If you are able to stand the pain the first week with no pain medicine, i think you are healing very well. Every day will get a little bit better. I'm sure tomorrow your doctor will tell you you'll start being able to walk without crutches (but you'll have a limp and won't be able to put weight on the toe), then you'll start walking normal (or as normal as you can with a boot!), then you'll be totally fine walking in socks or barefoot around the house. It might take a few months for the swelling to go totally down and to be in normal shoes again. However, during that time there is really no pain (unless you're trying to put a tight shoe on!).

I am a healthy 66 year old who had hammertoe surgery on 3 toes and pins in 2 toes 6 weeks ago.  For the first 3 days after surgery I kept my foot elevated and iced and stayed in bed. To my great surprise, I never experienced any pain! My doctor had me wear the post surgical shoe for a month. I was supposed to transition into tennis shoes 2-3 hours a day at first and then gradually increase the time.  My toes do not like the top of the shoe,so I have cheated by wearing open toe shoes which are much more comfortable.  Tomorrow I'll see the Dr again & hope this did not create any problems.MEDICAL

I just had screws put in the third and fourth toes of my left foot. No pain at all after surgery. I was given a prescription for oxycodyn, but never had to use it. I have taken 2 tylenol and advil for the first week or so. I got my stiches out today. I stayed on crutches for 2 weeks and elevated it 23 hrs a day. The doctor said it looks great. It is swollen and it is tight and tingly and I do have some mild pain, but nothing I can't live with. I have read that it could take up to 6 months or a year for my foot to feel really good. I read that I will be able to workout and play sports. I am 57 and do not play sports, but I am looking forward to working out. I really did nothing for almost 2 weeks, even though my doctor told me I could walk without the crutches after the first week. I suggest you elevate and ice it and stay off it. Wear your boot and use your crutches. Be patient. I am worried that it may not heal, but I am going to really try to take care of it. Hope it goes better for you.

Hi thanks for replying! You're right about everything. My doctor told me not to walk on crutches and although it was painful at first and I had a very bad limp I was better by the hour and hardly limping two days later. I have definitely been recovering great. Now I wear my loose boots and yes the only pain is my toe rubbing when I put my boot on then it is gone. Also the doc did say my toes would be swollen a few months and they are. I am supposed to get my other foot done in like two months. I have another question if you don't mind. I am using vitamin e oil on the scar and I ordered aloe vera. What did you use for your scars or would recommend and did it work? Also I had the stitches removed yesterday 2/8/13 and there are still pieces of thread and skin he said would fall off. Did that happen to you and if so how long does it take to fall off?

Thanks I appreciate your replies!

Now I'm 7 months from surgery. I'm still in constant pain, can't walk or stand for any length of time. I've been two orthos and one podiatrist to see what I should do next. There's no consensus among them. The podiatrist I saw yesterday said correcting the problems I'm experiencing will be very diifficult. The one thing they all agree on is that the "hardware" has to come out. That means the staple and the pin. If only I had July 11 back again and couud cancel this surgery! I'm so happy for all of you who've had success in this operation. And jealous too!

I had surgery yesterday, February 15, 2013. I read all of the posts on all the sites before going in and was pretty nervous. Most people seem to have had some post-surgery pain; some had a lot.  So I thought I might offer mt early post-op experience to give some hope to others.

It's been about 36 hours since the surgery and I have had no pain whatsoever. None. Zero. If it wasn't for the bandage, I'd swear that the doc had called it off while I was under.  Yesterday I took the prescription meds at half dose as a precaution. This morning I took Tylenol, again just as a precaution. This afternoon I haven't taken anything and feel fine. I've kept my foot elevated and iced, as was advised.

Everyone is different, so maybe I'm just a lucky outlier. If something takes a turn for the worse, I'll repost.

Hello,

Just yesturday I found out I will be having a Hammertoe opperation on my left 5th toe. Not to mention im having this procedure done on my birthday. How long can I expect to be in a boot/ crutches? How long should I plan on being out of work? What is the pain for an opperation like this?

I had a very bad experience with hammertoe surgery, doctors fault I still have the hammer despite the painful procedure. The doctor removed the scab causing a major infection. preventing the toe from healing properly. The surgery was a year ago and is still problematic scar tissue, etc. I came onto this site to find out if laser surgery could help.me, does anyone have any advice for me? I wish you luck on your surgery

Well, I find all this interesting.  I did not look here before surgery (bunion and severe dislocated adjacent hammer toe)as I had gone through it with my wife.  Used the same, hard nosed doctor and have the same post-op experience and directions. Had very little pain for first few days and none after that until the pin was removed last Tue; that lasted just a few hours. Doctor's orders: absolute do not attempt to stand or walk on it for the first six weeks. First week not farther than bathroom; next week not past the family room.  Now after four weeks I am going out occasionally since I have no fear of ramming the pin back into the foot. I have used a 'knee scooter' instead of crutches. It is probably not covered by insurance but for the $25/wk its worth it. I am looking forward to the full recovery my wife has experienced and rejoining her hiking; she is a 8-14 mile trail hiker multiple times a week. At 65+ I am too young to just sit!:-D
