more worse than dealing with prior issues. This is not good.

I had my tonsils removed May 2016 and my taste has gone. Using smell to convince myself of what I'm eating is the only way I can survive. I need to eat hot spicy food to get anything from food. Getting to the point of not wanting to eat. I also have Globes where it feels as if something is lodged in my throat. It is all horrendous. I hope your doctors are better than mine ...fingers crossed you get some back in time x

Ruder,, I am so sorry to hear of this for you. It is absolutely life changing!!!! To say the least! Hang in there try different foods maybe something will trigger a good feeling,, that is what I have been doing,, some days it seems to be coming back ever so slightly and other days are a total disaster and nothing helps,, but I am making it! Have you tried the zinc therapy, or anything else? Have you ever had the the metal or metallic taste in your mouth?
This happened to me in Jan 2017 I went in for a "routine tonsillectomy" " we do these all of the time". I thought I had an issue before.. also had issues with the globus sensation I notice if I am really anxious it comes on, I have been meditating to help with that! Hang in there x

For the bad taste, try zinc. It takes a while but keep taking it until the taste disappears.

Ruder,
I have had Globes also, plus pain and a weird sensation in my left ear. Plus, I cant taste anything except sweet comes thru slightly. I thought my cooking got really bad. I didnt realize it was from the tonsillectomy until a few days ago when I was complaining that my spaghetti sauce had no taste, but my family said it tasted the same as always. It hit me, that my ENT doc said it was a rare but possible side effect. I feel bad for the people around me. I had my surgery November 2016 and have been complaining that the food at restaurants, friends houses, and my own cooking has basically sucked not realizing I lost my sense of taste.

Do you do operations to remove tonsils. I am shocked.

Just had my tonsils and uvala removed to help sleep apnea now 40 past the surgery I still can't taste food every time I see the doctor he says that happens to some patients and say's it will go back to normal soon and quickly changes the conversation.I am starting to get fed up I am eating alot foods I shouldn't just to get a little taste out of them but don't want to gain weight or increase blood pressure with all the salt I've been consuming. I am thinking to go see another Ent and make sure things where done right i am really starting to worry I won't be able to taste food like I used to anymore. ...

Hi everyone, I had come here seeking answers months ago when I had my tonsillectomy and realized on about day 10 I could not taste.. it's been 5 months and it seems to be very slowly coming back there is no rapid fix for this. Time is all I can say and even months most food is bland or I can taste one particular ingredient. I have found that fresh foods are the best veggies and fruit. It has been a super long process and I still get aggravated when someone is talking about how good the food is. I've come a long way since January but I still have moments when I get upset about this. Stay strong keep a positive mindset all I can say from my experience is it will get better just very slow very very! Hang in there I am hoping once I get to the one year which will be Jan 26, 2018,, I will be posting that my taste is back! Fingers crossed!
