I felt compelled to weigh in on this issue because this is my story as well. When I was 25 weeks pregnant, I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer and began going through chemotherapy and drug therapy. Because of the intense pain that these treatments cause, I was also prescribed pain medication that I am STILL on to this day. This was almost 5 years ago. To say that the pain medication was the least of the concern in my case, is an understatement. I am happy to report that even though I didn't have a stitch of hair on my body when my son was born, he was completely healthy and had a full head of hair! I understand the concern for those who have posted on this forum about their utter disgust for women who have had to use pain medication during their pregnancies, however this is a matter that is between the woman and the doctor and those determinations are ALWAYS made based on benefits outweighing the risks. It is not for others to vilify narcotic pain medication because people who are not in need of it, chose to abuse it. So far as the guest who said using Tylenol or ibuprofen during pregnancy, clearly you have no knowledge of what the pharmacology of these substances are or the physiology of the hormonal and biological processes of pregnancy. Having to take ANY medication for ANY reason is based on many factors and if you want to get pissed at someone, by all means...take a shot at me...cuz WOW...I apparently, by your opinion am SUPER dumb for undergoing chemotherapy during pregnancy which saved both MY life and the life of my child in doing so...and I guess even more dumb for having to take pain medication to get through the experience with limited pain so that I could still function as a human being and fighting to give my unborn child the healthiest shot at life in the process.
I was being treated by some of the highest qualified doctors in the entire country and what I was told concerning the pain medication is that there would be withdrawl potential, of which my son displayed none, thank God. So far as they know, there are no lasting effects, but in my case, none of the therapies started until I was into my second trimester. This was done because by that time, all of the crucial functions and developments were complete. He also was supposed to be smaller than average and he was not. With any medication during pregnancy, you should look into what nutrients that the drug may deplete and make sure that you respond accordingly with diet or supplementation. Don't listen to the ignorance of people with nothing to contribute. Congratulations on all your new babies, btw. Blessings!!!

Just dont take it unless you need it, I get kidney stones a lot and seem to get them more during pregnancy my doctor said that other then tylenol percocets are the ONLY safe pain killer for me to take because the pain would be so bad that i wouldnt be able to move much and i would throw up non-stop cause my stones are larger then what people normally get.. so if you are in severe pain then take one...but ask your doctor, and always let doctors and emergency room docs know your pregnant, im sure your doc will tell you that its ok if your in pain...i would even try only taking half of one and seeing if it helps.

For one i am not a DR. ,but my wife took percocet for the full nine months of pregnancy. She was in a car accident with my second son,so the third pregnancy really hurt. Out of everything i have read percocet is one of the safest pain killers to take. Also for your Dr.to say that he has no right, it is not his/her body. My feeling is you have to do what you have to do. Good Luck

I think your baby will be ok. I used drugs extensively in the beginning of my 2nd and 3rd pregnancy's before I knew I was pregnant and my kids are perfectly normal. Many people that I have known have done the same. It is not your fault that you used while pregnant before you knew that you where carrying a child. Try not to feel too guilty, we all make mistakes and all you can do now is take care of yourself for your baby and go on with your life as a new mommy! Take care! :-)

Before I got pregnant I was taking Percocet for about 2 years for pain management of arthritis in my back and leg. My husband and I decided that we wanted to have another baby so I went off all my meds. I know that I am hurting like crazy and still waiting to find out if we are pregnant, have about 12 days before we can test. I have read a lot of stuff on the topic and get mixed reviews, such as on this site. I have a cousin who was prescribed Percocet during her pregnancy for sciatica. Her baby was fine, no problems at all and weighed in a little over 9lbs when born and the baby is almost 3 now and HEALTHY. Baby is not addicted, but her momma is. It is a HIGHLY addictive drug and I could NOT imagine a baby coming off of it and having withdrawal because when I took myself off, SLOWLY, it was miserable.
Only other thing I can say is that my first child, and so far only, was a scheduled C-section because I had gestational diabetes and my baby was getting too big. At 39 weeks, the scheduled C-section date, my little punkin weighed 11lbs 2oz when she was born. I took no pain meds before I got pregnant and during pregnancy and because she was so big she spent her first 7days in the NICU. After the C-Section I was prescribed Percocet during my recovery. I breastfed and the doctors said that it was fine. My daughter was fine and never showed any signs of withdrawal.

