I am 44 years old and had my tonsils out 10 days ago. I woke up from surgery expecting horrible pain and it was not much more than a bad sore throat. I thought "hey, this won't be as bad as I thought". Boy, was I ever wrong. The first couple of days there was soreness in the throat, then the excruiating pain in the ears and jaw set in. It felt like ice picks in my ears. Then the pain in my throat got much, much worse. I would wake up and hurt so bad, but taking pain killers seemed almost out of the question because of the pain. About day 5, I woke up with the feeling of suffocation. I called the doc and he gave me Prednisone. It did seem to help. My pain in my ears and jaw was so bad, I couldn't move my mouth to talk. I had to go back to the doc after a week when I woke up and there were big black blood clots on one side of the throat. He had to go back in. Quite painful experience. He said I could eat anything, but everything I put in my mouth feels like trying to swallow a handful of nails. Tongue is extremely swollen and raw. Doc has released me to go back to work after 2 weeks off. I don't think that is going to happen. I'm just eagerly awaiting that turning point in recovery where I don't think about ripping my throat out. Other than that, all is well.

I'm a 32 year old female who is 20 days post op and all i can say is what a nightmare! on day 8 i ended up back in hospital cos i was bleeding and coughing up huge blood clots, i ended up with a drip as i couldn't eat or drink and was on morphine drip to numb the pain. After 5 days in hospital i was finally allowed home but have since developed oral thrush due to all the antibiotics the hospital had me on. i've lost 12 lbs and still can't eat due to the pain from my throat and the oral thrush! i'm feeling pretty down and praying there is light at the end of the tunnel!

Hi guys.I'm 8 weeks post tosillectomy and yes there is light at the end of the tunnel.I've had two bleeds-clots on the tonsil bed-and required surgery for both. The pain was excruciating until week 3 then i had some relief and it got better everyday.I also had nasal regurgitation :$ (fluids coming back up and out through my nose) not very nice!My speech has also been affected-only yesterday it started improving-until this I sounded really nasally. My consultant and speech therapist told me my palate wasn't moving-it's called velopharyngeal incompetence and it's a pain in the neck >:( .Anyhow, things finally seem to be improving(8 weeks later)thank God.I've been off work for the past 8 weeks(compared with the 3 weeks I had booked off originally)but I'm teaching ,so I'm lucky in that I'm off for the Summer now.I've lost 9 lbs as a result of all this through not eating and stress.Oh, and also got a "furry tongue" from the intravenous antibiotics for the infection I got in the second week.It has been some adventure but I'm glad it's nearly over :-D I don't know if I'd say it was all worthwhile but I do know if I had my time over and had read all these stories I would not have gone ahead with the operation. But then hindsight!!!Good luck everyone and remember to accept all help offered while you are recuperating.

I'm now on 5 wks post op and i haven't been back to work yet either.
I've started writing down how i'm feeling to hopefully show myself that i'm improving. My throat is agony and my right ear hurts constantly, surely this cant be normal after 5 weeks? :-(

im 35 and i just had my tonsils out yesterday. i am sick of jello, juice and popsicles and was hoping to find somthing that worked for everyone but now i am afraid of the recovery. I have been on antibiotics for a month and i take my pain medication like clockwork per my MD. I have had mild pain until i cough then the pain is severe. I also found out not to watch anything emotional since crying makes the throat pain unbearable. I hope to recover sooner rather than later but the MD told me it would be at least 3 weeks.
I also cant sleep, have liquid up the nose and swollen throat (ice packs are very helpful with that)

I am just hungry and sick of jello. :'(

Hello everyone-
I'm a 22 yo on Day 4 of my post adult tonsillectomy and I have to agree with you all... it sucks. The doc told me it was a little worse for adults but I had no idea to what extent. Only that the recovery time may be longer. The back of my tongue and uvula are still swollen from intubation although sometime last night I realized it started to feel a little more like I was actually swallowing. It still hurts. From what I can see it looks like the doc had to cut pretty deep into the left side of my throat. Anyone else have this? My spit is really thick too and my sinuses are draining... I have to spit it all up though cause it's so thick it just feels like it coats the back of my throat. My body's ready for some real food too but my throat just won't have it. Doc gave me liquid lortab (hyrdocodone) and clydimyacin (which smells so much like a baby diaper pale and it just coats your throat/nasal passages) but the hydrocodone only lasts up to 4 hrs... the last couple days I'm lucky to get 2 out of it. Anybody else having some of these problems? I'm glad there's a light at the end of the tunnel but it looks like it's a long road still. Hope everyone's getting better.
Hope

do yourself a favor and ditch the ice cream and sherbet...creates to much mucus/salavation makes you have to swallow more often and harder. Ice water is the best and gatorade if you can tolerate it. It doesn't have to be reallllllly cold either...the reallly cold may be irritating you even more. Ice pops are great but make sure they are not real sweet you will salivate to much. Ice pack acroos your jawline/up toward ears works wonders for ear pain. Try taking tylenol alternating with your pain meds each time adn try to kep up on the time when you need to take it again so it doesn't completely leave your system. sip sip sip and sip water all day even if it's just room temp that fine...do not let yourself dehydrate. Eat jello till the cows come home and don't take meds with without eating something even jello or ice pop first you will be sick. Gagling can disturb the scabs and cause bleeding so be careful

