I also believe that a pap smear caused me to miscarry. I had one done at 6 weeks. It was extremely painful and after they removed the speculum, blood and fluid gushed out. It was horrendous!

At 11 weeks I miscarried. They told me the baby was about 6 weeks old...

Doesn't feel like coincidence to me. I would advise all preganant women to refuse a pap smear. Why take the risk?

Hi, it happened to me too.

I was happily pregnant before I went to do the test to confirm pregnancy and do the blood tests. The doctor insisted on pap smear and I really didn't want to do it, with my previous another doctor told me to do it straight after the pregnancy... She didn't take no for answer and I couldn't find any excuse so I did it. I believe she did it very badly as at the end it felt as she was almost tearing me! And couple of hours after home I start spotting, then bleeding, then some stuff came out ... Today I went to doctor and ultrasound and I still have the sack with not visible baby and bleeding didn't stopped. I didn't have any pain so it is probably gone but not whole. The doctors cannot tell me at the moment, depends on the pregnancy hormon test which I don't have the results yet.

I had miscariage before and it was different - sudden bleeding a lot and then cramping pain and the next day it was gone from the ultrasound. So I really thing it was because the pap smear test was done very badly...

I am not going to do it again in pregnancy no matter what the doctors say as if lots of people have similar experience no one without proper examination can say it is just bad timing....

Just yesterday I had a pap smear and miscarried the same night. I was 10weeks and 3 days. For the past week I had excess discharge no infections symptoms but it was uncomfortable, I understand it's normal hormonal changes but I wanted to be sure. They did a wet prep, also found a polyp. That night i started cramping and spotting, so I went to the ER, they confirmed sac is intact, no heart beat. Today I"m still bleeding and cramping. I"m very upset, I should've waited on the pap. This is my first miscarriage but my second pregnancy loss. We had a facial congenital anomaly with our 2nd boy and had to terminate at 25 weeks 6 years ago, we've been infertile since, after 2 years of fertility treatments i finally got pregnant and now to end like this. I"m 38. I know the odds are against me, but i feel as though it could've been prevented.

I had a miscarriage right after the prenatal exam I was perfect going in came out bleeding and 2 hours later ended up at the emergency lost the baby. I was told by a relative that is a physician was too early only 4 weeks just when baby is attaching to wall and Dr was incompetent, pap took forever and very painful . However in my next pregnancy I waited 9 weeks for prenatal exam it was quick not painful and all went well. It is your body and if you do not want pap they need to respect that decision.

This is my story...I was 12 weeks and 6 days. Now mind you, i have been bleeding since March 22nd. I have had so many ultra sounds and the baby was fine, doing the back stroke even. My OB recently went on MAT leave so her fill it was who I seen 2 days ago. He asked if i had a pap test done yet. I had many exams through out my pregnacy as i have been bleeding, and spotting....He did a pap test on me and a internal exam with his hands. I had my ultra sound today, and all that is there is a clot. No baby. I strongly believe that the dr caused me to lose the baby because up till that PAP and exam, the baby was fine and healthy. Now, Me, my fiancee and my 2 year old son who points at my belly and says "Baby in there" have to deal with this tragic loss. :(

I am going thru EXACTLY what you went thru and now I don't know what to do? I'm still Bleeding and in my 3rd day and my ob will not see me till 2 weeks later on Oct. 3rd. The nurse there kept saying its normal to spot /bleed after a pap smear. I'm so upset with them and I'm not exactly at an age where I can keep trying! If pregnant again, I will NOT get a pap smear until past 2 months! I can't believe this happened?! We've had 3 healthy boys in the past and NEVER had anything like this happen before!

I am absolutely devasted!!! We have been trying for 4 years to have a 4th child. We already have 3 healthy girls, all normal pregnancies and normal deliveries. I was 6 weeks pregnant and was given a pap smear. I spotted the same day and started bleeding the next day and for a week thereafter. I bled like I was having a normal period but I also had continuous cramping and I never have cramping during periods. I miscarried. I blame the pap smear since everything was normal. My doctor said there is no correlation but it sure seems like there have been a lot of women who've miscarried right after a pap smear. Since I am older, this may have been our last chance for a baby. If we are blessed to have another chance, there is no way I will have a pap smear until I'm at least 6 months pregnant.

I have a friend who is a doctor(endocrinologist not an OB/GYN but still a doctor) and she told me that in some women the microabrasions to the cevrix from PAPs trigger an inflammation response and when there is an inflammation our bodies will try to seek out whatever is causing it and will sometimes mkistake the baby as the cause thus rejecting the pregnancy and bringing unfathomable heartbreak to the family. personally i am FAR more inclined to believe my friend over and ob/gyn because she doesnt lose any profit from me refusing a PAP. I have not desired a child yet but when I do if any dr  suggests i have a PAP/pelvic for no reason (im hpv- w only one partner who was also a virgin) i will tell them to f*ck off

The same thing has just happened to me. I was 5 weeks pregnant and all was going well. I was experiencing thrush so the doctor performed a pap smear assuring me it could not harm the baby. After I got home, I started spotting and now today I have miscarried. At my age and under my personal circumstances, conceiving this baby was a miracle. I truly believe that the Pap smear / internal examination triggered this miscarriage and I am heartbroken. I do not understand how this is not a recognized risk factor by the medical profession.

My last pregnancy, after having three successful healthy pregnancies, sadly also ended with a miscarriage at about eight weeks. I had never correlated Pap smears with miscarriage because I believe I had them in every one of my pregnancies. But, this time I do believe the Pap smear was the sole cause. I had it done on a Friday morning, went home to relax before work and a couple hours later I start bleeding bright red blood. I went to the emergency room where they did an on the spot ultrasound. The doctor showed me the heartbeat and said everything seemed ok, but couldn't explain the bleeding. On my way home from the emergency room I started having severe abdominal cramps, when I got home I passed large clumps and then the bleeding lightened over the next two days. Monday I had another ultrasound and there was no traces of pregnancy left. over the course of a few hours I went from completely normal to bleeding to seeing the heartbeat to miscarriage directly after a Pap smear. Maybe there is no scientific proof and it obviously doesn't happen to everybody or in every pregnancy one person has, but from my own experience, it does happen. Just because it has never happened to you, to think it is not possible and every time is a coincidence is ignorance at it's finest

Yes I also had a miscarriage after a pap smear I had done last week. I'm so upset and frustrated I can't believe this happen after trying for 2 years to get pregnant. I went to the doctor for a routine checkup and I was about 5 to 6 weeks and that same night I ended up in the emergency room when a threaten miscarriage. Now I have no baby and a broken heart.
