My 5 year old daughter had her op 7 days (on her 5th birthday) ago. She was really brave and ok was pain free for first 4 days then the pain hit! All I say is keep the painkillers reguarlar as I (and her) sure as hell know when she hasnt. If she is dosed up on painkillers she is fine and is eating and drinking normally.

Hey guys,

Thanks for all the input. I got my tonsils out a few days ago. I dont really know how long ago, the days are blurring together. Probably 4 days. my worst day was yesterday. I had the worst headache I have ever had in my entire life. It felt like someone was squeezing my head until it was about to explode. I tried to make my mom understand but she could only keep giving me the pain medicine. I kept telling her it was a migraine because there is no way it was a normal head ache. Usually my head aches are fast and come and go but this one was extrememly sharp and ongoing, it did not stop. Anyway, after a while she tells me it might be becaue of the medicine and you might have to try to stop taking it. I was pissed but I did what she said and stopped and today I woke up with no head ache just an overall grosse feeling with the throat pain c**p. Honestly, out of all the pain, that freaking headache was the worst feeling I have gone through. If it means going through with the throat pain instead of dealing with that amount of pain in my head again I am not taking any more pain medicine. I have had tonsilitus so the throat pain doesnt bother me. Right now I'm trying to get over this overall feeling of disgust. Im weak, my breath is disgusting, I cant move my head too much or I am nauseated, im hungry but i dont want to eat anything, I cant look at bright things or my head hurts, I think I have freaking oral thrush but nobody knows what to do because this is normal, Im really just sick of it all. Honestly, the least of your problems after this procedure is going to be throat pain, at least for me it is.

After reading how fast people got better it kinda makes me worry about myself. I got my tonsils out over a month ago now. When I got them out I woke up got extremely sick from the medicine they used on me during surgery threw up and that was the only bad thing. The next two weeks after that consisted of me waking up every 4 hours to get drugged up and then put back to sleep. I couldn't eat for the first few days I ate minimal jello. Salty foods or anything warm burned my throat causing me severe pain. After that 2 weeks I could start eating normally again but still cannot handle spicy foods. When the doctor removed my tonsils he had to remove a lot of my throat along with it due to the size. The stitches have dissolved and my throat still hurts yuck! But hopefully soon my throat will be completely healed

Thank you SO much for your post. I'm 23 and on Day 4 of my recovery. When you wrote that you silently cried in your kitchen it really struck a cord with me. I've been doing the same thing. And when you said that you're not going to die, that was so comforting because that's what it feels like. I don't have a mother so your words were comforting and supportive, just like how I'd imagine a mothers would be. Thank you.

Hi guys, I had my tonsillectomy and adenectomy 08/29/13, so far I am on Day 8 of recovery, eating is a LITTLE easier, I still have massive pain if I eat too quickly, or too much, I'm having a hard time swallowing because I don't know if anyone else has this problem.. but it goes into my nose, (weird, right?) I had a lot of complications after my surgery one of them being I could not stay hydrated and continuously would vomit by day four I was rushed into the ER because i was dry heaving and sobbing like a child. This surgery varies on pain scales for different people, I've been using my percocet rarely recently, ALTHOUGH in the morning I take about 5mL just to subdue the pain of a dry throat.. I use a humidifier but it doesn`t work as well as I'd like for it to.. I don't sleep with the air on which sort of helps, but for the most part your throat will dry out. Luke warm, room temperature liquids are best for me, they don't hurt as much.. I also like to let the liquid slide down the back of my tongue before I swallow last minute.. I'm ready to be back to my old self so I can eat !!

I am 47 i had my tonsils, adnodes and uvala removed. This was due to have strep for three months straight and being on antibiotics doctor said i was a carrier.  I am on day three am in pain beyond pain unable to swallow or eat.  Even any attempt to swallow crushed pain meds is very difficult.

Day 1 was not bad very tired so slept alot could not talk.

Day 2 was when the pain first hit me.  I could not feel my tongue it is numb and swollen have been trying to drink cannot.  Tried crushed ice no go.  So i finally gave up and have just been dealing with the pain.

Day 3 omg the pain in my ears is unbelievable and is made worse when i swallow.  So was finally able to get one pain pill down had to crush it and mix it with one tablespoon of pudding. Why only one because that was all i could swallow with the pain i am in.  Am gonna try jello see how i do on that.  Still very hard to drink water so i take small sips as often as i can.  My face and throat are so distorted from the swelling i look like a monster.

Alot of the post have been helpful am gonna try the heating pad.  Well i hope this will be all worth it.

I know this is from over a year ago but let me say this- I wish I could have had mine out when I was a kid. The drs were against tonsillectomies when I was a child and so I had chronic ear aches and tonsillitis for over 15 years. Im 27 now and just had the surgery. As a mom, I understand wanting to spare your kid pain and complications but as a long term sufferer, its a lot better for quality of life to have bad tonsils taken out earlier. Your kiddo wont feel sick as often, they will have more energy AND they wont have to try to do the surgery as an adult. This surgery is way easier and has fewer risks when the patient is younger.

I had my tonsils out 6 days ago and I have never felt pain like this in my life!!!! Day 5 was the worst, the painkillers made me very very ill, I couldn't walk by myself or string together a sentence I was that dazed out. And as for the pain, thats another story. The pain in he morning is worse because my jaw is stiff so I start off the day with ice cubes then dry shreddies, it kills but it really gets your jaw moving. Im on day 6 now and I had a bad relapse with the pain tonight, after eating ice cream would you believe! Laughing is impossible due to the pain too. The taste in my mouth is foul, im spitting up phlem every 5 minutes. I had tonsillitis 14 times in a year but at this moment I think id rather have that than this hellish ordeal!

I am 18 and I received my tonsillectomy on Wednesday Feb. 26-14. You guys must be doing something wrong because I am on day 8 and I just started having trouble only yesterday. Popsicles and the meds work freaking wonders. I thought I would be head over heals in pain and back in the hospital. I was able to finish my work also even with the anesthesia. The only problem I had was sleeping because it was hell of a lot of mucus and I was choking on it and it kept waking me. On the bottle of meds it says to take the medicine 30 mins. before you eat omg it helps soooooooo much. Please try to not clear your throat if the scabs come in it will hurt and become soar if those scabs are gone. Drink alot of water so you won't cough I know it hurts but you have to.

The older you are the more pain you will be in.

my mom did this for me when I was 13. Now I'm 17 and am on my forth day. I wish my mom had just got me to do it when I was younger. The older you get the worse it is. You are looking at the worst scenarios. Yes it hurts, it is a pain but in the long run if your tonsils aren't healthy they'll be worse in the end in your throat than out.

Hi I'm 29 and on Day 6 after surgery, if you have trouble with your tonsils on a regular basis you would be crazy not to get them out. So far the pain hasn't been much worse than a bad case of infected tonsils and with any luck it will be the last time I feel like this. I started having trouble about 9 years ago after having mono and I wish I could have figured out what was wrong back then because things just kept getting worse until I was sick and tired 80 percent of the time. I wouldn't let horror stories deter you from doing it, if you need them out you need them out. It won't get easier the more you wait.

Hello I had a tonsillectomy 4 days ago, when I left hospital I was under the very wrong impression to eat soft liquid food within 12 hours I had an nasty bleed and vomited anything and everything. I ended going back into hospital for the bleed and was told solid food is a must especially toast first tackle the pain and then to attack the food you have to be cruel to be kind was the exact phrase. I had the bleed because of the ice cream I ate.
