Thank you all for the insight. I am also having weight gain issues and cravings for sweets especially chocolate. I am making an appointment for removal.

I've had my Mirena since January and have gone up 2 pant sizes.
I have been on Mirena for 6 years. When my doctor recommended it he pointed out that if I was suffering from menstral cramps this product would alleviate the pain, I told him that wasn't a problem for me, and asked him if I would suddenly begin having cramps. He looked at me like he wanted to pat me on the head and say, "Silly woman!" Ever since then I have had excrutiating cramping, gained almost 25 pounds and grown facial hair (another question I asked my doctor). Apparently, the idea is to make me as unattractive to my husband as possible so he'll stay away from me.

After seeing all these posts, I realized I'm not crazy and tomorrow I'll be Mirena free.

On a serious note, once I pointed out all these things to my husband, he was quite concerned about what this was doing to me on the inside that we couldn't see. He's even considering the big snip.

Thank you, ladies.

I gained about 20 pounds within the first few months of having my mirena. That was five years ago. Several doctors have told me that there aren't any real ties to the mirena and weight gain, and that I should just move more, eat less. So over the years, I've been eating between 900-1500 calories most days and working out for anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour (about 45 minutes average). And for all that I'm 10 pounds heavier, making a grand total of 30 pounds gained since I got this thing in. I have had my blood tested more than once to see if I have some kind of thyroid problem, but everything comes back normal.

I can't hardly wait to take this thing out. I just pray my weight issues aren't stuck with me now for life.
I have been on Mirena since March and I have gained 23 pounds, 10 of those with in the first month of having it. I really enjoy the peace on mind Merina gives me, as well as the next to nothing periods. I have however made an appoint with my Doctor to have it removed and maybe consider a non-hormonal IUD.

I am no Doctor or scientist, but I do know the only change in my life and activities before the weigh gain was the Mirena.
Woo hoo ! Got mine yanked today. Praying for big changes on the scale now soon...
I was on mirena for 8 months and could not lose my baby weight!! Then I started to get bigger and bigger as the months would go on. I knew there was some thing wrong because after my first child I lost the weight fast. After doing some research I came on this form and seen all the women with the same problems. I call my doctor and got it yanked lol! Every sense I have lost 10 pounds in 3 months and more is coming off me.. IF YOUR ON MIRENA GET OFF IT ASAP!!!! I am on yaz now and love it.
Hey all,

I should have read all of these posts before deciding to have the IUD put in!! I'm extremely regretful and have had it removed today!! Can't wait to start living my life again. I had the IUD put in a year ago at approximatley 8 weeks postpartum. Me and my hubby are in the military and he was coming back from Iraq so I wanted to be able to "catch up" on all that we've missed out on when he got back. I had lost 30 pounds after I had my son and before I had the IUD placed. When I had the IUD in for approximately 3 or 4 months, I noticed a total change in my behavior. The moodiness almost ruined my marriage since me and my husband are already stressed out due to the operations tempo of being in the military. My boobs got huge which started the back pain and now at my one year mark, I have gained 40 pounds!! Mind you, I am a cop in the military and it is mandatory for me to stay in shape and work out 6 days a week an hour at a time!!! I thought maybe I was just gaining muscle mass, but no!! I am fat!!! I've always been 120 to 140 pounds!! Another thing was the cramps!! The cramps would get so bad I would have to lay down in the fetal position after killing 3 tylenol's!! I do like the convenience of the IUD but I just don't think it's worth my marriage! For all of you who haven't gained weight or experienced the extreme side effects of the IUD, youre lucky!! If you have, get rid of it!! I heard Yaz is awesome!
I got the mirena put in the spring of this year and noticed about a 5 pound weight gain in the first week! when i went in for my checkup appointment i expressed my concerns to my doctor and she basically made me feel crazy. she kept telling me over and over that there have been no studies to link weight gain with mirena, so i thought maybe it was just in my head and decided to wait it out. well i've just noticed lately that i seem to keep gaining weight despite the fact that i work out at least 5 times a week and eat pretty healthy. im starting to think my doctor was wrong and im afraid i will keep gaining weight. what have other peoples doctors said about this issue?
Wow! This is s0o0o Crazy...I just got The Mirena put in on the 29th of Aug. so its been very close to a month now...and up until now, I never thought I was having problems...

Just the other day, I noticed my face started breaking out...and a little on my chest and shoulders...which isnt all that abnormal for me when it comes to menstrating; So who knows if the IUD is the cause of that...

I was referred for the Mirena due to having Endometreosis. I guess with less periods and such, that it will in time prevent all the pain I have from the Endometreosis... but Im just not sure...

I would say about 2 weeks after having the IUD put in, I had an "Attack" in my stomach...aweful pain, which Im pretty use to from the Endometreosis.. but this was REALLY bad! Ive noticed over about a months time now, that I have gained 10+ lbs....and thats NEVER a good thing...especially since Im already overweight from having 2 kids in such a short time....

Im scared for the fact that Im considering getting my tubes tide, because Dont want to have to deal with leaving something inside of me this long, and that it may be causing me all these problems Ive encountered in such a short time...and who knows what else is to come from all this...after all, its only been ONE MONTH! most of these scary stories are from women who have had the IUD in for a good while...I don think Im up for waiting to see IF more problems occur..

The crazy thing is, that before I got it put in, I already was moody, and sleepy all the time, and just couldnt "Deal" with my daily life....I know sometimes, things can do the Opposite of what you were going through to begin with... So I have this LITTLE bit of faith, that maybe, just maybe, things will get better with the IUD... I already have HUGE breasts, and Ive heard where women actually went DOWN cup sizes, which sounds AMAZING! so I think I MIGHT just wait it out a few, and see if things get better, or WORSE! Good luck to ME and ALL OF YOU!

I have had mirena iud for five months now. During these five months I have gained around 10 pounds. 10 pounds gain is so obvious. I did expect some weight gain but not this much. I would like to know if there are women who also gained this much weight and the measures you took to lose it. Did you get rid of the mirena or did you start dieting? Thx
[I have been on mirena 3 wks and is great except the weight gain. 10 lbs also, I'm going to get it removed, I'll fall into a deep depression if i gain anymore, I eat healthy and exercise 6 days a wk, this is discouraging. I'm afraid to wait too long, what if I can't loose that extra weight? /quote]

Hi new to this, and this is my first post... I have been reading things on here and other sites all day... I am in shock!! I have a long story but please read and help me if you can. In feb 2006 my mum became ill, myself and my sisters nursed her until she died in may of that year. (I was using the copper IUD at the time and was a size 8-10 and weighed between 8.5-9 stn (120-126lbs). I lost that weight even after each of my three children (I put on 4 stone each pregnancy)within a matter of weeks) When my mum passed away I took it really bad as is expected, I had a hard time adjusting... In november 2006 i needed to get my coil changed (the copper iud- no hormones) and as i had been having very heavy very long periods the doctor advised that i have the mirena which I did. By this time because of the grief i was moping around and comfort eating a bit I had put on a few pounds was still in a size 10(uk sizing-not sure what that is in us). by may 2007 I ended up being under the priory for serious clinical depression having group and 1-1 counseling and prozac, I got much better i stayed on the prozac for about 18 months have been back on them twice and i am back on them now. I am now a size 16 and weigh around 12.1/2stone (175lbs). I have struggled with my weight and my moods and lethargy, I never thought that it was this coil!!! I can not actually get my head round it!! I made an appt with the doc to have it out tomo!! please give me some info if you know someone. or you have had yours out and seen results... honestly I am so confused right now... I just want to see if these last 4 years have been down to the this coil!!!
