The recovery is slow; 8 weeks. First two with very, very limited weight-bearing. I have a spike in the marrow to hold the toe in place, flat, for 8 weeks, and it extends beyond the toe. Catch it or bump it and you will see stars and feel faint. It cannot get WET at all. Keep that in mind. No soaking, a simple hand washing with a soft cloth, AFTER week two, and then immediate drying. All of my toes around the hammer toe (middle) are swollen and bruised from the surgery. I expect to wear compression stockings for all 8 weeks, keep my leg elevated under my desk, iced when possible (and the entire time I am sleeping), and 'walking' with the boot is really clomping since the boot keeps your foot completely flat. NO flexing while the bone(s) knit back together. I had no pain from the surgery and took only three of the hydrocodone tablets; but the swelling for five days was painful as my taut skin felt like it would explode. The removal of stitches at week two were not painful. I have no idea what it will feel like when the surgeon removes 'the pin in an easy office visit' from the bone marrow. There are many scheduled pre and post imaging appointments so the surgeon can track the bone healing. These are all additional costs to the quote price from the hospital and surgeon. And, people to read the xrays, and the necessary EKG and pre-op appointments with medical professionals BEFORE the surgery. This is week three after my surgery and the bills now total almost $18,000.
I will never wear high heels again; rheumatoid arthritis, family foot problems, and one surgery is enough.

I sat on a stool with my foot out of the shower propped up I put the shower curtain over my leg and no water ran down my leg at all. I had a plastic bag over the foot just in case. Worked well.

Hi Guest Dorothy215.....did you experience the feeling of the pin moving around in your foot?

My friend has been given a choice of two options to, 'fix,' her hammer toe. Have the digit amputated, or have it pinned. It's second toe. Not needed for balance etc. I'd have opted for amputation, but she's chosen pinning. She lives alone, so I don't know how she'll cope with post-op period.

I have just had hammer toe surgery 3 days ago. First 6 hours after surgery toe was numb. I took first strong pain killer before numbness completely wore off but the next 12 hours thepain was very strong. 3rd day of recovery and pain has eased. I can walk around and have had my first proper shower. Not returning to work for at least 3 more weeks. You may have to wear some sensible shoes for a few months takes a while to have all swelling go down.

I just had hammertoe surgery this past Friday. So, I'm a day away from being 1 week post op. When the anesthesia wore off, I was in a bit of pain when I walked to the bathroom. It was more of a burning sensation than anything else. I popped a pain pill and propped it up with an ice pack. After a while, the pain was gone. Since then, I've learned to walk entirely on the heel and put more weight on the other foot. I had my first appointment on Tuesday, which was 4 days after my surgery. I got the bandages changed out. It wasn't as painful as I expected. Yesterday, I was severely constipated from the pain meds and haven't taken any since. Today was my first day without then and I didn't hurt a bit. I'm one that can't seem to sit still. I've been moving around alot and I think that's contributing to me healing a bit quicker. I will have my stitches removed 10/31. Hopefully, I will be able to get out of the boot too. If not, then maybe another week afterwards. Good luck and feel free to msg me back with any questions. I had a bunion removed on my right foot 08/25 as well. I will be happy to share that experience as well.
