And another thing, i am sick nearly each morning and evening after breakfast or if i drink something after a meal. I feel paged but i know i am not expectant. What a horrible little tool!
I was 142 pounds when I was 42 and I had the IUD Mirena put in. I have always been very active and worked out HARD, but the harder I work out and the more I diet I have gained up to 200 pounds. Now I have diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I checked into all sorts of weight lost solutions, had every hormone level checked, all my thyroids levels checked. My doctor is completely besides himself and I am so depressed that I won't even leave the house. FINALLY I realized it was the Mirena. I am having it taken out immediately. I have gained 13 pounds a year since I have it........UGH!
Those of you posting about the weight gain, did you lose it after the Mirena was removed?
As i sit hear eating a bag of chips ( i have been having cravings most of the time..n not pregnant) I am taken with such relief that i am not alone in the "Wonderful World of Merena ." I got the Merena shortly after giving birth to my twins in 2008. Pre- pregnancy i weighed in at 135 pds. During pregnancy i weighed a whopping 216. Keep in mind i was carrying a load. Post pregnancy i returned to my pre-pregnancy weight and looked fabulous; i might add. So, it came as a disappointment that i gained so much weight with this darn merena. I had tried EVERY diet program in the world and nothing has helped. I have severe mood swings, headaches, fatigue, and some restless nights. I have not felt attractive due to this bulging belly which causes many to believe that i am prego again.
I went to speak with my gyno the other day and planned to have it removed. We discussed the Esure (permanent but less invasive ). Looks like a no brainer to me. I am so determined to get this thing removed i'd do it myself if i wasn't afraid i rupture something important :)
Read Web MD site. The Mirena IUD does not cause weight gain. The amount of progesterone in the IUD is so small that it is less than one tenth of the amount normally made. Sadly, one third of women are obese, and this is projected to increase to one half by 2020. The amount of weight gain reported by patients over an extended period of the time is the same for condoms, Mirena, Paragard(which has no hormone) and non-contraceptive users. Ergo, there is no significant contribution of contraceptive method to weight gain. Interestingly, the IUD is the most used contraceptive method by female gynecologists because of its effectiveness, ease, and safety. What do they know that you don"t?
scanning through your posts I see that there are maybe one person out there that is happy with the Mirena, I am so happy for you!! to me it only brought problems... more than what any person should endure..... Today 20 months after having it removed, I am a new person!!! .. it took one year for the hormones to work out, but after it did, the kilo's started to fall off me!! I do not have to use antidepresants any more!! I have been clean for 18 months now!! and I feel great!!!!!!! best news .... I now fit into what they call here in South Africa a size 8 .... that's pretty good!!! I have lost 21 Kilos... that's 9.5 ponds!! ... 10cm around each arm!!... 12cm around each leg... and 17cm around my waist!!! my breast has gone down to a 32C!!...(while I had the mirena.. 36DD!!!) HORMONES!!!... I hope this gives somebody or maybe everybody some hope ........
things to remember.... It took a long time before I lost weight, (I had it in for 5 years.. and a new one after that for 1 year).
no two people are the same, our body's respond differently to hormones, and their maybe outside factors that also have influences .. but for me... I am free!! happy and slim!! (and I wasn't when I had the mirena)!!!
Good luck to everybody!!!
God bless
Hello Everyone,
I had the IUD Mirena insterted July of 2011. I have gained about 20 lbs. I weigh a wopping 150 lbs and im 5'3''. I have been extremely active this past year and i ve totally changed my diet, started taking vitamins, and anything else to drop a measly 10 pounds. I ve been thinking that it might be the Mirena. I ve asked my doctor and they say that it doesn't affect weight but where are all the missed periods going anyway?? I love it bc its a great form of birth control for me being 23 years old. Its great for any age, but this weight gain is killing me emotionally. I think i need to get it removed bc i would rather be happy with my body than anything else.

I have been told by my gyn, and by several nurses that the weight gain doesn't have anything to do with the Mirena. I had mine removed in Aug. 2012, four months ago, and haven't lost any weight. I had the Mirena in for the full 5 years, and loved it. I'm happy to say that though my periods are not regular, I did not have the horrible bleeding and cramping that some people have reported. It was an easy removal. I bled a little the next day, and have spotted regularly, but I'm glad it wasn't as bad as was reported in one of these threads! I think you hear about the negative, but you don't hear about the good things!
