Hi there all,
I just found this site and wanted to also post my experiences on Mirena. Thanks so much everyone for posting. We have so few references on this subject!
After having it for nearly a year, I had it removed yesterday. I like so many other women, had terrible symptoms. Mine were relatively good compared to some I've read. I've gained around 12 lbs, which is not that bad but what is weird is my body composition has completely changed. I have a lot of belly fat, and my breasts have gone up 3 sizes at least. They are heavy and uncomfortable. I weigh more now than I ever have even though I exercise. I can't shed a pound at all. In addition, I have terrible acne and skin texture and I get really hot at night with occasional night sweats. Unbelievable water retention....I wanted to make sure that I wasn't making excuses for the weight gain by blaming the IUD so I have given it nearly 12 months, but having read the EXACT symptoms from so many others, I felt it was time to be hormone free. Some people do well on it and I am jealous but my body is very sensitive to hormones and owe it to myself to feel better. I've just turned 31 and I want to feel like am my age. I'm getting married and couldn't imagine being so bloated for my wedding. I am really excited to get back to being me! I will try to re-post my results of being IUD free later....
Wow, I've been suffering with an inability to lose weight for the last 9 months despite switching to a very restrictive diet and adding in a very aggresive excersize schedule. This is unusual for me - I typically lose weight very quickly, especially when excersizing, I never even thought of it being the Mirena I had put in a couple years ago but now it makes sense. I'm going to see about getting it taken out, which is upsetting because I was really enjoying the "no need to think about it" birth control method.
I have had the Mirena in for about a month and about a week after it was inserted I got really bad stomach pains. Ever since then I have had extremely irregular bowel movements and a lot of stomach pain in my lower abdomen. I thnk I am going to have it removed I am not comfortable with it and all the side effects.
I don't think the Mirena IUD makes you gain weight, I do think it changes your body composition. My boobs went from a B to a D from the IUD and Maybe a little water weight retention maybe you know 3 lbs worth, but I am the same weight if not less.
I do think when you have the mirena IUD you need to watch your sugar level, yes that will make you gain weight. You have to have a diet lower in sugars and sodium.
I have noticed I have been getting a lot of sinus infections, which part of that is do to all the allergies and I do believe part of it has to do maybe with the iud.
before I had the IUd, I weighed a 135-140 lbs which is healthy cause I was toned, but I had a hard time cause it was like my chest deflated because I had like no body fat, but my butt, so the IUD actually helped me
I was on the Mirena for 4 years and it was the most miserable 4 years in my life. I had tremendous pain. I gained 50lbs in 4years. My periods were unusally abnormal (brown discharge only was the recent period). I was unable to do set ups because of the pain in my lower ab area. I went to the doctor multiple times it was never the IUD. I finally told the doc I think I should have it removed. It's been 2 days since the IUD was removed and I am healing and feeling so much better.
I wish I had seen this before I got my IUD. I've had it for 6wks and have gained 7lbs. None of my clothes fit me anymore. My stomach is huge, looks like I'm 5mo pregnant.

Now I want to get it removed, but it was the most painful experience ever getting it inserted, so I'm afraid to get it taken out, but I think I need to because every week I'm gaining another pound.
i just had the merina inserted last week. i am already feeling a little bloated. i will try it about a month and see if my bloated feeling/weight gain continues...my sex drive hasnt been what is normally is--but it's only been a week. my worry is that if i have it removed my insurance company will refuse to cover other forms of birth control since they shelled out $600 plus dollars for this. Does anybody know or had experience with their insurance co. on this matter? i wish i had read all of these posts/had done more research on merina; but with 2 kids i dont have the time! does anybody have other suggestions on other types of birth control other than the pill/depo/patch/iud. something hormone free?
I am so amazed that the doctor did not discuss any of this with me. I have had weight gain (although I do cardio and strength daily and I feel like I am starving to death, I have put on eight pounds in 3 months), bloating, bladder infections, unexplained fevers, no libido, swelling, moodiness, back/breast pains and gassy (ick!).
I am going to check my bp today! This is some scary information. I wish I would have checked it out myself instead of trusting my doctor. My primary physician finally put 2 + 2 together and told me it was the IUD. I am going to see if it gets any better over the next 6 months. Thank goodness I have a husband with a sense of humor.
Hello, I had the Mirena put in a little over a month ago. I take wellbutrin for anxiety and concerta for adhd. I have been so mean. Up until now I was searching the internet for other options for wellbutrin. I have been talking to my psychologist about possible reasons for the change. It never occurred to me that it could be the iud. I'm not a believer that you need to wait things out over one month to see the full effects. It's been over a month, and I have had no sex drive so, in that respect it's great birth control... I am a weigh myself in the morning girl, and have noticed a flux in weight of 2-4lbs. I'm only 5' so, it's noticable. I am going to call my Dr. tomarrow, I have my follow up appointment this week, and I think I will have it removed. I also expericed bleeding every day. Sometimes brown, bright red. I have had cramping daily (but not all day). It hurt like birth going in, I hope it hurts less coming out. My husband needs a break, I have little patience with the kids and him. Respond to what your body tells you.
I've had the Mirena IUD for six months. I have gained 30 pouds and I crave sugar constantly. My breasts are swollen and sore two weeks out of the month. I had to buy new bras twice the size they were. They are the size they were when I was breastfeeding my babies and they feel that way too! I broke out with acne on my face, neck, chest. So badly that I'm on a constant does of tetracycline to keep it under control. Every time I'm intimate with my husband, I'm foul and end up with BV. So, I have a constant Rx for that too. I'm tired all the time. My face, hands, and feet are so swollen. Oh, new shoes too. I went from a size 8 to 9 because of the swelling! I could go on and on. GROUCHY! MOODY! LISTLESS! There's no living with me.

