I have Celiac Disease and vaporizing marijuana eases my stomach ailments as well, this was recommended by gastroenterologist.  It also stimulates my appetite which I often don't feel like eating (any way to get some calories in).

Okay so I've read through this entire thread and have read multiple studies and articles pertaining to marijuana and stomach problems. I'm going to share my experiences and what I've noticed so maybe people can alleviate their symptoms. I'm 22 years old, 6 feet tall, 190 pounds, and I played soccer my entire life until I developed arthritis in my hip at 19. About 2 and a half years ago I began smoking weed in order to help with my arthritis pain and it worked well. About 9 months ago I started smoking daily and about 5 months ago I started smoking multiple times a day. I wouldn't say I'm a "chronic" smoker but definitely more than normal. An eighth could last me a week or two. I also work out about 6 days a week and I have a healthy diet. I don't have much of an appetite unless I smoke weed. I can still eat when I'm not high but nearly as much as I need to. So about 2 weeks ago my roommate and I decided to get really high and just watch sports and eat pizza. Throughout the day I ended up eating 2 pizzas while continuously smoking. Needless to say I was extremely nauseous the next day with bloating, constipation, diarrhea, but no vomiting. These pains proceeded to last about 3-4 days with weed being my only source of pain relief. I got better and thought nothing of it. A few days ago I went out and had a few beers and that night and the next morning I developed the same stomach issues. What do pizza & beer have in common? They both have gluten in them. I thought okay I may have a gluten intolerance, so I cut out gluten in my diet (I also cut lactose out to see if that helped). Then a couple days ago I smoked before bed and ate eggs, ground turkey, spinach, and avocado (no gluten or lactose but avocado is high in fat so could be affecting gastritis) and woke up with extreme stomach pains. Bloating, constipation, diarrhea, etc, but again no vomiting. So here are the conclusions I've drawn so far: 1. Unless you have cyclical vomiting you most likely don't have Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome. Hyperemesis in itself means intense vomiting. 2. Fix your diet. If you consistently get stomach aches after eating dairy, bread, pasta, etc you may have a gluten allergy, Celiac disease, or even lactose intolerance. Eat non acidic fruits and vegetables, lean meat, eggs, nuts, beans, rice, etc. 3. Don't smoke right before you go to bed. Smoke an hour or two before and don't eat anything too heavy. Since weed slows down your digestion all that food gets poorly digested while you sleep so you wake up with cramps & diarrhea. 4. If problems persist 2 weeks after fixing your diet you may have an H Pylori infection. The infection highly contagious and can cause stomach ulcers or gastritis. Anxiety & stress only heightens the pain of ulcers so the weed could be triggering anxiety pains. Ask your doctor to test you for the infection as well as ulcers or gastritis. Most treatments are effective within 2 weeks. I'm going to the doctor to get tested for the infection myself so I'll report back when I get my results. If you really want to see some relief cut out gluten, dairy, and weed from your life completely for 2 weeks. Take antacids, bismuth, heartburn medication, etc to help you manage the pain. After 2 weeks slowly reintroduce them back into your diet. If you try smoking weed again use a vaporizer and take small controlled hits. Don't milk it until you're about to pass out!

Alright so here is an update on my blood tests. No H pylori infection or any problems with the blood work. I've come to the conclusion that it is some type of digestive problem such as IBS. If you are having any type of abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, and diarrhea with no vomiting then you most likely have some sort of digestive problem as well. Although I don't believe weed in itself causes pain, I do believe it can contribute to your digestive problems. If you take too big of hits a lot of air can get trapped in your stomach. People with IBS or other digestive problems get major issues when air gets trapped in the stomach. Also, the weed is slowing down your digestion. If you have too much food in there that isn't getting digested like it should you're gonna have some problem.

Here are my suggestions if you have symptoms like me:

1. Fix your diet. This is absolutely essential. Find diets that work well for your particular condition and stick to them. This is the only way to get better.

2. Probiotics. I've read countless testimonials from people who got amazing relief from probiotics. I've started taking them myself and I will report back in a few weeks if it helps. Research which probiotic is best for your condition.

