I am a 20 year old college student and I am glad to see that you have had a good experience with yours but I know a few other girls my age, including myself, that have experienced the same bad side effects as the middle aged women. I don't think age has anything to do with it. I have read more bad than good and I have just about every bad symptom that I have read on here from other women. This is my 2nd Mirena IUD and i've had it for almost 2 years now. I had my first one of 3 years removed because I was having so much pain in my lower abdomen. I tried the pill and got sent to the Neurologist with it because of migraines, which were more than likely caused from my bulging discs and stuff in my neck but I had to quit the pill because of the migraines. So I decided to try the mirena again and I've had worse problems with this one. Every doctor i've seen always says the same thing "the mirena won't cause any of these symptoms" so for the longest time I just let it go. I have horrible pains and sex is almost unbearable. I've always been little and since getting the IUD I have gained about 40 pounds. I also have the problems with the panic attacks and now see a cardiologist regularly for palpitations. I have also seen an endocrinologist and ENT for my thyroid. Still get migraines and I constantly feel weak and tired. The tiredness is a big factor because I can sleep 12 hours and still be sleepy and if I don't get around 12 hours of sleep it's hard for me to function and being that way with twins is very difficult. I love the concept of the Mirena but with all these other woman experiencing the same "weird" symptoms as me I have to say that I wouldn't recommend it.

Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences. I have had my Mirena for two weeks. I am getting mine removed today. My experience is: 1) Cramping. It didn't hurt to get it in..but hurt more afterwards. (I have two children). 2)  Unsettled panicky feeling - a feeling I have only felt when I've had two mochas in a single sitting. I don't have anxiety. 3) Heart rate is over 100 resting. 4)  Gained weight, and none of my pants fit me, despite exercising. 5)  I feel demotivated and depressed. I have never been depressed! Yuck. I can't take regular birth control either as it makes me lose my libido. Maybe some of us females just can't take this type of hormone or any for that matter.

So, when I told me doctor these effects, she told me to see a shrink. She is not my regular doctor and doesn't know me. I can attest to you that my symptoms were all legitimate. Since I have had the Mirena out, I am back to my old self, which is a happy, well-adjusted individual.

The more I actually brought this up in conversations, the more I"m learning that these symptoms are real.

The problem is that pharmaceutical companies don't want to have these listed since it will open up a slew of problems for them. I have worked in the pharmaceutical setting for seven years. My doctor, if she was a good doctor, would have recorded these symptoms and reported them. However she didn't. And so the cycle goes on with the voice of the general population being muted over the need for profit of the large pharmaceutical company.

What happened after you had it removed? Did you start to feel better?

THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT I HAD TO CONSIDER AFTER I HAD MY DAUGHTER. THE MOST INPORTANT THING WAS THE TYPE OF BORTH CONTROL THAT I WAS GONNA USE. I THOUGHT ABOUT AND SAID THE PILL WAS OUT BECAUSE I WORK A LOT AND I WOULD FORGET. SO ONE OF MY FRIENDS SUGGESTED THE IUD AND SHE TOLD ME ALL ABOUT IT EXCEPT THE HORRY. OMG I HAVE HAD IT FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS NOW. I HAVE THE MIRENA. I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IT NEEDS TO COME OUT ASAP. BUT THE DOWNFALL IS THAT MY HUSBAND WILL NOT USE A CONDOM AND HE DOES WANT ANOTHER CHILD. SO I AM DEALING WITH THIS HORRY DILIGENTLY. I HAVE HAD PANIC ATTACKS SO SEVERE THAT I HAVE BEEN ADMITTED IN THE HOSPITAL. I AM ALWAYS NAUSEAOUS,TIRED AND UNABLE TO SLEEP AT NIGHT. I ALSO HAVE LOST A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT OF WAIT DUE TO NAUSEA BECAUSE I AM NOT EATING. IF I HAVE SMETHING ON MY MIND THE AANXIETY IS INSTANTLY TRIGGERED AT THE DROP OF A HAT. I HATE THIS THING AND I HAVE DECIDED FOR THE YEAR OF 2013 I WILL BE FREE OF THIS UNESSASARY BULL Sh@T OF AN IUD. I HAVE BEEN ON TWO TYPES OF DEPRESSION MEDS AND THEY HAVE NOT HELPED I FEEL LIKE I HAVE WASTED MONEY SEEING A DOCTOR WHEN I ACTUALLY KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM. SO WHEN MY CYCLE COMES I WILL BE AT THE DOCTOR GETTING FREE FROM THIS DEVIL!!!!!!!

