OK.. Had this problem for about 10 years now. When i was 9 or 10 i had my first kidney infection, and if youve ever had one you know how painful they are! When i come down with one i have all the symptoms...excruisiating pain in my kidneys to where i can barely move, naseau, fever, pain when urinating...all the uti symptoms....even peeing blood to where its BOLD red. I've had 2 surgeries to widen my urethra because they thought that i might be having reflux when i urinate which will infect the kidneys. The tricky part...The infections dont usually show up in my urinalysis until they are really bad....the kidneys get infected first...which can cause the bladder infection or uti. I have the same problem though constantly, even when i dont have an infection, my bladder has constant pain or irritation, i feel like i always have to pee, and its usually worse after sex or if i dont stay hydrated. My guess..theres minor damage to the urethra from the previous infections or it may have something to do with the kidneys. If youve ever felt an internal flank pain on the lower left or right sides of the back, go check it out. My doctor put me on meds that i took frequently for 2 years and just re-prescribed them to me to take as needed after i was hospitalized for 4 days because of a sever infection. The pills seem to help.

I am wanting to know why you cut "out" the cranberry juice and why it helped when you did? I keep being told that cranberry juice is great for those who suffer with bladder infections/issues (even Dr. Oz recommended it), so I drink it often and even take cranberry pills, but still I have issues off and on continually. I'm wondering, is cranberry juice acidy?

Does anyone's stomach swell up & bloat, whenever they have discomfort in their bladder? I've been tested and apparently have no infection but continually battle with my bladder and the discomfort. It doesn't burn when I urinate but I have to visit the bathroom alot and I always do empty my bladder! My bladder often feels sensitive, sore, sick even when it's touchy. I also always have to drink alot of water, all day long, every day, or I get real dry in my mouth and can become sore in my bladder.

I'm up 3 to 5 times each night having to go and my bladder feels real sore, from I guess holding it as I'm sleeping. Some days I can't sit too long or it will aggravate my bladder, nor can I stand too long as the pressure from standing can make me sore. And days when my bladder is touchy or bloated I have to wear extremely lose pants, nothing pressing on my stomach or the discomfort in my bladder will increase. I sometimes also get chills with this, I'm always cold, or even feverish at times. Also, sometimes I get a sicky headache along with this.

I do have to get my urethra stretched every 2 to 3 years as it's not wide enough and so my bladder can't empty all the urine as it should and bacteria builds up, which causes infections. I may be due again and hopefully this is what's causing my bladder issues this time. But last year at the same time in December, ironically, I had the very same thing, a bladder infection (or so I think it was?) and the antibiotics I was prescribed didn't work and I had the bladder pain for a very long time before it finally left. But I did go see the specialist and he checked my urethra and it didn't need stretching yet, so that wasn't what was causing my bladder issues, and it may not be this time either. This year my bladder issue is worse, it's not going away as quickly as last year. Some days are good, some are not!

I'm new here and this is very discouraging reading all these posts and no one finding an answer to this problem. Praying for God to give us an answer and a cure for our problem!

It's such a relief to see others with this symptoms (not that I wish this suffering on you all of course)

I am a 26 year old female and had a bad kidney infection in September 2010. Since then I've had almost no relief from the symptoms that have been described above - pain & discomfort around the uretha, a stinging sensation and a constant feeling that I need to pee.

I've been to the Urologist and had an ultrasound which showed nothing. I am booked for a Cystoscopy later this month.

Is it a very uncomfortable procedure? I'm quite frightened of it.

in response to the cranberry juice, it's because if you are suffering with IC as a result from a previous UTI infection it can cause a flare up.

This isn't a thread for people who are needing to get their urethra stretched as they cannot empty their bladder. This is for people who are experiencing the debilitating symptoms of a UTI infection with no answer as to why.

if you have read my previous post i have now been on the IC diet (mainly no caffeine, chocolate, soda drinks, alcohol and spicy foods) for a month now and WOW what a difference. i recommend everyone who is suffering to try it for 2 months, what do you have to loose? i will mention again that i have never been tested or diagnosed with IC but strongly believe that this is the cause of my pain, together with herbal Chinese medication and a special diet i AM going to beat this and you can too.

if you notice your symptoms getting worse during ovulation and a week before your menstrual period, please tell me if the diet has made the symptoms better. my pain was a 7/10 during these times and now it's only a 3, next month i hope for it to be better again.

UROLOGISTS!!! seems like 80% of people on here have given up 100's of dollars for nothing, it's your body, your health and your life, do not put all your faith into someone else to find a cure. become proactive yourself and take control, you don't need a diagnosis to change the foods you put into your body, there is a list of bladder irritant foods on the IC website....just try it for 2 months.

wouldn't it be great to start seeing some positive outcomes, for ladies out there suffering the same way you are and getting results.

