I have a 54 degree S curve. I now have constant leg pain in addition to back pain.
I will NOT let them fuse my spine and never be able to bend again. I will go for massage therapy, hydrotherapy, PT, take pain killers, use stima, live on pills. but I will not allow a rod and fusion to be done to me.
ANYTHING, hope you all hear me, ANYTHING is a better alternative. I do not want to be alive and fused and in constant pain, and no way out, and be even more dependent then I already have become; Walking is now difficult for me and I use a cane. But at least I still have fight left in me. I am going to try and fine a good surgeon who can fix the L4L5 problem and the stnosis.
I had the Harrington Rod surgery almost 45 years ago! I am now 57 and in extremely good shape and health..other than I too live with the pain that is in my lower back and my shoulder/neck area. This just came on in the last few years. I find chiropractic care has great helped. My neck is nowhere near as forward or as stiff and immobile as it was and the lower back pain is completely alleviated. I combine with massage therapy and most of the time feel pretty good again. Only when I stop the chiropractic treatment does it return with a vengeance. My understanding is that the surgery only works for so long and then the curvature returns and that seems to be what I am experiencing. Anyone ever had the rod removed? If the spine is fused why would the rod be needed any longer?
Hi,
I had scoliosis surgery 28 years ago when I was just 15 years old!!! It was such a long time ago, I hadn't ever heard of the condition, felt isolated, scared and received no after care what so ever.
On a positive, the surgery was successful, and I had a very normal, pain free life until I had children. My son was born 18 years ago when I was 25 (10 years post opp) and that was the first time I really experienced pain. However, it soon settled down and again, I had pain free years until my daughter was born 12 years ago. And that's when the pain started. At first, it was in waves, and I always put it down to muscular; it would bother me for a few months, and then it would settle down again.
However, this episode, started in December 2011, and it started in my lower back. A constant lower dull ache that just seemed to get worse. I developed hip pain, neck pain, a click in my shoulder blade on rotation, all in my left side of my body and suffer with constant headaches and Raynaud's phenomenon (blood restriction and pain to my feet which i am convinced is related).
I have battled with my GP for referrals to the hospital and was finally given a spinal injection in Oct 2012 for a Disc Bulge. This has helped but i feel it is wearing off fast. I have seen a should specialist who agrees there are problems and again injection pain relief. I am seeing the Hospital Physio but am so depressed and fed up. I am convinced ALL my conditions (I have terrible stomach pains too) are all related to my scoliosis and my surgery with Harrington Rods.
I would love to hear form anybody who is suffering with similar symptoms to myself many years on from surgery.
I really hope you Krista and all other with pain will be better after all.
As a father to my daughter with constant hard pain in her back (especially the lower back)
after a surgery 4 years ago (partially redone 2 years ago) I am looking around internet to
find some golden bullet to help her. The doctors says everyhing looks fine on x-ray so they
cant help her.. :-(
I know your pain, father. I am mother of someone in constant pain and I am doing the same thing. Please tell me what do you mean partially redone? Right now we are considering taking the hardware out of her back. Doctors are at a loss as to the pain and a horrible popping sound in her back. We are frustrated to say the least.
I'm 16 and had my back surgery when I was 12. I had a serve curve and after surgery experienced a lot of pain. it has gotten better, but occasionally I have pain in my shoulder blades which i'm experiencing right now as i am typing this. I also have cramps in my lungs. I know my curve damaged some of my internal organs, but after 4 years i'm still experiencing pain.
Can you tell me what essential oils you are using?
i had my surgery about 1 1/2 years ago now. I had the rods in my back and before my surgery I was asked "did i want a curved back and pain or have a scar, straight back and pain because either way you will always have pain" this is because you have something in your body attached to your bones that isn't naturally supposed to be there. I'm sorry to say that you will most likey always have pain and that you just have to manage it, if it gets too bad you will most likely need pain killers. because if you think about it you have had a trauma and they have changed the structure of your spine from a curve to near enough perfectly straight.
I would suggest going to your doctor and explaining what you are experiencing and that you have had your surgery 13 years ago and they should be able to help you, i have done this and they did give me stronger pain relief than paracetamol for only when i need it. I hope this helps.
I had scoliosis surgery over 2 years ago- My spine was fused from T-3 down and rods also put into my pelvis to stabilize the lower spine. All of my lower right back pain and groin pain is gone. However, all of the new discomfort- burning, tingling , feeling like "there is a board" in my back is in my upper area also between the shoulder blades.I had read that after fusion, all of the stress on the spine is now on the area that is NOT fused. So in my case, I believe that is what is happening in addition to what I believe are adhesions from a drain site.I use a TENS unit, tonic water which has quinine in it that relaxes the muscles, physical therapy and magnesium. This, along with heat, seems to help Please let our Dr. know of your symptoms. The muscles have been cut and so many ligaments stretched. This is a massive surgery.. I don't think I even realized how long the rehabilitation time would be. I hope you can get some relief. God bless!
I suggest that everyone here go to the "Scoliosis forum chat site" - just google that and it will come up. It is the best site for discussing about harrington rod surgery. Although the moderator is pro scoliosis revision surgery, there are some knowledgeable people on there.
Best of luck to us all in enduring our terrible pain. God bless you all in your suffering.

I had scoliosis correction surgery in 1994. I have had chronic lower pack pain since about 2001. Because the mobility in the spine is limited to only a few areas, the ones untreated by the surgery, they are going to wear out faster.
