Hello. I am a 42 yr old gal who is on day 10 of my surgery. I still sleep in my chair because I have trouble breathing if I lay flat. I am off my pain meds except liquid Tylenol every 4-6 hours and spray Chloreseptic (life saver). I also found Oragel a huge help for my sore tongue. What really helped I think was taking hot showers and just opening up my mouth and gargeling as much as I could. I still am on soft diet but I tried to eat starting the day after surgery. I ate soups, icepops, and as much water as I could cram in. I also ate pudding and cottage cheese. I feel that forcing food does help the body heal. I still lost 8 lbs. It is to the place where I feel I have regular ole strep which is better than the post surgery pain. Every day brings better changes...even if they are just little changes.

I'm 18 and it's been a week today since my surgery. My throat, uvula, and tongue are still swollen. I talk like an id**t -_- I'm still in pain and sleeping sucks! I'm starving, can barely eat the things the doctor told me I could...so yeah...altogether the worst experience of my life. Also theres this slimy taste in my mouth that makes everything taste like it...which is gross...yeah.

Hi, I am 40 and had a tonsillectomy 6 wks ago. Worst experience ever! Now there is no pain, only issues with swallowing(liquids mainly). The liquid or semi-liquid wants to come out my nose. Anyone else have this issue and what can be done. I find if I hold my nose when I swallow it helps.

I'm day 22 post tonsillectomy... age 60!  I still have a lot of throat swelling, which radiates down my neck and is scary. I had a three week follow-up and the ENT said things looked great (but what does he know)... he said to take Advil round the clock (now that I'm past the two week bleed crisis) because the nerves were regenerating.  I can eat without pain and some of the  feeling of "food stuck in the back of my nose"  has eased a bit. The wound site remains tense and the swelling at times seems to block or occlude my throat but I can breath normally, although it feels like I'm suffocating. I'm nervous about the outcome because the recovery has been so long. I just hope that this ordeal pays off and I get my life back. I found that doing exercise, such as reading the newspaper out loud or chewing gum restored the speech muscles faster. I returned to the gym last week to regain my energy level.

It's been nearly 3 weeks since my Tonsillectomy. I'm 36. It took two weeks before I could talk without having to stop for hours due to the pain. I talked to my family via paper and pen most of the time til then. This whole time my tongue has been swollen and painful. It feels like canker sores in the back sides where the clamp was. The Dr. said my tongue swelling was a complication. My husband who is a dentist told me it's possible the nerves were damaged and it could take months for the nerves to regenerate. I hope that's not the case. It also causes a slight lisp and I want that to go away soon as well. I was taking an anti-inflammatory which helped with the swelling but I have a different surgery tomorrow and had to go off of it. The second it was out of my system my tongue was swollen again. Anyway, good luck everyone! I wanted to share what I knew about what is going on with me for anyone else who may go thru this. The good news is eventually it should go back to normal and oh, I lost 10lbs...not a good way to lose it but I think it was my tongue making it so much worse as some people were eating after a few days...interesting.

Hi Guys, I'm so glad that I found this forum. I have been suffering since my tonsillectomy 9 days ago and blaming my bad luck for that. I have also started to regret from going for the operation as if it was a miracle solution to tonsil and related problems I have been having. I watched some tonsillectomy videos on youtube and compared the results to my throat, read some articiles etc to find an answer to my question which is "what might have gone wrong!!!". I am trying so hard to be optimistic but I am afraid its not working :(

After my surgery I woke up with numb lower lip with a big bruse inside of it and partially numb face. There was hardly any pain or any considerable discomfort. No taste in my mouth. I was very surprised... Couple of hours later things started to change for the worse. Pain in my throat, discomfort in almost every way..... AGONY... Same day early evening I have been sent home with just pain killers. As long as I took those pain killers I was feeling only just acceptable. I wasn't able to sleep because I just wanted to see some improvements and excited. I kept playing games on my phone in my bed to keep my mind out of what has happened. The best position was either sitting up or face down laying. Otherwise I could breath in but couln't breath out through my nose (walves would close if I try to breath out while laying back or on my side specially on my right side). I was tired sitting up and decided to lay face down and put a pillow under my chest to support me whilst playin a game on my phone. Here comes 4am, I felt something sweet quickly filling my mouth. I didn't know what it was but had an idea -bleeding-. Hardly made to the sink and spit mouth full of fresh blood then again and again and again. My blood was draning out through my mouth so quick. I called an ambulance and ended up in A&E, bleeding stopped and started after 30 mins or so again. Lost more blood but doctors couldn't find the vessel to stop it bleeding before it stopped again. I have been asked to wait in there. Half an hour later bleeding started again but this time was worse than the first two times. Doctors, nurses were running around me. They were trying to find the source while it was bleeding but my bleeding was overwhelming the suction. They were not able to pin point where it was bleeding. They tried hydrogen-peroxide gargle, it didn't work. They tried adrenalin tampon, it didn't work. Tried cauterising blindly, it didn't work. I lost nearly 300-400ml blood there on top of the amount I have lost 1st and 2nd time. Panic was growing between the staff. They cut off my clothes put me on two drips on both sides and took me in for an emergency surgery. I came out of the second surgery worse than the first one due to not tailor made anesthesia for my body. There was no bleeding anymore but the cost of it was to burn (cauterise) everywhere back of my throat because they couldn't finger point which vessel was bleeding. Far too much damage... Burns are not symetrical, uvula has been burned in couple of places, on the right side one of the connections from side of my throat to top of my throat is shaved off by most probably not steady cauterisation!!!

Last 9 days I tried to eat but everything tastes sickeningly sweet. Cannot taste anything. Swallowing anything even water is difficult. Cannot breath out through my nose unless Im standing/sitting up. Speaking hurts my throat. If I sleep, I sweat buckets and woke up soaking. I have to chance everything on me. My pillows are soaking in sweat and SALIVA. I have to lay on my side to be able to breath otherwise I jump suffocating out of bed. I can feel the second pain killers are wearing off. I want to wake up from this nightmare but its not a nightmare and there is no waking up from it... I am afraid I have to live with what I am left with. As times passes my hopes are about getting better is running low.

Result of the tonsillectomy relies on your throat, uvula, jaw anatomies and the capability of your surgeon (this is very very very important, if you get done by an L plate surgeon, you are doomed!!!!!!!!), and your luck but if the first two are complies then you don't need to be too lucky anyway.

I condemn those who think they can be surgeons despite of not being able to handle a screwdriver or a pair of pliers properly and to those who are giving them the licence to operate on us despite of their lack of interest and surgical capabilities.

This day and age they should be able to pin point where the vessels and veins are. They should be able to improve instruments to prevent damage to lips and teeth. They should be able to use the cauteriser better and don't damage uvula or anything else in the mouth and back of your throat. For God's sake JUST cauterise the tonsil beds. Is it too much to ask????

Hi Nina, yeah I'm several years down the road now ... everything is back to "normal" ... and the post operative problems I had are a distant memory. Didn't have to resort to the speech therapist, as things got better all on their own - once the obvious and not so obvious swelling went down .... I'm guessing that since it was over 8 months since your post that things have improved - least I hope that they have :-)

I'm 19 years old. I had my tonsillectomy on Friday the 13th of February this year and still to this day I'm still having problems with my throat. My speech sounds nasally, my breathing is harder than it was prior to the surgery and I'm always getting a bad taste in my throat at night. It's suggested that there might be a "hole" in my throat, also I'm having problems with my ears as well due to this.
