I have read many of these blogs and it seems like the constant phlegm in the throat can be caused by a few different things. My allergist placed me on Xyzal and Nasonex about 5 years ago and I was feeling really well. Back in April 2008, I stopped taking my medication because I was sick of getting up every morning taking a pill and using nosespray. Within a few weeks, the constant phlegm in my throat began. I have tried Acephex and Nexium and still had phlegm. I stopped taking my blood pressure medication ( Exforge ) and still had phlegm. I have tried altering my diet ( no caffeine, no milk products, reducing acidic foods ) and still have phlegm. I have increased my water intake to no avail. I am going back to my allergist today and asking for Xyzal and Nasonex and hopefully my phlegm problem will be cured !!!!

I have the same problem. I got a cold/flu on a trip to CA. 40 yr. old daughter got sick too. I took amoxicillin for 10 days. Still sick when returned home...so when to asthma doc who prescribed Z pack (zithromycian) and prednisone. Still have cough with some mucus coming up. Throat feels like something is always in it. Hard to talk without it causing a cough. I noticed when I push in the muscles either side of my throat of the esophagus, I feel relief. This leads me to believe it is esophogeal reflux. I live in New Orleans and there is a LOT OF MOLD HERE. Houses that haven't been gutted for 5 years. Don't know if that is contributing, but it may be.

Take Symbicort 2x day. I noticed the steriods (Symbicort & prednisone) cause a thrush on my tongue. I really feel it is a combination of steriodal use (causes fungus in throat) and esophogeal reflux.

So, I'm going to start taking apple cider vinegar with hot water (for fungus & mucus) and also garlic (for fungus) and I know I should avoid sugar, but I just had some lemon sorbet from Brocato's and it's kind of amazing, 'cause I don't have the lumpy feeling in my throat nor the mucus. I may continue with the sorbet, but very limited amounts.

Anyway, hope this helps. I'm trying everything I can to help this condition. I may even move to the West Coast - Berkeley where the air is better.

OMG, Has anyone been able to answer any of these posts? I have just joined this forum and posted a similar question.

I feel at times I am going insane, I cannot sleep and therefore have very little energy (I'm like the walking dead!) I live on about 2 hours sleep a night, Dr's are convinced that I just need anti depressants or Asthma inhalers!

I am up all night blowing my nose, sniffing Olbas, inhaling Nasal spays, coughing up mucus, not good for my poor husband either, he needs to sleep in spare room!!

I have not been pregnant for 14 years so I no it's not connected to that.
I have booked an appointment with a Herbal Nutritianist for tomorrow morning and hoping she can come up with some thing.

I haven't been able to work for past 6 months due to lack of sleep, I am gaining wieght although I eat a relatively good diet and I exersice 4 times a week. My confidence has hit rock bottom and I feel like I cant breath for most of the time.

I am now starting to have panic attacks due to now being able to breath as I am now having the symptoms all day.

Please if any one has any results from anything other than salt pots, steam, or asthma inhalers please let me know. (as these ideas have not worked on me)

hi...I too have throat mucus resulting in a chronic cough, usually in the morning and especially with cold air.  I've had it for about 2 years now.  Was convinced I had COPD but testing today confirmed that it wasn't.  My doctor believes that this is a mild case of acid reflux.  I don't have heart burn but my coughing almost gags me in the morning.  No phlegm from the lungs just the throat.  So he put me on Ranitidine (Zantac) twice a day and I have been cough free for almost 6 days!  It took about 2 days to work but I have no cough even in the morning in cold air.  You might want to ask about that.  Hope this helps.

one of the most irritating things about it to me is the horrible semi-gagging intense throat clearing i often go thru in the morning trying to cough up excess mucus.  it often results in unpleasant gagging and disgusted comments from family members who have to hear it all.

I have same thing as well. Tried all the over the counter allergy medications....etc. Keep clearing my throat....drives me and other's crazy...worse at night....like mucus is running down the back of my throat...then occasionally...like asthma symptoms...just hard to breathe. Taking 1000mgs of C gives some relief to the problem...but i have to take it every night. I have had the problem for 15 years. With this many people having this problem....seems like Web MD should be notified and research put into this problem. I know once....when I decided to do a marathon....with that much exercise it went away for a few months.

This is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. In June 2011 I developed a respiratory infection. Unusual for that time of year. I generally get bronchitis in late Fall but never sick in the summer. I had 3 rounds of antibiotics and 3 rounds of prednisone. After that I developed this throat mucus and gagging in the morning - also very lethargic and feeling sick. I have been to my regular doctor and Urgent Care 3 times with the respiratory thing-they recommended a pulmonologist. One was recommended by a friend who works in cardiac ICU. Dr C is wonderful-but she diagnosed me with asthma which I started in with these inhalers with more prednisone and a nebulizer. NOTHING worked and it got worse. I have had 2 cat scans, xrays, massive blood work on and on-nothing. Yesterday I had a bronchoscopy-nothing-she said everything was perfect yet I have a glob of mucus in my throat and makes me gag and vomit to the point of pain in my chest. Now she is recommending a speech therapist to deal with my vocal cords ??? I am totally stressed out and feel like my life is over. I am 63 years old and want to work 2 1/2 more years but at this rate I can barely make it. There is one thing that has worked, and this is NO CURE and not a good thing. I was on Tramadol (Ultram) for my back 2 years ago. When the pain from gagging was so bad, I took one 50 mg and it almost took all the mucus and gave me enough energy to go to work. The stress now is coming from having to take this to go to work because it is not fixing the problem. I truly 100% believe at least in my case, the prednisone and antibiotics have EVERYTHING to do with this. WHY can't they figure this out and help us? It is terrible and with the supposed new health care whatever I feel doomed. I feel for all of you out there with this illness and I am praying for all of us everyday. Thank you for letting me tell my story.