I'm 25, 11 days out of the surgery--just the tonsils after 2 years of being seriously sick every other month. I just was able to talk for the first time today...not very well, I sound like an elephant--talking out of a very long tunnel of nose. It still kills to cough, but I did eat a super-soft tomato, mayo, bread sandwhich today, and a pancake. Ooooo real food. I'm 10lbs down since 11 days ago and sitting at 124 and 5'7 really don't have that much more to lose. Someone please give me hope that I can eat a super spicy burritto very soon. I've been watching the Food Network all week and it's killing me!
I too still sleep verticle, but noticed last night after forgetting to take a Tylenol PM that I actually slept all the way thru the night except maybe a few brief wakenings. I cut back on the Tylenol today and went on a non-strenuous bike ride. I think it helps to move about, albeit slowly, as you get better. A friend said her throat felt sore for about three months after the surgery. I'm hoping this is a dirty lie! Heal up all you tonsil free adults!

I'm almost 23 and I had my tonsills out 3 1/2 days ago. I got sick (throwing up) after surgery from the anesthesia and slept most of the first day. I thought I was getting off easy because day 2 and 3 were pretty easy! However, today has begun my pain. I actually cried. I hate being on pain meds but I have been taking my hydrocodone faithfully. I was able to eat mussy foods fine yesterday, but today I have had a hard time with Jello. I guess I didn't understand the nature of this recovery. I could deal with it all if it wern't for the nausea. I'm having to take a rectal suppository for that and that is so uncomfortable, but it's better than the alternative. pray for me!!! This is terrible!!!

i am 24 and 12 days post tonsillectomy, adenoids and sinus surg. i was in the hospital once on day 7 for dehydration. i am down 20 lbs. i was given liquid lortab which tastes like hell, and was faithfully using it until the past 2 days or so. i feel a little better everyday. i ate a waffle yesterday which tasted great. i found popscicles burned my throat and ice cream made too much mucus that i couldnt swallow. i have had 10 surgeries including 3 abdominal ones and i would gladly have those again before this. this was excruciating and depressing. at one point i just wanted to give up. but i assure all of u it will get easier. my dr said i would have one REALLY bad day and it was up hill from there and he was right. i do have residual soreness and i have to be careful with spicy/acidic foods but its an improvement. my voice still sounds chinese ish but its on its way back too. my number one tip is ice packs. i used them tons and it felt soo good. rest and relax i survived and u will too. god bless...shannon

I too have just had my tonils out. The first day seemed like a breeze. Must have been really good drugs at the doctor's office. This is day # 5 and It really sucks! I'm sick of taking medicine and eating popsicles, icecream - sweet things in general. I'm not a sweet tooth so this is pretty hard. My throat is white and so is my uvula. Not really sure what's going on there. I know that it was suppose to scab over but it seems to be happening everywhere. I'm wondering if the doctor burnt different spots in my mouth and there just healing. Anyways, my throat looks gross and feels gross. I've also had a hard time with going to the bathroom from taking the hydrocodone. It has made me severly consitpated. Not really sure how that's happening either since I'm really not eating anything. I hope I start feeling better soon I have to go back to work on Monday and If I feel like this I'm thinking I won't be going back that soon. Ugh!

Surgery - June 20th - I had no idea the pain would be this intense - it is almost unbearable - I'm on Percocet but it doesn't really help the pain - the biggest thing I'm struggling with now is when I've been lying down and I get up it feels like liquid is draining out of my ears down my throat and it is so painful I can only stand still and my eyes tear up from the pain - then I run around to find my pills and about a half an hour later I'm back to the normal unbearable pain - this also happens in the morning when I rise out of bed - has anyone else experienced this ? - BRUTAL !!! - Foods that work (a little bit) - scrambled eggs, cream of wheat, pancake shredded with a fork and mixed with milk, instant mash potatoes, spaghetti chopped up fine with butter and parma cheese - I find the cold stuff hurts but I've been eating popsicles/freezies - I tried a couple of times to make smoothies but something in them keeps stinging my throat (acid in the fruit?) - all the stuff that is soft is sweet and I've got the WORST taste in my mouth...I honestly feel for everyone...

Well, I had the UPPP/tonsillectomy via coblation done on June 17th. Pain was managed and I weaned off oxycodone after 48 hours. Was on tylenol. Stitches in back of throat would occasionally gag me. My doctor did give me Zofran which helped. Drank Gatorade, protein drink, smoothies. Nothing too milky. Pain much worse on Day 6-7 due to scabs coming off. Felt like needles poking the back of throat. Restarted oxycodone, and now just take it at night when it is worse. Cant talk for prolonged periods without pain or gagging. The ice does help on the outside by the ear, cheek and throat to kill inside the throat pain. On Day 10. Still sound like I am hearing impaired. Cant talk too much. On a good day I may have chicken salad or pieces of hamburger.
