I had three hammer toes and bunion surgery 6 1/2 weeks ago. It has been the worse surgery of my life. The nerve pain was the worse, the swelling, and overall pain was bad. I took pain pills for three weeks and then switched to tylenol, I live alone, and had cousins to help a few times. It is still very painful. My baby toe needs a ligament release since it is elevated above the other toes. i am not happy about that.

I agre that hammertoe surgery is alot more painful and a headache than bunion surgery. It's been 3 months for me and my hammertoe is usually swollen throughout the day but I ice, ice, and ice! It does feel weak and limber and not like my regular toes at all though it's been 3 months, and it I have to still bandage so that it continues to heal straight because it leans to the right (I had the right foot done). So, I'm hoping my toe heals back to normalcy and I read that the process can take 3-12 months....well atleast I have 3 months down :)

What about proteolytic enzymes to metabolically breakdown the fibrin and ameliorate the pain?

I'am a 45 male, And I has Hammtoe Surgery, On July 09/2013, On my left foot and my Toe next to my big toe, I live along, And I must said, I was very acted and now I'am home bound and I know that I need the surgery. But I'am happy I has it and I'am now just want to get back to my life. But the pain is so intense that I have to take pain medicine and rest in my bed all day and night..I has a pen put in my toe and my big toes was touch the other toe so he cut the big toe. A week later, I Went to the Doctor to get my feet rewrap and he show me that now my toes is striagt and next week he will they the pen out. But I just I have to be patient and try not to feel depressed, But with the pain medicine I can make no decision because I'am high. So my life has to stop for now. But I'am happy I deal with things before the surgery. And I decide just to be patient and rest.. At least I know that I can do things that I could'nt do before surgery. With that said with the booth that suck and the pain, I pray that as soon as possible I can resume my life. And put this in the past.

Yes!!! it is a painful recovery the first 10 days, OMG! pain pills did not work at all. I had (right foot)all 4 toes done at once June 18, 2013 only a month and 2 days ago. they are still swallon and I elevate/ ice 24/7, but it can take 6months to a year for the swelling to go away.  I get my left foot (all 4 toes) done in Jan 2014. But yes it is painful even more so for me because I had 4 at one time, but What can I do it had to be done.

I had both feet done at the same time (toes 2, 3 & 4 on both feet) on April 4, 2013. The end of June I got the okay to resume my normal activities, such as walking, riding my horse, yard work, etc. It is still painful at times, but much better. Still get a little swollen when I'm on my feet all day, but I just ice them in the evenings. The summer heat my have something to do with the swelling as well. So hang in there & try to enjoy your down time! I played a lot of video games and surfed the web. :)

Undate on my Hammtoes Surgery on July 9,2013, I must said it was very pain full and I thought I could take the pain pill only when I have pain but I has to take them every four hour and they made me not abled to funtion, I was high like a kite. But it help the pain on Wed. July 24,2013 I went back to the doctor and he remove the pen and the stictches on my left toe where he remove some skin and too them. He told me I need to wear the shoe for one more week ,and soak my feet two time a day the week is up Wed July 31,2013, But I must said as of the day after he move the pen an stitches I cut back on my pain pills every day until on yesterday I only took one pill. So I going to test out sander when I feel up to it. If the hurt I call the Doctor and go back to the boot. He told me some people heal faster then other an I'am okay. Since the pain stop I feel okay I walk around my house in my sock but I put on the shoe when I'am  walk are standing up on my legs for a long time sitting up for a long time. But my life is getting back to noral.
