I would like to thank everyone for your honest comments and experiences with the Mirena IUD. I am 40 years old and I have an 11 year old son. I believe that I am "one and done" but because "you never know" I chose to get the IUD for the time being. I had it inserted in March 2011. I have weighed between 140-145lbs. for the past 5 years (that is with irregular exercise and some healthy choices). Since March, I have gained about 15 lbs! Everyone notices and my dad and ex-husband both commented on the weight gain because it is extremely out of character for me. In addition, I have developed acne on my chest and face (I was blessed with really smooth, soft skin), and I also have a vaginal discharge/wetness that causes me to use pantyliners every day.
For the past month, I had begun to really pick up on my exercise and make healthier choices (I thought the weight gain was a combination of effects of age and non-regular exercise). I've bought infomercial exercise kits and I am walking, jogging, and doing abdominal exercise six days a week. I purchased a George Foreman grill and I have not eaten fried or fatty foods. I HAVENT LOSS A POUND!!
I asked my GYN if weight gain was a side effect and he responded, "No." He said that the biggest complaint for his patients was the lack of comfort they felt about not have menstrual periods. Ironically, that was what I wanted more than anything. I still have menstrual periods although they are lighter. Other side effects besides acne and weight gain and vaginal discharge have been pain during sex and some headaches. That is too many! So after 4 months of this, the bad outweighs the benefits of this type of birth control and I will call my gyn in the morning to request IMMEDIATELY REMOVAL!!
My advice is: Listen to your body. It tells the truth. I don't care what these doctors say. Lots of folks in the healthcare profession are making money off of these products but we are suffering with the side effects!
I will be MIRENA-FREE this week. I will keep everyone posted as the side-effects disappear over the next few weeks.
Good luck Ladies.
Have it removed! I'm so happy that I did!

But I must admit that I had a bad reaction to The Pill in my 20s, and I quickly learned my complaints fall on deaf ears anyway, so why bother? When my GYN asked why I wanted my Mirena out, I simply said "I don't need it anymore".
However, I did tell my mom all about it. And sadly, it seems her horror stories from 40 years ago are still happening today...
She shared her experience with the original non-hormonal copper coil IUD, the kind notorious for leaving women PID-scarred and sterile in the early 70s. Although these days we both contend they are safer than Mirena!
Anyway, the regular copper coil IUD actually makes menstruation heavier, which was a common and well-known side effect even back then. The blood loss made my mom weak and sick every month, so she told her GYN about it. Instead of removing the IUD and prescribing iron pills for the dizziness, etc, this nutjob planned to insert a bag filled with hot fluid to scorch the inside of her uterus.
Seriously! WTF?
Of course she got a second opinion. or else I probably wouldn't be here today!
Mirena was only tested on about 1500 white European women, who all already had one child, and who all already used a copper coil before. Not exactly a thorough study... Now we're the real guinea pigs, but no one is listening to our side effects reports. So shameful. But given the history of birth control, it is very typical.