I know everyone here is frustrated. It's a frustrating thing, however acceptance is the first step To ease the suffering - the more resistance the more suffering. Now on to the answer: 90% of these complaints are directly related to Candida which develops over time due to a number of factors including diet (complex carbs, antibiotic laden meat, tap water etc.) antibiotic use, steroid use, use of anti-bacterial soaps, exposure to radiation (TV's, cell phones, computers, radon etc.) Some of these factors are more powerful in converting candida into its fungal form like antibiotics however when we consider decades of this onslaught of factors we invite candida into our lives to varying degree's. Western society is breaking down the human immune system by the unhealthy enviornments being perpetuated by unchecked capitalism and lack of knowledge. There are hundreds of these forums outlining the same issue with no answers accept vague suggestions. Also keep in mind that candida also causes hidden food allergies which exacerbate symptoms. The answer is extremely complex but requires a complete change of lifestyle. Take a look at the McCombs plan, you don't necessarily sign up for it but it's a good starting point for the direction you need to go. I did it for three months and could tell a difference, when I stopped though and went back to old habits it comes back so it's a game of real discipline and commitment. However once you follow the game plan you can always step off to treat yourself in moderation. Some quick advice: 1. Drink lots of water following the formula based on your body wieght not just 8 - 8oz glasses. 2. Sauna, Steam Room or Hot bath 5-6 days a week. 3. Coconut Oil by spoon clears the throat up quite well, but use every two weeks then stop for a week, read more online about this. 4. Diet - no sugars, breads, wheat, aspartame, sauces etc. Read the McCombs protocol for Candida diet. Stevia and Xylitol are great substitutes for sugar. 5. Stress reduction - exercise, meditation, yoga atleast 3-4 times a week. Our "pleasure island" society always relays on the magic pill to relieve us of health disruptions on our lives but more and more people are discovering that this is a fantasy. Remember, acceptance eases suffering, the more you resist the more pain and stress you'll bring upon yourself. Good luck, your not alone in the problem or the solution.

This is something you could try, it helps me to sleep without waking with a dry throat and blocked breathing.

Lying on your side, with the arm that you are lying on, bend it at the elbow and have the palm in front of your face, but not touching it, this will keep your sinuses moist and able to work better.

On the above post I should have said palm of your hand not just palm.

I wanted to elaborate on my previous post: Lets simplify things, mucus is the bodys way of clearing pathogens from the body, it also is produced in response to inflammation to promote healing. However in the case of Candida this process repeats itself until the root issue is resolved. A simple way i have found to narrow down whether it is GERD, Allergies or Candida is to ask yourself if these symptoms (especially the throat mucus) bothers you while you sleep. Both GERD and Allergies persist during testing hours - Candida issues tend to subside, which is why medications addressing these issues never work. Another way to assist in proper diagnosis is to take the Candida questionnaire found online (use the official extended one, never use one trying to sell you something). There is also the spit test but the accuracy of this test is debatable. I have dealt with these issues on and off for 4 years and i understand tge pain, suffering, depression and helplessness that accompanies this. Doctors seem indifferent, often times writing you off as a hypo. But negativity in this situation is the worst thibg you could do. As I said before the McCombs plan is a good place to start however the actual plan itself is like $500. However you don't need to spend all of that money, just follow the diet and protocol and buy your own supplements. You may want to check out his book - life force, I think it's like $10.00 it explains everything or you can simply go to hiss website, do the research and get the info for free. The difference between his plan and most of the other plans you'll see is that instead of trying to simply kill the fungus (which is very difficult) his plan is to convert Candida back to its yeast form where it is beneficial for your immune system. Don't take my word for it, do your due diligence. Be weary of people selling you things that they claim will magically make this problem dissappear, it's not that simple. Here's a cheat sheet of resources. Remember that any supplements will not work if you don't use them right and change your lifestyle.

I have my mucus in throat fixed.
My condition appeared half year ago.  I have a cold, I used Amoxilin anitbiotic.  Then I the cough and mucus didn't go away.  I had some cough duriing the day.  Someday had alot of mucus, sometime not.  The mucus is white and bubbling, not yellowish, so, nothing wrong with the lung.  But whenever I laid down, the mucus and cough came up.   It satured 50% after 5 months, then another antibiotic brought it all back.
Tried few things and at last.....
I have been given Turbuhaler from Symbicort, and the mucus and cough was gone on the same night(for two weeks now), like magic.
I had two puff right before bed (like 1 mins before bed).
It works on me, may not work on everybody.
Good luck on finding your cure.