The only beneift I have found with the Mirena is my periods are very
light.

I've read all sorts of posts about this issue and I should have read more before making the decision to have it implated. At least I can lose the weight and get back to looking and feeling normal again.
I have had mine in for a year and have loved it. I have had bad side effects but never really associated them with the IUD until now. I guess my biggest complaint is the acne. It is all over my back and chest which has never happend before. And my breast have shrunk considerably three sizes actually. I thought that was because I just stopped breastfeeding though.

A word of warning. My husband began to feel the IUD about a month ago. I went in to the doctor yesterday to have it removed and she couldn't find it. Somehow it has gotten LOST inside me. Now we are going through a series of tests and so much stress I can't stand it. I am having really bad cramping which might mean it is migrating in my abdomen, but because we are tricare and located at one of the busiest army hospitals in the country I can't get an appointment for the ultrasound for another two weeks.

I will never do another IUD. The risks seem to outweigh any benifit. My alternative is the Nuvaring. It probably will suck too, but at least that won't get lost.
I had the Mirena removed about three weeks ago and already I feel better. My question for others is: how long did it take to finally start losing weight? I thought I've read before that it takes 1-2 periods to rid the hormones associated with weight gain and inability to lose weight to leave your body. Is this true?
yes!! I have had the mirena for over a year now. I had it inserted about 3 months after I had my son. I had lost almost all my baby weight, but now 1 year later..I weigh more than I did when I had my son! I have gained close to 35 pounds!!!! I am having high blood pressure, shortness of breath, I can't even climb stairs!! My hormones are all out of wachk!!! On top of that, I have tried walking to lose weight it did not work...I was walking 2 miles a day. Then I joined curves and lost no weight in 3 months!!!! I only lost 1% of body fat....IN THREE MONTHS!!!, I started running the two miles and I have lost only 5 pounds so far!! I run 2.5 miles a day...6 days a week...and I count all my calories....i am only taking in 1100 calories a day. I cut out all soda, tea, and I only drink water. And I still haven't lost!!! I have made an appointment to get my MIrena taken out...which I hate because I love the freedom it provides!!! And I have had no problems....
I got prego on the pill, and the patch makes my skin break out in hives, So I have no idea what I am going to use as birth control!!!
I got the Mirena in March of 2005. My eating habits are descent, I do indulge in sweets and fried foods at least once a month. But ever since I had the Mirena, I have gained over 25 pounds. I exercise for about 30 minutes 3 times per week. The weight may nudge downward by 2-5 pounds and then back up again. And I think that I start gaining the weight because of the fact that I bleed after I am done working out. Sometimes I'd rather keep it because I use to have very heavy and painful periods, but I still get cramps from the Mirena. I am highly considering removing this foreign object from my body.
I had my mirena inserted in December of 05. I have felt like I have a foreign body attached to me!! I have gained 15 or more pounds and have a constant bloated uncomfortable feeling!! I was very moody and sad feeling and put on Lexipro which has helped!! I am having this thing removed on Friday and pray I finally feel like my old self again!! I have tried everything to lose wight with no luck!! I use to be able to drop 5 lbs in a week if I put my mind to it!!! Cant wait till Friday!! :-D