3. Vitamins & Supplements. There are many natural herbs & supplements you can take to help alleviate your symptoms. If you have diarrhea often, I suggest taking a fiber supplement. Your body needs aout 30g of fiber a day. Fish oil is strongly recommended for people with digestive issues. You can also try digestive enzymes or natural herbs such as enteric-coated peppermint oil capsules.

4. Exercise. Exercise is vital. It keeps everything running smoothly and it is also a natural anti depressant. Depression could be severely affecting your eating habits and overall stress on the body.

5. Mind & Body Relaxation. Learn relaxation techniques. Try yoga or deep breathing. Read the book recommended by MegAdam earlier called The Mind Body Prescription. It explains how subconscious psychological issues can contribute to gastrointestinal problems.

Please do not take prescription medication. Alleviate your symptoms naturally. Doctors get kick backs from the pharmaceutical companies to prescribe drugs so it is in their best interest to keep you sick and keep you from buying natural remedies that don't benefit them. Doctors will never look at the underlying problem. They only look to treat immediate symptoms and make more money for themselves at the end of the day.

On top of what Bradley has to say I would suggest to see a Naturopath doctor. They often can go a different route than a doctor and suggest the Vitamins and Supplements that actually WILL help in your case as there are many and some can do severe damage to your intestines without knowledge first.

Also, I disagree about doctors never looking into the underlying problems, it goes with how much you advocate for your own health. I would never have gotten the diagnosis for Celiac disease if I had not persisted at the walk-in, GP and also insisted for further testing as I just felt 'not right'. And now I've had a Tachycardia syndrome for the last year with symptoms absolutely everyday, that is not normal so I've been to the Cardiologist and a Electrophysiologist and will be having a procedure to slow my heartrate down as medications don't work (it's not from the marijuana use either all doctors are aware of my use).

You just need to be smart about your health including what the doctor has to say, medications to use and backing it up with what you see on the web (of course valued sites - such as; mayo clinic or wikipedia).

there is a theory called cannabinoid hyperemesis. Essentially the toxins in the thc accumulate in your fat cells. Once you burn the fat the toxins are released into your body and causes a mild overdose. Eg vomiting and nausea

You have no clue what you're talking about. Please provide proof, valid documentation from a reliable source, that smoking pot causes hemorrhoids and cancer. You can't. It doesn't. STOP misleading people with your uneducated stuff.

Hi there i know that this was posted a year ago but i am going through this with my dad right now he has had random episodes of throwing up and other related symptoms such as nausea and vomiting and i learned that marijuana can cause something called Cannabinoid hyperemesis hyper emesis just means frequent or over production of vomit or throw up emesis is a medical word for throwing up. so yes it is possible and you should definitely check into it.

I have been smoking for a little I've 3 years everyday for about 2 1/2 years. I've had stomach problems for a while, thought it could be from swallowing smoke since my method was typically bongs. Although after I went to the doctor he informed me of something called cannabis nausea where it affects the cannabinoid receptors negatively. I made a few changes to my diet because I don't believe that sh*t exists but who knows check it out.

I absolutely love weed but I can say that I have these same exact symptoms and I know it's from smoking too much. I am an all day everyday smoker (no cigarettes). It's the first thing I do when I wake up and the last thing I do before I go to bed. With that being said I would like to explain my stomach pain and see if it is similar to yours?

When I first started using weed it gave me the munchies but then after a while the munchies went away and the only time I would get an appetite is when I was high. About 15 minutes after I smoked however my stomach pain would go away and my appetite would come back. So unfortunately for me I think the drug that I love is also causing me the pain. When I'm not high my stomach is so tight and bloaded and force feeding myself momentarily eases the pain but never completely.

Your pain is from your gall blabber not pot, this is absolute hilarity. I had my gall bladder out, same symptoms, same meds, and i'm a smoker. Have your bile duct checked for stones (you can still create gal stones without a gal bladder) and have them check for an abcess (both of which i had after surgery). Marijuana does not cause "fake pain".. you all need to step away from the propaganda machine.

In about 1985 I had been smoking weed for 5 + years and out of no where I had very bad stomach pains, vomiting and diahria. I smoked every day. the doctors could not find the cause and ruled weed out. for the next 18 year about every three months I would have these episodes and the only help was demoral from the doctors to relieve the pain. eventually that stopped working. So in 2003 I just stopped smoking weed. Cold Turkey. I have never smoke again and never had any pain since. it was the weed.
