Donna, thanks for remembering us. My D had her surgery with Filler on Tuesday, March 25th. It was a long one sided surgery. We drove and arrived home just a bit ago. I will post again. I just want to thank you all as I have followed your recoveries. We have taken a chance, but as David said awhile ago, what did we have to loose. There was more that the PS that was worked on. Talk to you all soon. Menzie
Menzie! So happy to hear from you! I've been thinking about you and your daughter all week and hoping that all went well. Please give her our best and tell her we are all sending healing thoughts and prayers her way. Let us know how she's doing when you get a chance.
Leesa: Glad your back is better. Take it easy on those curbs!
David: Thanks for the info on the butt spasms. I guess as long as I know they're a normal part of the healing process, I can put up with them a little better.

Menzie:
Thank God it's over, I'm so glad it's done. I've been thinking of you both a lot lately. Keep us posted. PLEASE remember that the recovery is very slow and try not to get discouraged along the way. Patience is key (I need to take my own advice!) I wish your daughter a full recovery and that you some good night's sleep.
Margie:
Thanks. Yeah, those curbs jump out at you once and a while! I'll take them very slow from now on. I used to run marathons, etc. Funny that a curb is now a great challenge!!

Menzie,
SO GREAT to hear from you. When you get a chance, let us know more details as appropriate. We've been thinking of you and your daughter.
Aztec, as an Aggie, I can't comply. I allowed it for one day when t.u. played USC a few years ago but that hurt and the pain lingers to this day. :)
Leesa, great about your back. You must have sent it this way as mine was giving me fits yesterday. Next time you do that, please let me know as a warning. :)

David: Sorry my back pain made it to your town. I'll try to keep the leg pain to myself. It's rreally been hurting this past week. Hoping the steriods kick in soon.
Have fun watching BB.

Good Morning all!
Just wanted to let you know that I heard from the missing Julie. She's doing fine and her appointments with Dr. Layzer and Dr. Barbaro went very well. She was even able to have the MRN while out here. She does not have access to a computer right now but will be home soon so she said to tell you all thanks for thinking about her and that she will post with ALL the details by Tuesday.

Boo!
Hey everyone. Sorry it's taken me so long to post...I shucked out a few bucks at the hotel I'm staying at so I could stop in and say hi.
The short version: I got to meet with Dr. Layzer and then Dr. Barbaro and both appointments went well. I had an MRN and got all the images on a CD (though I can't read it for squat) and am waiting for the results to be read. I am assuming either Dr. Layzer or Barbaro will call me with the results. From that point, the proof is in the pudding, so to speak. If the MRN it positive, looks like it's my turn on the butchers block. If not...sciatic notch injection...etc.
Otherwise, my butt hurts and my leg is on fire. Mmmmm....nerve pain.
So much has gone on since I last posted it's gonna take me a awhile to get through all the posts but I promise I will post more when I get home on Tuesday.
Overall, its been a great (albeit very VERY painful) trip. Everyone at UCSF was outstanding and San Francisco is beautiful beyond words. I was vey fortunate to be able to meet with both doctors while I was there and even more fortunate to have the MRN.
On another note, my fiance (Lynn) and I took a side trip out to South Lake Tahoe and I have never in my life seen anything more beautiful. And the climber in me was itching to summit some of those peaks.
Okay, I'm off to bed. We're flying back tomorrow and have an early start.
My hugs go out to everyone and I look forward to catching up.
Night, y'all
Take care,
Julie

Aztec, nope, not going to happen. No support for your horns here. Went to A&M but you're a horn at heart? That's a severe conflict. Oh well, you guys went down but, man oh man, Memphis looked really good and I'm not sure anyone in the land would have beaten them yesterday.
Julie, very happy to hear you made it to Dr. Barbaro and we look forward to hearing the results. Have a safe trip home.
To all, coming up on the fourth month mark this week. I'm experiencing some rather strange stuff. When I was first hurt, it started with severe back spasms from bowling. As I was rehabbing from those, I woke up one morning and my groin and hamstrings were sore. No big deal as I simply thought I had done too much running and working out. Of course, it grew into a full scale case of PS with pain down both legs, the rear, the hip joints and burning in the feet. You know, the normal symptoms for PS.
As of the last few days, the trend has reversed. The pain and pressure in my legs and feet has nearly disappeared but my hamstrings are sore and my back has been bothering me a little(okay, Saturday it was pretty tender).
What I think(hope) is happening is that my nerves are really taking a step change in healing and they are healing in a direction that my symptoms are simply mimicking those that I experienced at the earliest onset of PS. Yesterday, I felt good enough that I walked the pup(30 lbs now) for a mile and then went to the gym and hit the elliptical and did a very light weight and back workout. Despite my fears, I woke up this morning feeling just fine with just a touch of minor back discomfort but no pain whatsoever in my legs, rear, hips or feet.
I'm going back to the gym today for another very light workout. My bride is concerned about me coming back to fast which is my typical M.O. but I have no intention of doing anything that might endanger this recovery. I'm guessing it may take months and even up to a year for me to get back to anything near where I used to be. I'm also prepared for the potential that I may never return, completely, to my former self. However, things are looking up and I'm enjoying these few moments of being nearly and completely pain free.
I wonder if it's normal for the pain path to reverse itself in the manner I am experiencing or is this just a complete fluke?

