Hey! Thanks for your post, very comforting! I'm 5 days into my recovery, the pain is the worst in the mornings. I'm noticing that it doesn't hurt that much when swallowing, rather, I'm getting the majority of my pain on the sides of the back of my tounge, this only happens when I eat or drink something and it touches the back of the tounge, anyone know what would cause this?

Hi I'm a 12 year old girl and today is day 6 post-op I was on liquid antibiotics, they were fruit punch flavour and they have little balls of stuff in it so it was just disgusting, last night I took a doze an do knew that it wasn't helping at all. This morning I stopped taking them, I feel so much better without then even thought there's only 4 dozes left, I knew I couldn't do it, the didn't do anything so yeah, I had a few bites of a PB&Honey sandwich and I've been drinking room temperature water and I am going to try ice water. Here's the rest of my experience Day one I went in to surgery at around 8:00am and I woke up in recovery, I remember first wkaing up and begging the nurse for my mom and she got her, then I had about 2 cups of chips of ice and then I got released and I went home and slept all day and through the night Day 2 I woke up telling good and drank about 6 cups of water and then I went on a 8 hour drive witch was a great idea Day 3 I was feeling great, I had 3 bottles of water, a Starbucks it didn't taste good but yeah and a few fries and some soft macaroni salad and a thin piece of ham Day 4 Gooooooood. I ate watermelon, watermelon juice from tropicana, Mac&Cheese, water and a freezie Day 5 I was good all day until my mom made dinner for my family I totally lost it, it smelled so good and I just cried for 2 hours and passed out it wasn't her fault, everyone has to eat. I have to say I would've rather just got tonsillitis than having this surgery because its extremely painful and most foods taste bad, but hopefully that bad taste goes away soon because I can't describe how much I miss food. Good luck and I hope you have a speedy recovery!

29 yrs old. I am in day eight post surgery. Also had septoplasm and adenoib removal at same time as tonsillectomy. Lucky me. I mostly was fixed on nose pain and my throat pain was secondary, like background noise. Until day 5, when when my spoints came out and nose was healed almost altogether. Then look out throat pain!! Holy he'll it's like my throat pain went in reverse order and and hurt worse every day. Had to get more meds just to sleep/function at all. I hate asking for them because you would think the Dr obviously knows what you are going through but somehow they make you feel uneasy like it's Its just you. I didnt get it. The original post explains best about how it feels people think you are exxagerating and how you almost feel paranoia...very strange. This is unlike any thing i have ever experienced and beyond comprehension of how the pain and unomfort will be. Today I finally realized it will get better and saw a significant turn around. Maybe because it's the first day I didn't want to punch a baby or puppy in trrhe face hole.. (figure of speech)....
So my advice is be ready to go to your happy place for at least ten days I'd say...
I'm a 29 yr old man..ex military..welder...been in multiple fights in early years...broken bones...stitches...so think your tough? You ain't seen nothing...so get prepared. And good luck. Gotta go eat my chicken stars. They are clinging me to life

I'm 21 year old female, I am on day 6 after my op, my surgeon told me I will regret it and it will hurt a lot but I thought he was exaggerating and in the long run its always worth it, no more tonsillitis or quinsy! Damn I was completely wrong! When I had mine out on the 25th Feb I was okay, I even got discharged from hospital early because I could talk, eat drink and felt fine, it was uncomfortable but I thought that everyone said it was far worse than how I I felt. 2 days later I woke up haemorrhaging and had to be taken into theatre to get the bleeding stopped. Since then I have never been in more pain in my life. My ears ache so bad and my throat feels like a constant throbbing pain, pain killers help but not hugely, I just want to get up and do something but am in way too much pain to do anything. I feel so lazy!! And every time I need to cough in terrified I'm going to start bleeding again! I can't wait to get to the day where the pain eased off!!

Hi there, I had my tonsils out last Thursday (4 days ago) and I am in excruciating pain I wish someone had told me and I would've forgotten about the operation this pain is ridiculous!! I can barely swallow, the first 2 days were good I drank heaps and ate ice cream and custard, but day 3 and 4 have been a nightmare, I can barely talk let alone swallow and I fear dehydration

Hello I am 22 year old female and im on day 6 now of my tonsillectomy today has been the best day so far. I managed to make cheesy pasta which was lovely and drank a can of coke. When I woke up I was in no pain but I was very high on my medication but it was great I was in no pain at all I ate my mash potatoe and I had a kinder egg, I needed to go to the toilet so my mum wheeled me as I couldn't stand up or walk without feeling dizzy when I got to the toilet I started feeling sick and threw up quite a bit so the nurse gave me some anti sickness medicine. I didn't get to much slee due to being on a ward with noisey people so I was glad to go home, when I got home i had some mash potatoe and sausages and then went to sleep for the night. The next day was fine I had a roast dinner and ate most of it but had mashed potatoe instead of roast. Monday was fine just laid about in my bed and tuesday I managed to get out of the house and go out for lunch with my friend. Then early Wednesday morning about 4 am with really bad pain and I developed a cough and coughed up so much blood my partner took me to a&e with my mum and they did blood tests by this time the bleeding had stopped and the doctor looked in my mouth and said that I had broke a blood vessel due to coughing but he wasn't worried about it and the bloods came back normal and I was sent home around 7.30am went home and slept all day and was quiet sick too. Now Its day 6 Thursday and I feel so much better just got a lot of salvia coming up and the taste in my mouth is what makes me gag and then I am sick but I keep sucking in extra strong mints and chewing gum. I believe I haven't had pain that bad due to eating properly just force yourself I know it's hard but it's worth it and keep on top of medicine set alarms in the night and drink plenty. I found I could drink orange juice better then water but make sure to drink water too. Just sleep lots and have warm baths and I also found strangely enough by putting a hot water bottle on your throats really works and alcohol free mouth wash don't forget to keep your mouth clean all the time.Fingers crossed I've got over the worst. Good luck

The key point to remember after a tonsillectomy is to eat as normally as possible as quickly as possible. I had them removed aged 38 and had jelly and ice cream a few hours after surgery and then toast (well chewed) for breakfast. it takes 10-12 days to feel better and once you accept that (knowing that the pain is finite), it gets easier. Take your painkillers as prescribed to keep pain at bay.

Hi, great post! I'm a 16 yo male on day 7 and oh my god it is not getting any better at all. I'm scared because I'm still in intense pain and I was prescribed Percocet which is oxycodone and acetaminophen. The part I'm scared about is that I'm almost out and I really don't know if he will prescribe more, and these meds are the only thing that can make the pain bearable. This is nothing that I expected it to be, the ear pain is probably the worst. Everytime someone talks it's like someone took the sharpest knifes and repeatedly stabbed my in the ears. Side note: please do not have mouthwash as a useful thing, when I tried it, it burned a whole in my throat and I started bleeding everywhere. The hospital said not to use mouthwash for at least the first 2 weeks.
