Although there are no real answers posted here as to the cause/solution for this numbness, just knowing that I'm not only one with this odd side effect is comfort enough. I too am experiencing transient numbness the size of a golf ball on my upper right abdomin above the uterus at 28 weeks. I'll check with the doctor at my appointment this Friday, but what a relief knowing I'm not the only one!

I have had the same thing for the past couple weeks and I am now nearly 36 weeks pregnant. My doctor's office indicated the soreness beneath my bra and above my bellow is likely a bruised rib from the pressure placed on the area by my growing uterus and the baby's movements (he/she is VERY active!). They explained the numbness is a result of decreased blood flow to the area as everything is getting pushed and squeezed, including my diaphragm which explains why it's also so difficult to breathe especially when laying on the affected side. The important thing is that they said it's totally normal and happens often. Nothing to worry about!

Thank goodness, I'm not going crazy!! I am 33 weeks and this have been going on for at least a month if not more. Its gradually getting worse. This is the most information I have found on this topic. I have found that putting pressure on the area with my hand helps a little bit. The burning has just gotten unbearable. My Dr. said it was from my ribs pushing up my stomach and there is nothing I can do. I feel like its more of a nerve issue than anything. Thank you all for you postings it has really assured me that I'll be ok.

I am pretty petite and have not gained much weight. I am ALL belly. Is that they same with the rest of you? I just wonder if it only happens to short/thin women, just because there is not as much room. Just a thought?

Thanks
Nicole

I began to feel the numbness at 33 weeks. It has turned into a burning sensation. This concern prompted my dr. to measure my belly, which showed I was measuring at 38 weeks - much larger than I should have been. This prompted an ultrasound which demonstrated elevated fluid levels - 32 was the measurement which put me into the 95th percentile.
The numbness is due to stretching and the nerve endings moving further apart from each other creating spaces of numbness.

In my case, the elevated fluid is due to the fact that the baby has a duodenal atresia, which is a blocked passage of the intestive. It showed up on thh ultrasound and we are grateful to know early so that dr.'s are prepared for the surgery to repair that portion of the baby's intestine. This situation is rare. 1 in 10,000.

I am 25 weeks pregnant. About a week ago the right side of my belly started to go numb. Within a week the numb like sensation has spread to the right side of my back and down my right leg all the way to the toes. It not completely numb but my skin had the num sensation and it is making me nervous. My baby moves all day long so I’m not sure if I should be freaking out. I see my perinatologist on Friday and will ask him but wanted to know if I was alone. I have no burning for rash like sensations at all. Help this is my 1st pregnancy and I am scared out of my mind.

I am so glad that I found this site! I have been looking up information on this for the past week and a half and haven't been able to find much. This makes me feel so much better to have lots of other people feeling the same thing. I am 32 weeks pregnant and have been having a tingling sensation under my right breast/upper abdomen for the past week and a half. I mentioned it to my OB and she said that it's probably just something being compressed. When I sit up straight, stretch out a bit, or put pressure on the area with my hand, it usually goes away. It's been coming on more frequently, but probably because I am getting bigger and more stuff is getting compressed or stretched out. I also feel like I have grown more rapidly in the past couple of weeks, which could explain why it's coming on now. The nerves are probably being stretched or compressed more than they are able to keep up with! Thanks again for all of the posts! I'm just glad I'm not alone with this.

I too, am so glad to have found this site! I am 34 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing the same pain that everyone is describing. It's under my left breast onto my stomach and it burns, itches, and feels numb. After reading all these posts, I feel much better about what I am feeling. This is my second baby and I didn't feel this with her. My stomach seems to be much bigger this time around though. So nice to know, I'm not going crazy! I will still mention it at my next Dr.'s appt. Thanks everyone!

I have also had the same feeling mine is on the upper part of my stomach all the way to my lower chest. I first noticed it around week 21 and it has only gotten worse. I am now at week 32. However, I have two ruptured disks my L4 and L5. They all said that they think that it is caused by the swelling/weight gain of my preganancy pushing agains nerves. They said in cases where there are previous back problems it can be a lot more painfull (the sharp stabbing sensation) and they said in women who don't have any back problems it often only is on part of the stomach instead of covering a very large portion like mine... It may not be the same for everyone but it really helped me out knowing it was kinda normal thing.

Hi, I'm only 4-5 weeks at most, but I honestly believe I'm only two weeks along... (I won't have health insurance until the beginning of January, so I can't make an appointment to know for sure. And yes, I seem to produce a lot of pregnancy hormones because I tested positive so early and felt other symptoms within just a few days...)

Anyways, I'm experiencing the same phenomena on my right side from the top of my hip up to the bottom of my right breast. It also goes from my belly button and wraps around my side, but doesn't quite extend to the back. It's a rather large area... Sometimes it switches to my left, but it's almost always the right side that goes numb.

It's like a cooling numb sensation. It comes and goes; sometimes lingering for hours, and other times only for a few minutes. I can't explain why.... What I do know though, is the longer it lasts the more of a tingling feeling develops which later turns to pins and needles, then sometimes itching. I haven't felt any burning yet, and don't know if I will or not.

I could understand previous statements about the baby pushing on nerves or that the rib cage is simply expanding to accommodate the baby, but I'm so early that there really isn't an explanation for me. I don't know what to think or what to do. I'm scared that this could be the sign of something more serious, but I really hope not... I just want my baby to be healthy.

If anyone could shed any light on the situation, I'd be extremely grateful.

Hi, I am 30 weeks and have been having this numbness and pain under my right boob for about 3 weeks. Everyone keeps telling me its indigestion, but I don't think it is. I went to the hospital and they checked my liver function because they were worried - pain in your upper right ab can be probs with your liver. My results were fine and they couldn't work out what it was. I have brought new bras to see if they were the issue, but it has made no difference. This forum is great as I can see i'm not the only one and it's probably just stretching. Hope all your pains go away soon!

I am 32 weeks tomorrow... and also have been feeling this under my right breast. Doctor tells me that it is streching nerves. I guess that makes me feel better than not knowing the cause. I have not been able to find any relief as the pain gets pretty bad at times... it has brought me to tears more than once. I was also told this is very common with your first pregnancy. I would suggest talking in detail with your doctor.. if you are feeling this with a second or third child... knowing I only have 9 weeks to go... gets me through it :-))

28 weeks pregnant with my first kid, been having the pain under the right breast and around my right shoulderblade/lats for about a month now. It has steadily increased, and sometimes is so sharp it makes me feel nauseous and dizzy. Two days ago, the area described by everyone else (a 6 inch long by 4 inch wide patch under my right breast) went numb. Feels like a visit to the dentist numb.

I have had an abdominal ultrasound and ruled out gall bladder, kidney, pancreas, or liver issues, so that is good news for me and all those out there with the same symptoms! :-) The previous posts about nerves stretching make a lot of sense, and it is indeed comforting to know that this is not some isolated thing that is only wrong with me.

What makes it feel better for me is to stretch out on my left side or on my back, really stretch the area. (It seems to be worst when sitting upright). Not sure who I am going to handle 2.5 more months of this though... it's pretty rough. :'(
