I am 43 to be 44 this month. My issue began in February, anything I ate had a metalic taste, then a few days later my throat swelled up and I was unable to swallow. I went to the ER on 3/6, they took a CT of my throat and they saw a thickening, they gave me steroids to reduce the swelling, which helped. Then on 3/8 I went to my ENT and he said I had inflamed and infected tonsils along with canca sores in my throat. I continued to take a steriod pill and the swelling went away in a week, I was also on anti-biotics to help cool the tonsils. I went back to the ENT in late March and he suggested the tonsils should be removed as whil;e the swelling was gone I had throat pain throughout. On April 13th, my tonsils and adnoieds were removed. I had no issues as far as bleeding after the removal, yet in the almost 4 months now since the tonsils were removed, I have a salty taste in my throat, and when I eat and the food scrapes the back of my throat I cough very serverly to the point of choking and then the choking causes me to gag and I have even vomited due to the gaging. I went back to the ENT and he put my on Prylosec for an acid re-flux issue, which I do not have, the salty taste is coming from my throat, not my stomach, but I am playing along to see what happens. When this does not work, I will ask for an MRI of my throat. This had beenalmost 4 months of ups and downs as far a recovery. I do feel a bit better each day but i am still far from where I was before the issues began in February. I guess as we get older and an operation like this takes much longer to receover from.

I am a 29 yr old female and just had my tonsils and adenoids removed. I will start by saying that if I knew it was going to be this painful post op I would have never had the surgery! I suffered from chronic tonsillitis and my dr said that I was out of options and my tonsils had to come out! I am on day 4 of recovery and by far today has been the most painful. I have not been able to keep anything down, water included. I was in pain post op but nothing that I couldn't manage. Since I eve added vomiting to my list of symptoms it has been downhill from there. My ears are killing me, I feel like I am being choked and I can't swallow even my own saliva. I know we are supposed to drink and drink and drink some more but it is so painful I can't bare the pain. I hope there is light at the end of the tunnel. I don't know how much more I can tolerate this pain! It is worse than child birth!!

Have no fear. It takes at least 2 weeks to really start feeling better. Although I think you'll continue to feel "stuff" in your throat until it all heals up properly. At day 12 I noticed a remarkable improvement, almost overnight. Although, yawning still hurts a lot, but the doctor told me that's the last thing to improve and it doesn't do any harm to yawn. By now, you should feel much better!

I just got tonsils out yesterday and cant sleep tonight, I sucked on ice chips take Roxicet for pain and have acid reflex really bad, Im 60yrs old and have to have the tonsils removed due to an abscess in left tonsil.  I told him to take them both do not wanna come back later with another abscess.  If the doctor had of caught it earlier I wouldn't have to get them out only drained but they kept telling me they dont see anything because I was complaining about left ear down to throat hurts.  I went thru this for about 6 months so my sister in another state advised me to take my health into my own hands so never referred by the regular doctor, I called and set up an appointment with a ENT he put a tube in my nose to throat with this camera on the other end, then he wanted to be sure and requested a CT Scan and surely it was an abscess inside tonsil on left side, I never want to see that family doctor again, I know she could not see anything looking in ear but if you dont know nothing refer me to someone that does, Im starting day 2 of my tonsillectomy and hope this acid reflex goes away, I have Prevacid but have to ask the doctor if I can take them for this acid reflex, I have only eatin popsickle's,jello & icechips and I also have no taste.  I do bleed very little though just will be glad when all this barely swalloring goes away & the acid reflex.

Im 19 and got my tonsils out over a month ago. Days 5 to 10 after the surgery were the worst. SOOO much pain. Other than that everything healed fine, just a little bit of bleeding on day 6. Popsicles and water were pretty much all I could handle for two weeks. But now a month after surgery... everything I eat, and I mean everything, tastes metallic. Its hard for me to eat because everything, even water, tastes so horrible. I've lost weight that I cant really afford to lose. I have a part time job as a chef and leave for a 3-year program in chef school in a month... how the heck am I supposed to create fantastic meals without tasting them?? I guess I'll have to hire a food taster..

Will this awful metallic taste go away?? Every post I've read says no... I really hope it goes away because I love food and cooking and me not being able to enjoy food ever again would be quite depressing.

OMG !!!!  I could have written your concerns to a T !!!  I had my  tonsils out November 3, 2010 and I am feeling the exact same way as when you wrote this. In fact, just yesterday I went  for a second follow up and he told me it was acid reflux, put me on prilosec !  I'm convinced he burned all of my membranes and tissue in my throat with whatever it was he used during the procedure.   ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** private e-mails not allowed*** Please read our Terms of Use

Looks like this issue goes on and on ugh.  I had my tonsil removed on January 3rd 2012  and it is now March 17th 2012, and I am sill having all these issues.  It is driving me insane.  I wish I would have just kept the stupid things.  Its great not being sick all the time but I can only taste really spicy items and sweets.  And the whole feeling like my throat is full of sandpaper is grrrrrr.

I had my tonsils taken out Dec 2006. I struggled with the choking feeling for YEARS.. some days were worse than others. This feeling contributed to me not being able to work out, emotionally eating, etc. Not fun at all. Recently I think I have found something that is finally starting to make my life easier - Praise the Lord! I got diagnosed with muscle tension dysphonia. They think I started breathing abnormally and speaking differently, after my tonsillectomy. I am currently going to speech therapy and massage therapy to help with this. I am noticing a difference for the first time in years. The massage therapy is helping tremendously! He is working on my back, chest, neck, throat, jaw, etc. I just wanted to pass this along, and maybe.. just maybe.. this could be the end of the road for the choking sensation for some of you. Stay strong. The Lord always gives us enough strength to overcome any situation. There is hope in Him.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

just wanna say i had a tonsillectomy done almost a month ago. nothing horrible happened - felt like there was sandpaper at the back of my throat for the first few days, and hurt like hell to even swallow. just keep drinking water, and lots of fluids - important to keep hydrated. don't try to eat anything, just stick to cold soups (strained) - the kind you can drink out of a child's sippy cup. and icicles and popsicles. ice cream creates mucus build up which can be difficult to get rid of. started eating soft solid foods about a week and a half after the surgery (really soft chicken in soup, steamed fish, tofu, etc.) went back to see my doctor two weeks after the surgery and i was completely healed up and eating regular food. spicy food was still a bit painful at first, but it's alright now! the important thing is to not aggravate the healing process and let your body heal on its own time. the choking feeling is because the uvula swells due to the stress on the throat, and can block the air passage. should subside in a few weeks!
