I had the same thing happen to me just last week. I was having light bleeding at 8 weeks pregnant no cramping or pain at all. I went to the ER late Tuesday night and they did an ultrasound which showed that the pregnancy was normal and the baby was ok, heartbeat and all. I was told to follow-up with my OB 48hrs later which I did that Friday. He insisted on doing a pap smear and pelvic exam. 2 hrs later I began cramping, it got progressively worst that I spent all day in bed Saturday. By Saturday night my light bleeding was now a gusher. After a particularly brutal bout of cramping a passed out the egg sac and my worst fear was realized. There is no doubt in my mind that the pap smear and pelvic exam caused my miscarriage, absolutely none.

Pregnancy is a good time where a woman is expecting and will become a mother after 9 months duration. But during pregnancy the main problem or the main concern during this period is “Miscarriage”.

I wish I could read your story before my pap was done. I was 11 wk pregnant, went for pap and next day I miscarriage.
I really do not know whether it is because of pap or something else. As a mother I could only corelate it with pap.

The first time I found out I was pregnant, my husband and I were shocked and excited. Everything was normal, no bleeding or cramping. I went in for my first prenatal visit at about 10.5 weeks and they did a pap smear. Just a couple days later I started having the brown spotting. I called my doctor and was told this was normal. The next day I didn't feel right, so my husband took me to the emergency room. The did an ultrasound and confirmed there was no heartbeat. I was completely devastated. I had no issues prior to the appointment... I got pregnant again 2 months later. This time they didn't do a pap smear at my first visit because I had a recent one. I had a healthy baby boy. I am now pregnant again, about 5 weeks and I will be refusing the pap smear at my first visit. I'm not taking any chances with this one.

The baby can stop growing and you do not immediately miscarry. This is called a missed miscarriage. for some reason the body just does not recognize its not a viable pregnancy. I know because it happened to me. The baby stopped growing only a couple weeks after conception but I did not miss carry until around 11 weeks. I have had 3 normal pregnancy's and birth and had pap smears with all and I had no problems. I don't believe a pap smear has anything to do with misscarriages. I think when it happened it was just coincidental. Most likely the pregnancys were not viable to begin with.

I too was pregnant for the first time and volunteered for a pap since I was due for one. It seemed liked the Dr was really rough with the swab or spatula. The next day I started to spot and it didn't stop until it escalated into heavy bleeding and a miscarriage.

Every women and every pregnancy is different. I think it's safe to say it is at least POSSIBLE a Pap smear and miscarriages are linked. Possibly. Depending on the women and the pregnancy.

I agree! I had a Pap smear done on Wed. I wish I had stopped them, because I told them I thought I was pregnant. But they did a pregnancy test after the exam. The pregnancy test was positive, and they calculated me as 7wks, 5 days. Now, it's Friday, and I'm bleeding bright, red blood. SO UPSET! I wish I'd never gone to that damn doctor's appointment! They just did a Pap smear last year, as I gave birth to a baby 7 months ago. WTF?! I'm NEVER doing another Pap smear during pregnancy again!! PAP SMEARS CAUSE MISCARRIAGES!!! :(

I'm hoping this isn't the end of my pregnancy but I am worried it is. Here is my story: I was feeling nausea and I had vomited on Aug 15th. I just felt a bit strange and colder than usual which is how I feel when I am pregnant (I have a healthy, beautiful 2 and a half year old). I took a pregnancy test on Aug. 18th which showed I was pregnant. It was a digital test. I called a new OB/GYn I had seen a month prior because my period was late last month but I was getting negative preg. tests to check my hormone levels. I called the office to get my results and added that I had a positive test and is it too soon to come? Maybe I need to wait until a heartbeat can be seen etc..? They said come because we can check your blood. I came, (Appt was 11;30) and they asked me to pee in a dixie cup and leave it in the bathroom. Well, more people used the bathroom and they finally got my cup like 20 minutes after and did their urine test which was inconclusive. So he did the pap which literally felt like a knife inside me and was sooo painful, moreso than any pap I had gotten before...they did a sonogram but it wasn't vaginal, it was abdominal. According to the first day of my last menstrual period which was July 13th, I was 5 weeks, 5 days at this time but I think I was earlier because my period lasted for 7 days and I ovulated later? The sonogram was also not here, not there...so they took blood. The blood was picked up late in the day and delivered late to the lab. It took an extra day for my results to come (again either bad luck or unprofessional office). I came home, had a bit of spotting but felt OK but a little bit off...I went for a walk...later in the afternoon I started bleeding. Light at first, then it got heavier. The appt, was for Aug 22nd. I am still bleeding but it got lighter. I had clots and minor cramping. I called the office, no one got back to me,,,so yesterday I walked in with my girl asking for my medical records so I could take them to a hospital if need be... Doctor finally calls and says my levels were a bit low (140) and from what I am describing, it sounds like a miscarrage. I should recheck my blood levels in 2 weeks...to see if they go back to zero. Thanks for reading. I hope my story helps someone to say no. I wasn't even due for a pap. The new guidelines are 3 to 5 years, 5 if you are neg. for HPV. So sad! I am really praying that this baby is still OK!

I want to add that I did a bit of research and some of the tools that use come with a warning from the manufacturer not to use them if the patient is pregnant! I'm outraged! Its a tragedy. :(
