Months. I had zero taste after the surgery. I tried different things like the zinc pills. The doctor made me feel crazy when I told him my sense of taste was gone. I really didn't want to eat either so I figured it would at least help my appetite and lucky enough my sense of taste came back too.
The swallowing gets better your throat muscles are learning to compensate for the new shape of your throat and the extra space. I am 4 weeks post op and still have to drink after each bite of food to get everything down. I am having s very hard time with taste also I hope that improves as well.
So it's not in my head, just had my tonsils out in January and nothing tastes good anymore, not even chocolate wondered if that was what is was from and I believe that it is, thanks for the insight
I had my tonsils out 5 weeks ago and for the first 3, everything tasted horrible. I could taste at the tip of my tongue but as the food passed to the back of my throat, the taste changed. Apparently the tastebud nerve can get caught up with doing the tonsillectomy. Fortunately for me, it has improved over time. I am now able to taste most things although all bread and pastry as well as potato still tastes horrible. From reading some of the below, I am lucky to be getting my taste buds back at all! The surgeon said it will take time to come back but I really do feel for those who are still having problems with their taste. I also had a horrible foul taste in my mouth, particularly when I woke but I don't have that horrible taste in my mouth anymore either. My stitches have taken 5 weeks to dissolve, I still have them now but they are looking like they are ready to go. Hang in there, it hopefully will get better. This is not something the surgeon said could happen otherwise I may have rethought about having the op. Losing your taste and having it replaced with a rancid flavour is absolutely horrible. Good thing is I lost 7kgs but what a hell of a way to go about it. Good luck everyone.
I totally feel like you described my symptoms. I had tonsillectomy 10/05/15 and on day 9 I got hemorrhage and had to go back for cauterization. It was the worst experience of my life. Worst part, I had food and fluids go up my nasal canal through the palate and sometimes I would have fluid flow through my nose(Awful).
Now, am constantly sucking on candies even though I cannot taste them. My throat is always dry causing me to drink constantly.
Please tell me you were able to get your taste back and that the bad taste is gone.
Thank you.

It's disappointing for me to say I have almost hit the one year mark for my taste loss. Yesterday I had some mulled cider and noticed it was too sweet. This made me think since I usually cannot taste anything sweet. It's not that I can taste the flavor, I can just tell. It's almost like my tongue can't taste flavor but I can when I swallow. I also think I can taste more with the sides of my tongue. This realization gave me hope because a year ago I would not have even been able to tell if something was too sweet, let alone sweet at all. Hopefully if someone is reading this who just lost there taste, there is hope because I believe mine is coming back but slowly.
Did your taste came back? Please help me and answer this question. I lost my taste two months ago after tonsillectomy. A weird sweet taste is always in my mouth
I am going on 5 months and still have no taste and I have a weird taste in my mouth almost constant and I feel like I'm choking. I'd love to know how people recovered. Did things go back to normal little by little or one day they woke up normal?
Had my tonsilectemy Dec 07,2015 and my taste buds are not totally gone but samn near gone. I can taste the firat bite then I have to take a sip of water to start all over again like its my first bite...now the sweet taste is going and that was one thing I could taste...Im getring depressed rhat I am srill experiencing the same issue that caused me to get the surgery in the first place.I feel food getting caughy in my throat...Im noe thinking it is an issue with my tongue all together....Im going in for my post op in a week Im also going to seek legal advice because I was not told I could loss my sensenof taste...Im so sad I gor this horrible surgery in the first place

hi!
glad I stayed subscribed to this thread after so many years.
i did so because i was so terrified at first, that i wanted to be able to reassure people who were in the same scary situation!
YES, 100% all complications are resolved for me.
don't worry too much, just try to keep healthy, clean nutrients from whole foods in your diet, make sure you get proper rest, and ESPECIALLY don't stress.
stress is the worst for healing quickly, so just... as much as it's understandable to be worried, it's worth practicing some positive thinking!
feel free to ask anything, any time