SOUNDS THE SAME AS MINE, LAST POST I WROTE THAT IT WAS ABOUT 70% BETTER, BUT THEN IT GOT BAD AGAIN, WORST PAIN SITTING, HIP & BACK PAIN , LEG , FOOT PAIN , BOWEL & BLATTER PROBLEMS.
BUT AFTER A COUPLE WEEKS , IT HAS RELIEVED AGAIN. I WOULD SAY TO ABOUT THE 70% RANGE AGAIN. I WOULD SAY IT IS COMMON TO MIMIC IN REVERSE. MY LEG SEEMS TO BE WEAKER THAN BEFORE. BUT ALL PROBLEMS ARE LESS. IT SEEMS TO ROTATE TO DIFFERENT AREAS, WHEN ONE THING SEEMS TO GET BETTER, SOMETHINGELSE GETS WORST. BUT ALL IN ALL IT IS BETTER. I AM ABOUT 7 MONTHS POST OP.

Hi all. Good to hear from Menzie and hi y'all to Julie. Menzie we are all hoping to hear how your daughteris doing. We know it may take time so don't let her forget that. Julie, it sounds like your trip was successful. Glad you got to see both doctors We were so glad to hear from you.
I have been having lots of trouble getting into the forum recently--what about the rest of you. I keep fearing that I will get cut off. This is the first time all day I have been able to get in.
Wow, David you gave me a big scare when I started your post but glad it ended better--working out and doing the eliptical--very good. What I wouldn't give to get back to my fitness center and take a long walk.
Margie, hope your spasming has let up.
Leesa, you need to kick your butt and tell it to behave. That crazy pain just seems to jump around from one place to anther.
I talk to Dr. Filler this Thursday and I am not sure what will happen after that as that is the last scheduled appointment post injections. My leg pain got pretty bad for awhile but it had subsided and the butt is still acting up a lot if I push, thattis lead a normal life. But I got by wiht having dinner guests Sat. night.
Please let me know if anyone else is having trouble getting into the forum. I just never know when I kwill get in. It keeps telling me that there is some kind of error or that there are too many communications.
Bye y'all. Julie keep us posted. Menzie, hope things are looking up wiht you and your daughter. Take care everyone.

Julie:
Glad you paid to contact us, we were all wondering! Sounds like things are finally moving for you which is great. I used to go to Tahoe every summer when I was a kid. It is a beautiful place. I miss it.
David:
You scared me too! Great news though. I would give my left toe to work out. I think I'll wait instead for the 3 or 4 month mark. Are you still taking pain medication? Forgive me if you've already answered that. I know you're taking Skelaxin but can't remember about any narcotics?
Shirley:
Yes, I've been having trouble getting into the forum lately too. Hmmm?

Hi all,
LOL, sorry about the scare. After re-reading, I could certainly have improved the order of information so that the first take was not negative.
Worked out again last night, all is well.
Yes, I've also had problems with getting into the forum.
JLB, it's GREAT to hear from you. I have referenced your previous posts for people to see that the recovery can be up and down and take a while. Thanks so much for re-posting.
Shirley,
Yes, Dr. Filler and I discussed the pain med last Monday night and he said to come off slowly. As such, I take 2 hydro-codone per day but I will be dropping to one per day next week if everything stays the same. Same applies to Skelaxin.
Hope everyone has a great day.
Your friend,
David

Hey everyone, I haven't wrote in for a while. I was doing fairly well. Now I am so tired after being up all night (no joke didn't sleep a wink) because piriformis is just killing!!! The last time I posted I stated the improvement that I have been making and I am doing a half Ironman at the end of May. I had my surgery with Dr. Filler in Sept. . I am doing an Olympic distance triathlon on Sunday. My pain is I am sure of my own doing. I am tapering and I seem worse off how weird is that....
David, my piriformis was completely cut in half as well. My question is how can the muscle spasm when it is completely severed? I can't seem to grasp that even though its happening.
I have finally pulled out my perocet after so long. I am just soooooo tired, I have two kids 6 and 7 trying to help them with homework, dinner, etc.
Still fighting with insurance after 3rd appeal refused. They stated this surgery was experimental and would not be a sucess and that I could have had more help with pain management (which I was going to for a year for meds and injections including Botox). Or I should have went to a orthoped. which I did to no help he sent me to rehab which did not help. I am a lot better than before other than these last few days they are not living in my body I don't see how they could possiby state such things. Sorry had to vent. I am so upset.
Hawaiigirl: You left some unanswered questions for me. Sorry about that. All meds was prescribed by my pain management doctor here in Hawaii. With narcotics I had to give the pharmacy a hand written prescription. The lyrica was called in and used only before surgery by pain management doctor. All meds still are coming from pain management doc.
Regarding Dr. Filler. I have had appts. with Sheila on two different occasions that she did not call. She called at a different time and day for one the other was disregarded. But I stayed steady talked to Jordeen which was of tremendous help. Also got the payment worked out. They were very kind and professional. I am well aware of how busy Dr. Filler is, but he is an amazing doctor whom turned my life around. I can't thank him enough. Also if I lose to this insurance deal the surgery was still worth it for me. I will change insurance carriers for our business that is for sure. I feel the best care for me now because I cannot be in person at an appointment with Dr. Filler as with my Pain Management Doctor. He has seen all of my surgical reports though not an expert of this surgery he has been awesome.
Again for everyone: I have been using a Flector Patch it is antiflamitory patch. It has been the best find no side affects for me. AS for the Lidicaine patch it did nothing for me.
The Flector patch just came on the market so your docs may not be familiar with it. Believe me ask for it now!!!
Does it hurt anyone else it lay in bed. I cannot sit or stand. Laying down is not very good either. I lay on opposite hip with pillow between legs and ice on hip. Again this is my on doing..... Now I guess I must pay up.

Kym, PS is mainly an "overuse" disease. You have to stop running, or you will "pay the price" for the rest of your life.
The antiinflammatories you are taking will eventually start destroying your liver. Then you can die.
This is what happened to me. I just had to stop running. It was that or die.