Huh, odd, that's the first I've seen mention of ovulation and week before period. Yes indeed, almost every month I get the urethra/bladder pain and feeling of having to pee. Sucks! I don't drink much caffeind (1 cup 1/2 decaf everday), I don't drink soda, and my chocolate intake is generally not alot. Nor do I drink much alcohol. However, when I DO drink alcohol, it definitely worsens. As does eating pineapple and sometimes taking a lot of chewable vitamin C. Anyway, don't kow what else I can change during week prior to period. And frankly, I am afraid to start having sex again. Last time I ended up in hospital with what they thought was a kidney stone, though they found no evidence of that (just my chills, vomiting, severe pain and lots of blood in my urine. More blood than urine). Not conducive to an active sex life :-(.

Very simply. you get rid of all those things mentioned above from your diet.

if you have 1 cup of decaffeinated coffee a day you will notice having symptoms. during a flare up it's easy to get depressed and turn to comfort food ie choc, hot drinks etc...you just can't do this you will exasperate the symptoms making them so much worse.

chewable Vit C....that is HIGHLY acidic, the point is to make your diet full alkaline, you don't want acid in your bladder as this causes the pain.

if you wrote down when you have pain and when you don't by keeping a bladder diary you will notice that pain gets worse around day 10 (give or take a couple of days) and the week before menstruating. This is due to hormones, our hormones make the symptoms worse but i can assure you these times can be more bearable if you stick to a couple of rules.

I'm not telling people what they should do and what they shouldn't. but as far as i can tell there are only 3 people on here with answers of help, right now this is working for me and also working for A LOT of other people too.

Bladder diary starts at number one on the first day of your period you should have a date column, signs and symptoms column and a rating column (your pain out of 10). by filling it out for a couple of months you can see what is making symptoms worse and if trying this diet STRICTLY, is it helping.

don't forget to leave feedback on any other help or people that are coping with the pain in other ways.

I'm 15 years old and have been having the same problem for months. Around halloween I was prescribed antibiotics for a UTI and then a month later. The swelling seems to have gone away. But I have constant pain that comes and goes. It'll be really horrible one day then almost gone the next. I go days without it sometimes, and then it'll be constant for a while. This whatever definetly has a mind of its own:( Its horrible. I miss school a lot because of it. I've tried cranberry pills, not drinking milk because the hormones in it, only wearing certain fabrics, only certain soaps, laundry suds and everything. No matter what it doesn't go away. Its so frustrating because no doctors ever call back and nobody seems to understand my pain. Sometimes there is a dull pulse, almost like a reminder.

I saw on the Toronto news that there's an ecoli infection going around that mocks a UTI basically. Its from chicken, due to all the antibiotics there giving them, they don't get rid of any of the disease and its spreading to people. The only way to cure its by 30 minutes of intervenise antibiotics a day.:/ just a thought

I hope everyone gets fixed :-) keep me posted !

Apparently the above is not entirely correct and may actually cause some people a worsening of symptoms. While acidity does seem to exacerbate the condition for many, alkalinity may also have a deleterious effect.

I had an appointment with a gyno-urologist the other day, and will be getting a test soon. According to the info she provided and the additional research I did after the appointment, it appears that alkaline substances can also increase the symptoms of IC. In the literature and online I found the suggestion to avoid foods high in potassium, including such items as cured meats and other foods with nitrites/nitrates. Potassium is alkaline.

I avoided the cytoscopy in the past, and this doctor intends on trying another test first, during which they put different solutions inside the bladder to see the reaction. One of these is an alkaline solution.

As for the woman who gets her bladder stretched- that is one treatment used for IC. It seems unhelpful to discount her experience when that could prove to be a legitimate or even the only effective treatment for some people suffering from IC.

I hope we can all find effective remedies!

I found after taking doxycycline just in case my test for chalmydia was false negative , and taking serveral anitbiotics that didnt help that

it is some form of herpes i believe . If i just take a herpes medication i feel better. I too have not had sex in months but am going to try soon. I am at the age of 49 and perhaps this has something to do with what is going on . I have missed my second period in my life and dont know what to make of it . Im in quite good shape ... im better than 6 months ago but for sure my bladder still even without a noticeable herpes outbreak feels sore and for no reason . try valtrex when you feel badly .

I live with chronic burning, throbing and pain in my urethra.  I had a parcial Hysterectomy 2 years ago and as a result I encounted tiny holes in my bladder and need reconstruction of the blatter.  Before being dignosed I had many cystoscopies to find where the fisulas were located.  I spend 6 months after the surgery tring to find out why my Urethra still hurt.  I felt like a had a UTI all the time.  Many medication by trial and error, the nurse suggested that I try a low dose of elavil 10 mg, Elavil was a drug used many years ago for depression in higher dose's, found at times to help with nerve damage in the uretha, for the part it has subsided the real pain, but there are times when I feel it a lot more. I'm still trying to find answers but in the meantime I hope this helps at least 1 person.
