I am an aunt to two beautiful kids whom I now have custody of them both. They spent almost two years in a foster home 3 states away from us. The boy is 5 and the girl is 3. It took that long for that state to give up on the parents. The social workers in their state told us that they both were special needs children. We still however went and got them and the moment I saw them I was in love. These are my brothers children and they were born addicted to everything especially the girl who was taken at birth. They removed the boy at the same time the girl tested positive. She had opiates and several other things in her system. The boy had several issues. He had poor muscle control. He was almost 4 and was not potty trained. Didn't even know what a potty was. He was all over the place and hyper not to mention fell all over the place because of poor muscle control. He is interesting though because he was so so very smart talked 100 miles a minute and is so very loving. I took him to the neurologist and he said add and of course shouted drugs! I don't believe in medicating a child especially who was born with an addicted start. one night I just sat in his room and watched him sleep. I prayed and an over whelming comfort came over me. We started physical therapy... I had him potty trained in less then a month. he graduated from physical therapy in a year and now a child who couldn't run, balance, jump, climb like a normal 4 year old now can do it all. Come to find out the foster parents that had him were so focused on what could be wrong with him that they didn't even give him a shot. He had never been to a park, he had never been in publics eye other then school his last few months and they locked him in a room when they were tired of him. He didn't get to eat with the family. On his first day there a baby who at the time not two yet and always slept with his parents was thrown in a dark room in a port a crib which he slept in for almost 2 years. I have had him for 1 and a half years. He is so smart! He can right his name.. He has slowed down tremendously though he still talks a lot it isn't near as bad. He actually gets attention and he is loved very much.. It is amazing what happens when they are given a chance... His little sister was in the hospital for quit some time. She had several blood transfusions in her first few months of life and suffered trimmers up until 6 months after I got her. They were not bad by the time I got her. She also has muscle delays for the same reasons as her brother. She is a little hyper but I do not know a lot of three year old children that are not. She to has an extremely good vocabulary like her brother and she is very, very smart. I have learned that if you look for something to be wrong and put them under a magnify glass and treat them as such they may think in their own minds there is something wrong along with anyone you tell your story to. Their first teacher I told the whole story to and every day there was a complaint and so much negativity. I chose not to tell the next teacher right away and they were treated like the other "NORMAL" kids. They grew to be more normal! I think the foster home wanted something to be wrong because they honestly get a bigger check for special needs kids. when they took him to the dr to be looked over all they said was wrong was that he had post traumatic stress syndrome! Imagine that. Love them... treat them like they are normal... and pray... Not saying nothing will pop up eventually because it could but they have been an amazing addition to our family.
Good luck to you
move forward and make a better life for them

Hello i would love to chime in on this, i have had 4 babies not on the program and 1 baby i was on methodone and with this pregnacy i am also on methodone, my 2 1/2 yr old daughter was born addicted, but methodone was the only thing i was taking... she did have to stay in the hosptial for withdrawl however she is not a sick child, nor is she hard to handle.. when i first brought her home she was a lil cranky but today she is a very smart and healthy toddler.. and no dcf never took her away from me as she had no other drugs in her system.. she is not hard to handle and is mommys lil sunshine girl!! And with this baby im currently prego with i am also only taking methodone and nothing else.. sometimes she can have an attitude problem but cant all toddlers? Lol and besides me and her biological father are both bi-polar.. so im sure that plays in alot... she never had any sleep problems and is def not hyper.. i hope this helps anybody with any questions

"If you are so worried about your child and side effects, dont have the child."
I assume this sentence means you are pro-choice. In which case, you should know better than to tell a woman that she should not have had her child. It is HER CHOICE. not yours or anyone else's.

I guess the question is is there any medical proof saying that methadone causes any long term disabilities, and do you think are doctor has any right to say methadone is what has most likley caused his autisim, which is why we had him tested for, her diagnosis was not autisim, but defenate behavior issues, we had 3 doctors assure us there is no reason your child will not be totaly healthy, so if there is no direct proof methadone causes behavious issues our doctor who had him tested is way out of line bringing methadone up at all, am i right???

Please do not pay añy mind to anyone who would make such rude remarks about not having ur son!!! That person is sick.. u as a concerned mom have every right to worry and ask any questions you may have bout your child.. to answer your questions properly, i would say no medication is 100% safe during pregnacy... however methodone is so much safer then other meds or even herion.. i dnt knw ur situation or y u became on methodone. I have a child who is almost 3 and she is fine she wàs a method9ne baby.. and then i have a swhois autisic while i took nothing being prego. Its all in the genetic make up of ur child.. i would say methodone is not 5he cause. And good for u for being concerned..

The lady I babysit for her son is now 5 and she was taking percocets and meth when he was born and he has major behavior issues, he's adhd and he has anger issues. Confirmed with the doctor at his last appoint he did say that these issue are effects from the mother being on meth and Percocet. Sad part is she has a 9 month old and a baby on the way but shes not on meth anymore just percocets.

I too, have a newborn granddaughter; addicted to methadone; still in NICU; now for almost seven weeks. I appreciate your sharing of experiences. If the mother is unable to get her addiction under control, I plan on bringing this child into my home. I believe I am more patient now, than when I was raising my two boys. I also would like to commend you on the statement about "never walked in your shoes". I am not here to judge anyone. I don't know what it's like to live your life, bringing you to the point of doing heroine I feel bad for anyone who's life was so ... whatever it was to drive you to do heroine. I'd like to ask you a couple of questions, if I may? When it was introduced to you, what happened to the thought of, "this is a powerful, addictive drug. Do I really want to spend the rest of my life addicted to a drug that controls my every thought and action" ? Or did you not have that thought? Guess I had too many plans for the future and I didn't want to be a zombie. Did you ever look at someone who had been on heroine for any long period of time, before you tried it? I was introduced to a man one time, when I was about 12 years old, who was only 28, but who had been on heroine for three years. He looked to me old before his time and had sores all over his face. Guess maybe that's what kept me from "trying it just once", when it was introduced to me as a young adult. I was lied to, and told, "it won't hurt you to try it ONE time". So on second thought, guess it can play a good part. It turned me against EVER trying it. Actually, I'd like to gather some information from anyone who might like to talk about what they believe may have led them to going against their better judgment and "trying it anyway".
