Painful fatty deposits are caused, sometimes, by a rare disorder, which I have. It is called Dercum's Disease.

I read Dr. Karen Herbst's posts. She is the country's leading expert on fatty tissue disorders and very generous with her information to the public. She now works out of Arizona. I am sorry to report that after THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS later (since writing my initial post more than 6 years ago) I still have gotten nowhere other than 5 positive ANA Lab tests (AutoNuclear Antibody) which prove beyond a shadow of a doubt there is a terrible auto immune problem going on. Those fatty tissue lumps shrink and swell and have multiplied not only tenfold but the pain and stiffness in the muscles has spread to my hands, ribs, neck, hips, feet, groin... it's pretty much in every single part of my body now. I turned to a very healthy eating lifestyle but after doing extensive food elimination trials, I conclude that it is not just starch making me hurt. It's many many foods and impossible to pin down. I am now 51. It is 2016. I only keep a running post to let anyone out there who has similar symptoms know you are not alone and traditional medicine has let me down too. The medical industry has become selfish and self-centered putting the patient last. I STILL won't give up. I continue to eat more healthy but the pain is horrible. I also have not sought pain killers because I know that is a dead end.

Dercum's Disease is really hard to get diagnosed here in the US but I have read up on it and looked at pictures. My fatty deposits swell after I eat. If I fast, they shrink down to being almost non-existent. It takes about 3-4 days of fasting for that to happen and so it rarely occurs. However, I am healthiest in the morning (after having all night to fast) and sickest in the evening and it's a daily occurrence. Dercum's Disease consists of tumor-like lumps that never shrink according to the things I have read about it. I have not read about one case where the fatty tumors shrink and return to normal. This condition has spread to all parts of my body but you cannot see any of the lumps through the skin. They are deep into the fat and the muscles are knotted.
