I had the Merina IUD inserted in mid November 2006. The first month &1/2 I spotted all month and was weepy & depressed. The moodiness has significantly decreased and the bleeding has stopped completely (except for a hint of spotting about the time I would have had a period.)
*** However, the Weight Gain and the inablity to loose the weight is discouraging and will ultimately be a deal breaker. I have gained 7-8 pounds. Reasonably I could attribute a couple to the holidays, but it feels like more and feels like it is much harder to drop off than usual. Also my bra cup is overflowing and the belly fat seems worse.
*** I am 48 years old and know my body pretty well - so although I love the convenience of no periods, no pg worries, I am disappointed in the weight gain, particularly because I had a Copper 7 from 1977 to 1987 without any problems and was extremely happy. *** I thought the Hormones from Mirana would have helped with my premenapausal symtoms, and it may have. I*** I would appreicate feed back from women with these pre-menapausal circumstances at _[removed]_ if possible.
*** I am thinking I should have the Merina removed and go back to the non-hormonal IUD and I will if I can't loose the weight with my regular weight management regime during the month of January 2007. In which case the Merian IUD will be history and I will have to chalk up the $400 fee to buyer-beware -- and that I should have done better research before taking the word of the Planned Parenthood clinic. Thanks to all that have posted. best regards, Renae

I got mirena put in march of 06 and I have done everything from starving myself to lose weight. I walk at least 8 hours a day because I wait tables and the scale wont budge. I have never liked sweets until I got mirena and now I crave them. I am getting it out today!
I am using it to control heavy periods, so I need the hormones.
I had my period when it went in, and it seemed to 'stop' it...
I've barely bled since yesterday afternoon..
It really really hurt going in, and I cramped heavily for about 15 minutes. I went home, took an alleve (or 3) and went to bed. Woke up feeling fine, very minimal cramping since then.
I hope I don't gain weight as I'm trying to lose it- finally.
I guess I'll keep looking around and I'll post my results too.

I have had my mirena now for a year and am having it out next month. I had it put in 2 months after my son was born and had already lost all my pregnancy weight plus five pounds. I have since gained over 20 pounds and cannot seem to even maintain my weight, let alone lose a pound. I feel like I am pregnant, my abdomen is so swollen and bloated and my chest size is a 38H! Next time I will know better and get something hormone free for birth control. I hope I can save someone else all this trouble.
I've had my mirena put in around 5 weeks ago and I am loving it. I've lost about 7 pounds (was on the pill before), and have no complaints. I have just gotten my period last week, which is unfortunate but nothing new. I've also lost my cravings for snacks.
It hurt getting it put in, but the pain subsided after 15 seconds. My boyfriend felt the strings the first couple of times, but that hasnt happened in weeks now. I'm perfectly happy with it! I've also gotten rid of moodswings and feeling "numb" which is how I felt on the Pill (I took Mycrogynon).

i think the whole experiance is awful, mood swings sad, depressed, alot of wieght gain, my stomach pooched out like im 4 months pregnant, its all of that poision inside of us, i have scheaduled mine to get out next week, i am a go getter in life and this whole hormone thing is a BIG LIE, LADIES PAY ATTENTION we do not have to except this, most doctors just push it becuase its a business for them. Enough is enough
I Had the Mirena put in twice. The first time it worked so good i just reciently had it put in AGAIN after my daughter. Ive had it for 5 months now and i have gained so much weight in my stomache its crazy. I just recintly found out that, because the first time I had the Mirena, I had a steady period once a month I did not gain NO WEIGHT... But now this second time I dont have any bleeding so Im going to gain wieght from it.
So basically if you have a period with the Mirena then your safe, but if you dont have a period then you gain wieght.. I believe it from experience..