So I was reading other peoples post because I seem to have the same question. You see I had surgery twice this summer (one in June and one in August) I was on Percocet because of the surgeries *Both on my back* I want a baby so bad right now which I know may seem strange since I just had surgery not long ago. Well lately I have been in a lot of pain but I don't want to take my pain medicine because I know there is a chance I could be pregnant. My boyfriend and I had sex the day before and the day of my ovulation and he didn't pull out *TMI I know*, I am hoping that I am pregnant but I dont want to take my meds to ease the pain because I don't want to ruin any chances of me being pregnant, So what do you girls think I should do?

I find it so frustrating that doctors treat people with chronic pain like drug addicts.  I was on morphine everyday for two years (prescribed by my doctor), and I decided to come off of it.  I was on anti-depressants, and other things, all trying to treat the pain (you know, they always tell you that you must be depressed and that's causing the pain).  I have endometrious, and before I got pregnant, I had to take percet throughout my period, because the pain was so unbearable that if I didn't, I couldn't even move and would spend all day in bed crying.  My doctor told me it was no problems, and then, all of a sudden, it was.  I was treated like a drug addict for using the medication exactly as she prescribed it.  Funny, she talked me back into the meds and told me there was no shame in it, and then she started to treat me different.

I am currently 8 weeks pregnant, and I also had to make this decision.  The endo is better, but my migraine still occur.  I have percet left over (I'm such an addict, except I have had a full prescription of them sitting in my house for two months, unused).   I cannot take migraine medications because they are not safe, I have been avoiding caffeine (which gives me some relief), and Tylenol doesn't help and I refuse to take it just to "do something."  My OB, who would not even prescribe the percet for my period told me that I could use it, and it would be just fine.  I was taken aback, because like many first time mom's, I'm terrified to do anything to harm my growing child.  I know she would not have told me it was ok if there were any doubts.

My sister is a nursing student and she knows people who have taken narcotics their entire pregnancies.  The ONLY reason it is class C is the possiblity of the baby becoming addicted and going through withdrawal.  If your doctor knows you are on it, they can prepare and your baby will get what he or she needs.  It is much worse to be in pain.  The stress can lead to miscarriage, and you have to remember to take care of yourself too.  Methadone is not that safe, it has all the risks of narcotics.  Don't let them mislead you.  As long as you are responsible and do things under a doctor's care.  Find a better doctor who can give you the facts.  Good luck and I hope everything works out for you :D

Just wondering if the birth of your baby came out ok??? was there any issues? I am 6 weeks pregnant and have been on perkocet for a  very long time. but I'm terrified of quiting "cold turkey" because of all the cramps and sickness I went through trying to quit like that when I first found out I was with child. so I've been taking less and less of the drug. I just need to know the truth, is my baby going to be ok????? I'm truly scared.

wow, um this isnt a stupid concern, but if MANY obs hav prescribed perk asa pain killer KNOWING you're pregnant, obviously it has to be some kind of safe. a ob can be sued for everything they own if they prescribe something you INFATICALLY SHOULD NOT use during pregnancy. yes a baby can become addicted but they can be addicted ti cigs and women all over the world smoke those while pregnant and most babies are fine, then again obs push you not to smoke. if an ob says you should take it, maybe ask him to watch your use.

You are clearly not a person who has ever experienced severe or chronic pain. The people here are NOT drug addicts! Taking Extra Strength Tylenol or Ibuprophen doesn't even touch the kind of pain they are talking about. It be like trying to use a bandaid to fix an amputation. When I used to try taking 4 - 200mg ibuprophen for my chronic severe neck pain, hoping it get off stronger medications - it did absolutely nothing! And btw, percocet has Acetaminophin (Tylenol) in it. Stop being such a judgemental jerk and stick to a topic you understand! PS all -Don't worry. I'm not pregnant or taking ibuprophen. I'm just researching because I have to take Percocet 10-325mg, 3 times daily for degenerative disc disease in my neck and really want a baby.

How frightening hilarious. One of the worse meds you can take during pregnancy is ibuprofen, due to the fact that it can cause the heart of the fetus to form incorrectly. In addition, please learn how to correctly spell and punctuate before posting. It's bad enough your comment was extremely inaccurate, but your writing makes it obvious how uneducated you are and proves no one should value your opinion.

I think that if its normal pregnancy pain yes suck it up but until you have disc disorder or buldging discs in your lower back if you have never experienced that pain you have no room to say suck it up, the stress test I had came back higher when I was not on my pain meds so the docotr advised me to not stop them. I hope you never experience the pain I go thru even when I'm not pregnant.
