I had the mirena put in end of April. I had it taken out Monday and Im 30 pounds heavier than i was when it was placed. The mirena doesnt make you gain weight by itself, but progestin DOES stimulate your appetite, and can cause fatigue, which of course would result in weight gain for some. If we learned to share information nicely instead of being snotty and condescending about things, we could empower ourselves. The IUD's effect everyone differently and any doctor that doesnt point that out is lacking in practice. Im feeling better already and have not been bloated in two days. This works for some women, and for some it just flat out sucks. Some of you are pretty nasty, mood swings and irratibility are a pretty prominent side effect also.
You're incorrect. everyone is different....and can react to particular hormones differently. Therefore, it is possible for some people to gain weight due to the change of hormones. However- it is VERY unlikely one will become obease over a simple IUD. But it is not completely out of the question.
I had the Mirena put in right after the birth of my 2nd child and had it in for 6 1/2 years. I too LOVED the Mirena until recently. Since my son was born, I was startled increasingly feeling pain in my joints. It started out in my ankles and progressed to my knees my toes and my fingers. I blamed it on childbirth and thought that my body just didn't bounce back. the pain got so bad that I started being unable to stand for long periods of time. Within 30 minutes to an hour of standing my lower back, knees and feet would be on fire and the pain would continue the rest of the day unless I took medication. My stomache, hands and feet were constantly bloated and I had a puffy look all the time. Mind you, I'm not a big girl and have been fitting size 8 pants when I was normally size 4/6. I also felt occasional uncontrollable itching in my neck area, had frequent dizziness, felt sudden bouts of nauseea, night sweats, insomnia, and fairly often I got ugly acne on my chin/ neck area. ALL of this I attributed to getting older (I'm in my 40's) and to childbirth. Last year I got a bunch of tests done for my body aches and tested positive for rheumatoid arthritis. Also last year, I got my wonderful Mirena replaced. Within a week of getting my Mirena replaced I started noticing my hair falling out in clumps when I washed my hair. I normally lose a lot of hair BUT it felt like I had HEALTHY hair falling out. This had also happened the first time I had Mirena put in but I thought that my hair loss was due to recent childbirth. I starated keeping an eye on that and while some of it slowed, I still had unreasonable amounts of hair falling. I have LOTS of hair so I wasn't getting panicked and forgot about it. Recently my husband pointed out that my hair looks thinner. I went on line looking for vitamins and found stories from other ladies losing their hair and connecting it to Mirena. I then realized that my hair was thin enough so that you can almost see my scalp. Not too bad but definitely balding areas at my temples and top of my head. I also saw stories of ladies experiencing symptoms of pain and testing positive for RA. I went and got my beloved Mirena taken out that same week. The results so far???? I'm ONLY 5 weeks post removal and I LOST 6lbs water weight. The puffiness on my hands and feet that I had for 6 1/2 years?? GONE. The bloat in my stomache that made me look pregnant? GONE. My rings that I had expanded are spinning on my finger, I went down 1/2 a shoe size and my size 6 jeans are a bit loose. But MORE IMPORTANTLY ladies, the F'ING pain that I've been living with for over 6 years is almost GONE. I stood this morning for over 5 hours selling Girl Scout cookies and I felt ZERO pain and only slight discomfort after 5 hours. I tell you that I COULD NOT DO THIS 2 Months ago!!! I CANT BELIEVE that I stood on my feet all that time when that would have caused EXCRUCIATING pain in the past. I use to wonder how I would make it through events with my two kids and this morning was a breeze. The Mirena was doing a LOT of harm to my body And I'm so glad to have come across the blogs that I found in time. I even think I'm noticing new hair growing in the thinned out areas But it's too early to tell. One thing is for sure and its that I'm feeling GREAT physically and im so HAPPY for that!!!!! And before I go, I also slept through the night twice this week. Hopefully it's the start of somethinG permanent.
I shall now make another appointment....
Thank you ladies