I was 8 weeks postpartum and breastfeeding when I had the mirena inserted.
In less than 3 weeks I noticed:
-Horrible headaches and dizziness
-sharp shooting pains in my breasts with chapped and bleeding nipples (not thrush or mastitis, I had it checked. The dr had no idea what it was)
-weight gain (12lbs) and puffiness
-decreased milk supply and a fussier infant (the hormones have been found in breastmilk and in the infant)
-massive mood swings
-no libido (This is my 3rd child and I do normally have a sex drive 8 weeks postpartum so it was strange)
I finally realized all the symptoms had one commonality and it was the mirena. Everything started 48 hours after the mirena was inserted. I had it removed and in 5 days everything has gone back to normal.
I have always been very sensitive to all forms of birth control and had hoped this would be different. Oh well!

I had my IUD placed in November 2006, it has been 6 months. During the first 3 months i gained 20lbs then the next two i gained about 10lbs more. I was 135lb when before I had it inserted, this is insane. My doctor said i may gain about 5 lbs but this is much more. I also work out everyday for 40 minutes and i also have rugby 3 times a week for 2 hours which is only running. I eat healthy too, very balanced 6 small meals a day if you can call them meals. Its also odd i never had a craving for chocolate or salty things before i had it inserted and never ate things like that, now I crave it, and I cant give in then i get depressed and think about how much I miss my family.
I had my mirena removed yesterday 04/17 after 6 1/2 months. I gained 20pounds during that 6 1/2 months, for no apparent reason. I am not saying that I ran marathons everyday, but I was under normal eating and exercise activity that held me constant at my previous weight, the only difference was the mirena. I am angry that OBs can insert this while denying that it causes weight gain! Lets face it, most women would not have it implanted if they were told it caused weight gain, which is probablly why the manufacturer also denies it.

There are no calories in Mirena and systemic levels of hormones are almost undetectable. I suggest that you watch what you're eating and not blame a contraceptive device.
Everyone is different. Everyones body reacts diffrent as well. And i quess that you didn't take that into account when you said that dumb quote of yours. It is very possible that peolpe can have weight gain from an IUD!
I had my IUD inserted 6 wks pp. I had lost all of my baby weight and was cointinuing to lose more. After several months with the IUD I started to notice myself gaining weight. I have also had severve mood swings. I have been to the ER b/c of ovarian cyst rupturing. The Er doc told me that it might be a good idea to get the IUD removed. I saw my GYN who said that all was fine and that 15 lbs of weight gain is not as bad as 30 lbs if I got pregnant again. Since then I have had numbness in my right arm and hand. I am extremely worried about these side effects. So recently I saw another GYN who insisted that the IUD did not cause my 40lbs of weight gain and the fact that i have had the IUD for 1 year now and only had 2 periods was "common." The doc aslo ran a thyroid test to see if that was causing the weight gain. It came back normal. So in conclusion I eat right and exercise daily, I have never been overweight a day in my life UNTIL the IUD. I am saving up the money to get the stupid thing removed.
yes, i have gained 10 pounds and have not been able to lose my baby weight since i got my iud. i am having mine removed because it has been giving me side effects for the past two months now, but it work great for a year despite the weight gain:)
I have had mirena for four months now and have experienced weight gain. I have been working out consistently and even more since I noticed the weight gain, and have been on a high protein, low fat diet. I cannot lose the weight and am about to get this IUD taken out!
I had the Mirena inserted about 3 months ago. I had bleeding/spotting for the first month continously. I was very irritable and emotional. I felt like cryng almost daily. And absolutely no sex drive. I spoke with my doc about this and she put me on b/c pills to help with these symptoms. She told me to take the pills for 2 months and then try a month with the IUD only. Then we would revisit this. I have also gained almost 5 pounds even though my eating habits and exercise routine have stayed the same, maybe gotten better. This morning as I was out walking and feeling bad about this chubby belly, it hit me that maybe the IUD was causing this. I got on the computer and started this search. I am so thankful that I did. I know now that all these "symptoms" are not in my head. I called my doc today and will be having the Mirena IUD removed tomorrow. Hopefully that will help me even out emotionally and lose the weight. I will post my results.
