If I loose weight will I breath better

I see nobody responded so I will. Of course you will breath better. Abdominal fat causes breathing difficulties all by itself. The internal pressure ends up pushing upward against an already compromised diaphragm. I've lost 55 pounds since diagnosis and I tolerate almost twice as much exercise.
Good luck to you,

I also was told yesterday that I have a paralyzed diaphram do you have any advice for me

Hi,
First, read all the back posts. I'm not an expert...just a fellow sufferer.

There's a Doc in NJ who specializes in this. He does nerve repair in select patients. Other approaches include plication and use of diaphram pacemaker. Plication usually is not done in obese patients and only provides small improvement.

One issue I have that often co-exists is sleep apnea. So get a sleep study and start cpap if indicated. It's a hassle but worth it. I've been using cpap for about 5 years and feel more alert and have lower BP.

Weight loss and cardio-vascular exercise will help.

I recently had plication of my paralyzed diaphram. Over three weeks out. My stomach is bloated and feeling weird pains. I also hear fluid sloshing around on that side. Not sure what to do. Surgery was done at Mayo hospital in Minnesota. Please help

Sheesh,
Go see your Doctor...not some online forum. Three weks out is not a long time. Your body may need months for things to adapt to your new "normal". Your stomach always has some liquid in it. If something was seriously wrong...you would probably be dead. So if you're still able to eat and poop and breathe, well those are good things.

I have had a paralyzed diaphragm for 3 years and they still tell me it will heal. I do not believe it anymore. My lifestyle has continued to decrease with having to take oxygen at night to breath since my blood oxygen drops below safe levels. I am now pushing for surgical efforts.

Hi,
I remembered the Doc who specializes in this malady. Name is Dr Kaufman and has a clinic in New Jersey but also does surgeries in LA. His PA will send you a packet to fill out. Lots of test required: neck ct, Pulmonary function test, sniff test, nd of course a chest X--ray. He prefers younger patients for the nerve graft (faster healing) and used diaphragm pacemaker on people who aren't suitable for graft. Medicare wouldn't pay for the tests so I was unable to see him. No money.

I've had this for 6 years and it hasn't healed. Oh, and using O2 at night may not be enough. I'm on cpap and won't sleep without it. Really helps. I used to wake up in cold sweat gasping, never rested, BP out of control. Morning headaches and weight gain. CPAP changed all that.

Going on my fourth year and not a whole lot of change. I am seeing "another" pulmonary dr. next month along with another breathing test to see if there is anything someone can do to get my breathing back. I have read many, many of these stories and it sounds so strange that so many people are having these paralyzed diaphragm issues. I am baffled because I still don't know how it happened to begin with?????????? I would love for someone to tell me who to see and what to do instead of all this guessing game. Not only that, but I'm sure my insurance company loves me. It's things like this that causes insurance costs to rise. If a professional can just give me some answers and I wouldn't have to keep searching for answers!!!!!!!

I found it very difficult to get any air in my lungs while swimming on my stomach. Are you able to swim perpendicular to the water?

The doctor damage my phrenic nerve and told me it would be a year before it would heal at this time I am still awaiting going on three years . My stamina for exercise is very limited which creates shortness of breath ,also I cannot lay on my back to sleep . My life has drastically changed because I can't do a lot of things I used to . There is a procedure called plication check it out it may be that you're a candidate . I am just dealing and living with it .
