FOR THOSE OF YOU ABOUT TO HAVE SURGERY:
Here are my tips that have worked wonders for me!! OH and FYI you'll probably feel ok on day one and two - DON'T BE FOOLED it's those glorious pain meds that have you fooled. REST! Because I didn't and it came back and bit me in the butt!
1) KEEP HYDRATED - this is so freaking important!!!! if you don't stay hydrated it makes the pain worse! The best thing I found was drinking DILUTED gatorade (half gatorade, half water) it doesn't burn as much and you get to keep some of the electrolytes
2)Chew on Ice chips and Use an Ice pack on your neck - this keeps everything numb and helps with the swelling of your tongue and uvula not to mention helps with your ear pain for some reason.... I would recommend putting ice in the blender and getting it to where it's sort of snow cone texture - it makes it easier to swallow
3)No popsicles! - but those ice pops they give at the hospital are amazing and cheap!! it's flavored ice so it helps
4) Ice Cream - the best solution i came up with was this - my boyfriend bought me neopolitan (sp?) so I could have the best of all three worlds BUT it was hard to eat so I mixed it all together so it resembles a frosty-ish sort of texture and it is SO good and easy to swallow! and oh man did it help with the swelling and numbing!
5) Chew gum - some people say this is good cause it works the muscles our that aren't being used, however, I warn you, you will be sore.
6) Mashed Potatoes - ok here is what i discovered - they need to be WHIPPED VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY WELL otherwise it's hell to eat them. If you're going to make them yourself use milk and lots of butter and make them in a mixer to get them well mixed but DO NOT keep the skin on them! that stuff hurts to swallow. If you want to just go the easy route and buy them CHURCH'S CHICKEN has the BEST ones! They are soooo smooth and really easy to swallow, I definitely recommend those!
7)NO HOT STUFF UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES!! - try and eat everything cold, even lukewarm stuff can have a negative effect
Like I said I'm only on day four so that's what's worked for me so far :-D