If your husband don't want any kids and won't use a condom why didn't he check into getting clipped? I told my boyfriend that I'm tired of this thing and if he didn't want any more kids it's time for him to do something cuz I can't handle this iud anymore.

I am having my IUD removed tomorrow.  Have had two years of anxiety and depression.  I have always been a little moody, but the IUD made me crash into a new person who rarely smiles, laughs, and wants to do anything.  My recent severe suicidal thoughts confirm that I have to see if this is the cause.  My therapist said she has seen several patients who never previously were depressed and suddenty had suicidal thoughts.  I hope to get some relief from this tomorrow.

yes that fluid thing has been happening to me for several months and I have had my mirena for about a year and a half. I keep telling myself that the wierd things that are happening to me are from me getting older and gaining weight. now I am questioning if I am getting the side effects that a lot of people are posting about. I am seeing my dr soon.

For me - the biggest side-effect is that IUD (the same as hormonal pills) act as abotifacients - as while using them you can still have breakthrough ovulation, which occurs in millions of women each year. You can still conceive a baby, who because of synthetic hormones cannot attach to the uterine lining and dies!

The IUD does little or nothing to interfere with sperm migration or fertilization (conception). It achieves its birth control effect primarily by preventing the newly conceived human life from implanting in the uterine lining (endometrium) and is thus an abortifacient.

I'm a big supporter of natural family planning - I effectively use it from the begging - and everything goes with the plan :-) For the beginners Lady-Comp family planning computer is great - as it has very high reliability and is is very easy to use :-) I have my Baby-Comp already two years - and it works perfect.....

Don't go for pills and IUDs - they are very good but for corporations not for your health and for your conceived baby...

I've had the Mirena IUD for almost 20 months now, I've been seriously unhappy for over 12 months and I always blamed it on my job. my boyfriend started looking at these forums after our sex life went downhill last year but I never thought it was the Mirena. After doing some research the last month I am almost positive it is. I used to be social, confident and even though I dislike my job I could always put a smile on. Now my social life has disappeared, I have no confidence, no energy, no sex drive and I'm angrier more often. Im getting the IUD out next week and I really hope it helps. I cant live like this anymore.

Hi - yes - I agree with you - for sure you should get our Mirena and stop using any hormones....start being natural and take care of your health - don't use any hormonal pill too, let me quote one of the recent research: Prof. Erik Odeblad is Professor Emeritus, Dept. of Medical Biophysics, University of Umeå, Sweden, and he has done a lot of research into the cervix and he has described the progressive aging of the cervix, ascending squamous metaplasia with diminution of crypt bearing areas, with use of the oral contraceptive pill.

To quote a noted expert, Professor Erik Odeblad: “Complications arising from the use of the Pill are very frequent. Infertility after its use for 7-15 years is a very serious problem. S crypts are very sensitive to normal and cyclical stimulation by natural oestrogens, and the Pill causes atrophy of these crypts. Fertility is impaired since the movement of sperm cells up the canal is reduced. Treatment is difficult.” He also wrote: “After 3 to 15 months of contraceptive pill use, there is a greater loss of the S crypt cells than can be replaced … A pregnancy rejuvenates the cervix by 2-3 years, but for each year the Pill is taken, the cervix ages by an extra year.”

As I wrote above - really start using natural and effective methods or natural birth computer, which based on that - like Lady-Comp, Baby-Comp or others.....I really recommend it - they are user-friendly and very, very effective - so you don't need to worry about abything....and they are ethical :-)

Good luck :-)
