I've had my second Mirena for 2 1/2 years ( it was inserted shortly after my daughter was born). Because my first Mirena ( which I had for 4 years) posed no problem I was unaware that anything negative could happen. Over the last two years I have suffered with weight gain/inability to lose weight despite being a fitness instructor, mood swings, depression, low libido, anxiety and general malaise. I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism shortly after my Mirena was inserted and chalked up the syptoms to that. I've been to a Naturopath to try and alleviate the symptoms with no luck. I thought I was going crazy until I found this site and the thousands of sites like this. I have a doctor's appointment to have my Mirena removed. To those still just tuning the symptoms are not in your head, advocate for yourself and have it removed!

Read this article before making your final decision to have it removed. Now that I am nearing my 5 year mark, I am considering having it reinserted.

I have had the Mirena since June 2013. I was told my periods would diminish which was the main reason I got it to begin with. Well I have been bleeding since I got it!! That's right, 7 months now!! Went to my OB after about 3 months and he said I could bleed up to 6 months. After going to a new Endrocrinologist for my throid, he told me this was NOT normal and needed to be addressed immediately. I have had the chest pains, mood swings, leg cramps (even feet cramps), odor (which I have NEVER had) bleeding non stop, and sleepless nights as well. This is ridiculous! I have my appointment to get this removed in about 2 weeks and I CAN'T WAIT!! This is miserable, I have a high sex drive and although my boyfriend doesn't mind that I'm bleeding (even though it hinders certain aspects), it really bothers me :/

Thank you so much for this post! I've been dealing with pretty much every symptom you have listed including heart palpitations, lightheaded, dizzy, numbness in arms & legs, ears ringing, bloating, vibrations in pelvic region, visual changes (seeing green & fog on occasion) and the list goes on. I've been to my general dr multiple times over the last couple years (since getting the mirena) & every doctor told me it was anxiety except one & that was the electro physiologist who put me on a heart monitor for a month & said I have ectopic atrial tachycardia & would put me on beta blockers but my blood pressure is too low. I've seen a neurologist, ob, cardiologist, 2 ER visits, had ultrasounds on my neck, ( as i felt something in my neck) 2 heart monitors, etc My dr started me on an anxiety med & I was on this for 3 weeks when my cardiologist told me to stop taking it since he saw some concerns with my heart & didn't feel it was anxiety related. Ugh! I talked to my OB about side effects of the iud & questioned if I should get it out about 5 months ago when the symptoms increased but he discouraged & said there really aren't any side effects of the mirena so I kept it in! I haven't felt myself in a couple years but the worst has been this past July-January feeling like out of body experiences & just not myself! I do feel increased anxiety & other symptoms arise when I get into crowds as well & I feel terrible because we end up leaving because of me. I just turned 30 in July & have had the mirena since 2012. The next step for me was I have an MRI of the brain on Tuesday & if no concerns there then seeing an endocrinologist to assess my hormones but now after reading this I'm going to my OB & getting the mirena out!!!!!! Thanks again for reassuring me I'm not crazy lol!

hi
it seems like I might have Mirena side effect too, just want to check see if anyone is experiencing this. I've had mine in for 2yrs now, at First I loved it as I had no side effects or so I thought lol. It's taken me 2yrs of wondering if I was going round the bend, until I began researching the side effects to this coil. I had been getting really bad headaches and felt weak dizzy which is not like me I'm full of energy normally. so my doctor sent me for an mri on my head which came back clear thank God.my lack of interest in sex is fading to the point of we'll leave it tonight lol to when I do have sex with my husband I pour of blood down my legs with bits of flesh, its painful to have sex my tummy hurts all the time and I get server stabbing pains in my tummy. I have been getting bleeding in between my non existent periods, bloating, I've put on 3 stone and I hardly eat. I keep being sick, so I went to my docs and he pressed my tummy which made me cry real bad, and he's sending me for a scan. The moods have been terrible I have accused everyone of everything under the sun. I can't sit down without server pain in my stomach. My wee is dark green so I'm waiting for a scan on
anyone thinking of the mirena stay well away

Hello! I'm glad to have found this post! I had the mirena inserted January 2011, started having tight chest, heart palpitations, crazy anxiety like nothing I've ever experienced. I am now 29 and live a healthy lifestyle. Eat well, don't smoke and exercise- all the things I should be doing for a healthy life. I'd like to know how long it took for you to be completely back to normal? I track the anxiety/ heart palps monthly and they are for sure heightened during the week before my period all the way through ovulation. It's been 2.5 years since my Iud has been out... Will I ever be my old self?!
Thanks and looking forward to any updates!!

Oh my, I have those same anxiety attacks. I don't have them all the time, but I get them and here lately I noticed that my mood changes all the time. I was told it was hormones, which I am sure is part of it and the weird thing I was wondering if it had to do with this Mirena IUD. Because I didn't feel like this before and I am on my second one but I was just going by what the doctor was telling me. Than I read this and its like I am reading about myself. Thank you for posting this, I am going to contact my doctor.

I've never had anxiety attacks before having the Mirena inserted, and now I'm having them almost daily.  I'm also having terrible headaches almost daily and migraine attacks at least twice - three times a month (before I would get migraines 2 -3 times a year at the most).  The only thing that has changed these past four months (when I started having these symptoms) is the Mirena.  I used to love the idea of not having my period (it completely stopped after a month) but I'm fed up with the headaches and migraines.  Getting it removed tomorrow!

I have also experienced severe side effects of Mirena - acute anxiety that came out of nowhere, heart racing, depression, feeling of being alone in the world, foggy head.  My doctor told me there was no way it could be the Mirena and thought I might be schizophrenic.  I was out of commission for about 2 weeks, crying, worrying, not sleeping. It's been 8 months since I removed it and I'm still battling the side effects.  But I'm seeing a great naturopath who is helping me adjust.  I exercise, eat healthy and try to stay positive.

The funny thing is my 23 year old daughter also had a Mirena and after about 3 months had the EXACT same symptoms as I did.   I have a niece who also as the IUD with few, to no, side effects.   She must just be lucky.

Please know this is not in your head.  The symptoms are real and you are not to blame. Something needs to be done so other women don't have to suffer like we did.

Any sort of hormonal birth control will cause all of these symptoms and Mirena has Progesterone.  I went of the pill 2 years ago and I finally feel like I have my emotions, my health and my life back.

I have been contemplating different birth control options for 2 years (my hubby won't get a vascectomy!), and have decided on the copper IUD which does not use hormones.  Copper is a natural sperm killer (yes!) and it lasts for up to 12 years!

I am so glad that I am no longer on BCPs. Looking back, I see that the hormones in the pill had so many side effects like migraines, major mood swings, depression, acne, anxiety and inability to get in touch with my own intuition and feelings.  I feel so much clearer mentally and I don't have headaches!  The first year off was a struggle with bad PMS, cramps and heavy flow, but now, that has stabilized.  I find also that the healthier my diet, less alcohol, sugar and coffee I consume, the better my menstrual cycle is.

My OBGYN kept telling me for years that my symptoms were not from the pill - I new in my heart that I was right and she was wrong.

Good luck ladies!

My OBGYN said similar things about the birth control pill: "there's no way your symptoms are from the pill!" I knew in my heart she was wrong and it took me years to get off the pill. SO glad I did!
